My tactical shotgun...
... is not exactly taci-cool.
This is my by-the-bed shotgun. An Intrac Arms ( until today I thought it was a Stoeger shotgun! ) double trigger & hammer 12ga.
20 inch open cylinder barrel, weighs 8 lbs and handles like a old car axle.
I've added that cool shell holder, the squishy slip-on butt pad and the $4 nylon shoulder strap.
Now as soon as I tape a Mag-light to the underside of the barrels I'll have the "tactical shotgun" set up like you see on the magazine covers!
(No... I'm not gonna' tape a light to it. )

It has the added advantage of being a club in CQB situations. Lots of steel there - none of that plastic, lightweight stuff.

My buddy leveled a SXS on three thugs carrying a tire iron and chunk of chain when we were 16 and stupid. Stopped them in their tracks and took the fight out of them too.
My first shotgun I bought for myself was a SXS as well after that.

Every debate I hear on self defense shotguns always devolves into a "SxS shotguns aren't practical because they only hold two shots and are slow to reload." As far as I'm concerned, if you make those two shots count, there shouldn't be much need for many more. If a pair of 12 gauge rounds in close quarters isn't enough, then you're in the wrong fight with the wrong tool.

Got one outfitted like that in my bedroom closet too, but mine is the hammerless variety. Just picked up a box of 9-pellet 0000 buck for the shell holder on the butt.

Ok, I will admit to being bored last winter. I had way too much time on my hands, and an old Stevens SxS that had been cut to 18.5". So, two rails, high viz front sight, some matte black paint, and well a tacticool SxS shotgun. Geez, I have to get a life. BTW, it shoots great.

I have a Stoeger Coach gun - SxS 12 guage... When you are awoken from a deep sleep by an intruded the simpler the better when it comes to operation!
I have a Winchester slug in the first barrel and 00 Buck in the other.
Sometimes one 12 guage slug can do the job of two shells!

I have an old Baikal coach gun in 20 gauge that I'm confident would win any fight brought to my house. Doubles are FAR more useful in a fight than most folks think. Mine it 6.2 pounds and points like a magic wand.

I am pretty sure that my replacement shotgun will be another Hans Vang modded Mossberg 590 with a Surefire forend and a sling mount that allows for my VTAC sling, etc. That said, I have been tempted by a SxS. One problem is that I like the ghost ring sights on the Mossberg, and an Aimpoint T1 seems like a good addition for certain scenarios in case my AR is not there; adding those to a SxS seems overdone, at least maybe the Aimpoint.
Big question: why are the doggone barrels so long? I HATE having a barrel over 18", and I have not found a SxS that isn't 20".

This is my Tac-Shotgun. Mossberg 500/590. I like the look of the SxS but don't like the limited ammo. I really dig the Maverick Tactical O/U though haha

Double barrels are adequate for most situations, but I prefer the pump guns with a few extra rounds. The sound of a round being jacked into a pump gun does a lot to end a confrontation without a shot even being fired.

After two rounds down the hall, I don't think any survivers will be willing to investigate the action type of your shotgun. Also your neighbors will call 911 for you too. Ivan

The fastest two shots...
many have separate actions so it will still fire one barrel even with a break in the other...
it is slower that a bolt action firing three shoots but faster than a bolt firing four...
I have a friend who has a double 10ga and he will pull both barrels at the same time, just for the hello of it...
I need some new friends!

I'd lose the sling. You aren't hauling that thing on a forced road march for miles and it can only snag at an inopportune moment and slow or throw off your mount. I love my double SKB Ithica 12 gauge but it's the Browning Lightweight Auto 5 that does house duty. CB

GF: I have a Rossi .20 sxs with hammers. I cut 2 thin (like 1/2") sections of an old bike wheel tube to mount a light below the barrels. They are slicker than snot. They don't breakdown and will last for many years and the light doesn't move.

Stoeger offers the Double Defense which covers most of the SxS bases for a self defense shotgun.

Not a SxS but follows the simpler the better line of thinking. My 12 Ga M&P (meat and potatoes). This was about 5 seconds before I dispatched a cotton mouth. Plain Jane Sears model 120 with a 18+ inch barrel and a sling.

There are currently quite a few Cowboy Action Shooters who can shoot and relaod a double-gun very, very fast. I'm sure there are some videos of it on YouTube.
I intend to buy a "serious" self-defense shot gun some day and hope it to be a Remington 870 or Mossberg. In 20 inch or less barrel with a full mag tube and little else.

I agree with Charlie. My dad taught me at a young age that there's no mistaking the sound of a pump action shotgun. It will send most would be criminals out the nearest window with no shots fired.

Nowadays the problems solvers are pepper spray and tazers. Years ago you could break up a fight in a bar by simply jacking a round in a dozen gauge. Nobody got shocked into a coma or irritated by the spray. They just got "out."(in a hurry)

I had some Nickle plated .338 cases, loaded some bullets in them without primers or powder, put a bent wire in the primer hole and hang them on the Christmas Tree (we call it a "Peace On Earth" ornament). CB

I know what you are thinking... Yes,I do need to upgrade to the 30rd drum when I get a chance.
I've used Mossberg 500s for years for their tool like simplicity. I still have two. I sold my Stoeger double because I disliked the automatic safety and didn't feel like tinkering with it.
Then I got the Saiga. Added a Krebs flash hider/muzzle brake and assorted compliance parts and then I had my friendly local armorer hand fit the mags and add a manual bolt hold open.
20 rounds in around... what... three seconds.... Might be handy to remove a wall or some such. Fairly simple to learn to use as well. Though the 8rd Surefire LLC mags (or factory 8s) are probably better and I likely ought see about getting a mag well conversion.
Still.... Even a relatively basic Saiga conversion offers an interesting comparison point.
