Rossi .44 Special
I just put this gun on lay-a-way and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about them.
Rossi 720 .44 Special. 3" 5 shot, stainless revolver.
It looks to be in nice shape. I hear they are somewhat sought after and it looks like it will be a lot of fun to shoot.
Is it true that Smith does not make a comparable K frame sized .44 Special revolver?
Now to find some .44 Special brass since I recently traded all of mine off.
Thanks

If I were going to buy a revolver not made by S&W or Ruger, I would consider a Rossi. The 44 special is a big bad round and will serve you well. I feel like the 44 special is under rated buy todays shooters but many old timers I know carry 44 specials becuase they know how well it works.....and they reload.

Looks good, I think you will enjoy it we sold a lot at Shooters when I worked there. They were a bit lower priced than the S&W's lots of guys liked them.

The Rossi 720 is the most underrated gun out there, but I guess it has a following, since the prices on them used is far above what they should be.
I had a bobbed-hammer one, and had a friend talk me out of it- I kick myself...but I got something good in trade so...
The nice thing about the 720 compared to the 696 is the size and better yet the price- I know many on here love the 696, and I would too, but I wouldn't pay what they are going for now.
Maybe one of the new Taurus 445's (.44 special ultralight) might not be a bad choice, if the price is right.

I'd rather have a Rossi than a Taurus. I handled a Rossi at a gunshop recently and thought the trigger and action were great.
The unflutted cylinder and sight profile on the gun pictured make for a good looking revolver.

I just missed out on thr fixed sight bobbed hammer version for $375. If I hadn't just loaded a card with a three inch Model 10 then I would have bought it.

Yeah I've got about 50 or so boxes of factory 44 spl ammo left over. But it does shoot in my Puma lever gun tho.

I'd by one without hesitation. I have a Rossi .22, about the size of a kit gun, and it has been a great little firearm. The .44 Spcl is a nice round, too.

I bought one a few years ago after reading good reviews from other owners. Mine has the concealed (bobbed) hammer, fixed sights and DAO trigger. In other words, it's in "belly gun" mode. It will fit in a K frame holster, but trying to find aftermarket grips is a real challenge. Pachmayr makes a set of rubber combat grips that help, but I haven't been able to find anything else that will fit. Mine has an excellent double action trigger pull. The 720 uses a coil mainspring like a J-frame, and the rest of the mechanism will be very familiar to anyone familiar with the internals of a S&W revolver.
Best of luck,
Dave

I have proclaimed the virtues of these fine little guns for years. I have two of them. One fluted and one unfluted.

I've had two Rossi revolvers.
Copies of S&W stainless Chief's Special.
Both were junk...the only good thing about them was that they turned me into an S&W owner.
Maybe they're better now....I don't care to find out.

I had one of those Rossi 720s for about 10 years. Truck carry most of the time, shot a little, it was a fine revolver for what it cost at the time. A buddy talked me out of it...one of those "now why did I do THAT" moments.
Gave a sense of comfort on some long lonely travels down dark scary trails.
Great caliber, accurate enough in a robust package for a good price at the time, nearly 20 years ago.

I got her to the range today and was able to kill two birds with one stone. Test the gun and my cast bullet hand loads.
Lyman 429421 cast from air cooled wheel weights. 256 grains, 6.1 grains of Unique with WLP primer.
They are a little snappy so I wasn't up for a whole box full. I feel confident carrying this gun with my handloads.
Shot from 50 feet.

I've had two of these over the years, let both of them slip away. I always keep an eye open for another one, and actually saw one at the Dallas gun show Sunday. But they wanted $500 for it. I passed.

I had one of the "Covert" models with a bobbed hammer a good many years ago. It was fairly heavy in the recoil department but was well made and accurate enough for me. I could kick myself for trading it away many years ago! I wouldn't mind having another one.

Excellent! That was when they were made in Brazil before Taurus got a hold of them. If you compare the build of yours to a current model Rossi or Taurus (I know they do not have the 44) you can see the difference in quality. Like a dummy I passed over 2 of their 6 shot 357 Mags.
The originals where very well made. Good buy on the 44, I would grab one of those also.

I own a Rossi Model 720 in the "covert" mode. I think it is actually better quality than a Charter Arms. I've never owned a Charter Arms, but have had friends that did. I know that quality control has been spotty, and I guess it has been best summed up as "carried much, shot little".
Best of luck,
Dave

reviving an old thread here..........
i had the bobbed hammer DAO version about 10 years ago. it was as well made as the S&W i have.
whats good about them is even though you can not get any support from Rossi or Taurus for them, any competent gunsmith familiar with S&W wheelys can replace many of the parts with minimal fitting if any.

720 Rossi
Excellent well made stainless steel revolver except for ONE thing: sights are made of PLASTIC and they can and do break...they are very hard to come by.....just my 2 cents worth....otherwise a very nice 44 Special...aka a "poor man's" 696...

I have two 720s, one bought at a gun show in April 2010 and the other at a gun show in July 2011. Coincidentally, got each one for exactly $260. How could I pass that up?

Bigger and heavier, probably more rugged because of that. I had a 720 years ago, nice gun, but the old blued taper barrel Bulldogs were nice guns, too, good quality, well put together. One of each would make a nice inexpensive pair, one for concealed carry, one for field and range work.

Rossi still has kind of a bad reputation because their very early guns were kind of junky. But they did get better.
The 720 is a decent little revolver. Got mine used several years ago for $180. I was a little sceptical of it, but figured at that price I could probably get my money back out of it if I didn`t like it.
It surprised me. It`s a pretty good little gun. A lot of the time it stays in my truck. Sometimes goes out in the brush with me.
It`s no S&W, but the quality is about what you get with a Taurus.

On the (fixed sight) "Covert" model, the front sight is made of stainless steel. It appears to be one piece, much like the front sight on the older S&W revolvers.

Thanks, Mike1957. I have a set of Hogue grips like yours for S&W J frames. There is a rod projecting through the bottom of the grip frame that prevents the Hogue grip from fitting the piece. As far as I know, Pachmayr is the only non-factory replacement grip offered for the Model 720.

Hey Dave...I did not realize they made a "covert" model with fixed sights. The only ones I have had were the adjustable sight models and in both cases the sight blades (both front and rear) were made of plastic.

i had the "covert" model years ago and would prefer it over the standard i just bought, but the standard was all i could find at the time.

sorry for reviving this thread, again. does anyone know a substitute timing hand for the Rossi 720? I called Rossi USA and they have absolutely no information on the older guns, at least none on this one. I ordered a Taurus 445 hand because Rossi/Taurus are one company now.... well the hands are different. before I try a hand from a 696... does anyone have a picture of one?

The only Rossi I've ever owned was a a Model 87 clone of the Model 60. Fit and finish weren't to Smith standards but weren't at all bad, Trigger was smooth, especially after I had a smith polish the innards a little (also had him bob the hammer). Pretty damn nice little gun for what I paid around seventeen years ago--just under $200 new. Had no complaints at all but when I could afford to I bought a 640. I can't speak to Rossi QC now, but mine was good value for the buck.

You could try Bob's Gun Shop. I've purchased parts for my old Rossi/Interarms revolver from him in the past. He's an older guy and gunsmiths as a hobby from what I understand, so patience is key, but he most likely has what you need.

I recently got this Rossi .22 like it a lot, not as much as my model 17 but
less expensive. 8 rd 6" barrel adjustable rear sight, fiber optic front shoots straight , nice trigger action , single and double. Thinking about the 357 stainless model next.
