I met the man who seems to run Boker today at a trade show here some years ago. (The SHOT show.) He was not easy to talk to, and I'll say no more about him.

But the knives seem well made, and are widely sold here.

What are Dutch knife laws like, Theur? I've seen posts on the Net by one Dutchman who carries a Fallkniven F-1 on backpacking trips. It has a blade just a bit under four inches. (10cm)

A folding knife has unfolded 28 centimeters long. Longer than that it is forbidden.

The new law says any Butterflyknife, Stilleto or spring or fall knife of any lenght is forbidden.

The Dutch gunlaw is complex anyway. I do carry a Benchmade foldingkife.
That is no problem exept when you are in a restricted area in a city. Than you have a problem when you meet the police.

Theur,

It's that forbidden to own, or forbidden to carry?

I would hope they would just forbid the carrying of such knives- as is the case in a few states here, but in most of them, they are perfectly legal to own, buy, sell and trade.

I've got a few butterfly knives, stilettos and large folding knives, and many regular pocket knives.

Thuer,

Thank you for you educating us on your situation. When a government even restricts the knives you can use, it makes me appreciate the liberty we have here.

When will governments realize the issue is violent behavior, not the tools?

I saw a Chinese made Boker at BassPro. You can tell it from 10ft away and priced accordingly, around 20 bucks. I have a German Boker with a Japanese ceramic blade and it is first rate.

I have a Benchmade 710 that measures a little short of 23cm, open. So, that would be legal, or most ordinary pocketknives, like Swiss Army knives?

Is your Benchmade considered a "gravity knife "(fall knife?)
It opens by thumb pressure on a stud on the blade, but can be swung open once the blade is partially opened. Some cops here claim that makes it a gravity knife.

Does "restricted area" mean like a courthouse or government office?

I'm guessing that Boker was at one time an American company as they made a M3 fighting knife that was issued with M1 carbines before they were fitted with bayonet lugs and bayonets. It doesn't have the barrel ring a bayonet does. I heard they were used mainly in the South Pacific and they were often worn strapped to the lowere leg. The last one I saw went for several hundred dollars on one of the auction sites. I've got a re-pop of one around here somewhere and couldn't find it when I saw this thread. Something else I've hidden from myself. It's probably made in China or Pakistan, I don't remember, but I do remember I paid $50.00 for it at one of the Florida shows. I did find a stainless steel Boker that opens with a push of a button. It appears to be made as well or better than my Benchmade/mark? (I can't find it either) and is marked "Boker Solingen Stainless" and has a little tree near the markings that makes me think they might have merged with Tree Brand at some point in time.

I wsas visiting a friend in France; when he saw my little Swiss Army knife, he told me not to carry it. Apparently France has a law about pocket knives too.

I ahve one of those M3 fighting knives that is in pretty ratty condition. Does anyone know who restores knives like this?

The M-3 was originally for soldiers not issued a bayonet and paratroopers. You can see photos of them strapped to paratropers' boots in Europe. Many were given to France as aid in the 1950's and they aren't common here now.

The M-4 carbine bayonet is the same, but with a means to fix it to the carbine.

Hey Charlie, I think the switchblade is called a Boker Top Lock. They come in two different sizes, but both are very good quality. You can also find the same knives without the auto-opening feature. Pushing the button just unlocks it so it can open.

They also make a very nice line of kitchen knives. I've got one that is damascus steel and its both sharp and a beauty. Its my weapon of choice when I need a knife for a snack. I keep it in its original box with a plastic sheath that it also came with. My wife doesn't touch it, its too sharp!

I like Boker knives and own several. Sounds like the principal is a prick weed. Kinda disappointed to learn that.

Texas star. Your Benchmade 710 is legal in Holland. The gravety knife after teh 1th of januari not even al sorts and lenghts of Butterflyknifes, Stilleto's and buttonknifes. Even iff they are not more than a centimeter big. That is to make it more easy for the cops so they can see iff a knife is banned. (not a joke). Charly Sherril I do have a Tree brand knife to.
It is a litle folder with stag handle. It is the top end of Boker.
I do like Boker. The make nice knifes in atractive models and give good quality.

Dankie, Theur. (You have just seen about 30% of my knowledge of Dutch. Actually, most of it is Afrikaans, based on Dutch. )

I guess a button knife is what we in the US call a switchblade, and other English speakers call a flick knife?
Push a button and the blade flips out under spring pressure? These are sometimes called stillettos here, too, although a stiletto is really another term for a slender dagger, and it may not even fold in some cases. We also call butterfly knives that name, or Balisong, which I think is a Filipino word.

So, all of those will be banned as of next year, but knives that open by pivoting the blade open by a thumb stud, like the Benchmade Model 710 or the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn folders are still legal?

I'm glad to know that those will still be legal there.
