Default Anyone got a new Ruger SP101 in 22lr?

The 8 shot with adjustable sights? Been thinking of one of these for a while. Local shop said they have one for $530 + tax. Any thoughts?

Default I like it...

IDK about the price.

First time it took mine to the range, there was something about it that reminded me of the cap pistols I played with as a 6-7-8 year old. Got a big grin and thoroughly enjoyed banging away with it. Did not try for groups, just having fun..

It is certainly more solid than expected and I thought well finished.

Judging by the gunbroker price is not bad at all.

I have the .357 in that platform (4.2") and love it. Great balance, quick target acquisition and a blast to carry/shoot in the wood.
I will own the .22 for all of the above reasons and cheaper to shoot.

I seldom see it available locally in .22. By all accounts, the .22 SP 101 is THE kit gun to own. I paid about that same $$$. Buy it, I'm sure you'll love it!

Purchased mine at my LGS for $509.95 plus of course .0625 tax Total out the door was $541.82. August 2012

The trigger pull cannot be compared to either the S&W 63/617, they are far superior. But I am beginning to adapt to the heavier pull and getting use to it. So keep this in mind if you decide to purchase one.

I think it is a nice looking firearm and have no regrets purchasing it.

I have checked out two at LGS, both had major flaws on the outside of the barrel and receiver. The first one looked like they hired a 18 year old gave him a hack saw and told him to cut off the barrel. Both had gouges on the frame. I have owned a lot of Rugers and still own two and never saw anything like this before.

Easiest gun to do a Wolff Spring Kit "trigger job" on. Also easy to polish the trigger group "parts" while your at it.

EDIT: I take back what is said above. According to the Wolff website the spring kit will not work on the newer model 22 version of the SP101. I was speaking about other SP101's in 357/38

http://www.gunsprings.com/Revolvers/...3/mID52/dID234

I also think our Cajun Lawyer posted about his and sent it back for modifications.??

Default Well Built, Not That Accurate.

I purchased one of the first 500 SP-101 adjustable sight .22's, very close to the S/N of the test piece reviewed on GunBlast dot com.

My first range trip was less than stellar. So I checked the trigger pulls on my Lyman digital pull gauge. 7LBS S/A 11LBS D/A.

I installed a 2lb lighter Wolff mainspring and trigger return spring.
S/A trigger dropped to 4.5LBS and D/A to 10 LBS.

The revolver was a lot of fun to shoot at reactive targets, cans, clays, swingers, etc. with an easy to anticipate D/A trigger. However, I could not get groups under 3 inches at 50 feet shooting the gun of sandbags. 25 yards looked like a tight shotgun pattern. The bore leaded badly and the cylinder face picked up a good deal of lead. I polished the bore with JB Bore paste. That eliminated the leading, but group size was still disappointing for a $550 revolver.

I recently traded it in along with a couple other pieces on a Colt SAA. The LGS owner took the SP-101 to his home range to try out. He had the same opinion of the gun. Fun to shoot D/A but not a good target gun by any stretch- at least not this example.

I'll stick to Single-Sixes for my Ruger .22 revolvers from now on.

The first bunch out of Ruger's door last year had improperly cut forcing cones, which leaded badly & didn't produce the best accuracy.
That was corrected over a year ago & the cones SHOULD be fine on current guns.

I had a first batch sample that didn't lead the forcing cone, it PLATED the forcing cone.

Second sample was also improperly cut & failed a No-Go gauge.
Once corrected to proper depth & angle, no appreciable leading in several hundred rounds.

Ruger changed a production step & all should be good now.
Accuracy is better on mine than my Smith 34, DA trigger's stiff, but I don't plan to use DA much.
Bought it for the capacity & the barrel profile, not DA shooting.
Mine has larger Hogue wood on it, makes a difference in hold.

This is the exact gun I asked the Ruger CEO for about two years ago, via the Ruger website. As soon as they announced it, I knew I had to buy "my" gun, and I got the first one at my local pusher's place.

The feel is great, wonderful size, good capacity, good sights, great grips, great balance.

Now for the bad, the trigger pull is somewhere worse than atrocious. I believe the SP-101 stands for "S"orry "P"ull - 101 lbs. I'm pretty sure I'm right about that. It is coming around a little with use.

Worse, the hammer was so sharply checkered it literally took the skin off my thumb on the second cylinder full I fired. And I have pretty tough skin, being a professional cook and all. In an emergency, you could use the hammer for a ******* file. I took sandpaper to mine and it is better now.

Worse still, the machining around the ejector rod was cut with a bandsaw by a drunken, one-eyed worker the day after a bender. It is sharp enough to cut you (ask me how I know) and the tooling marks are so bad it looks like they were actually going for an "engine-turned" finish on it.

Don't know about accuracy, I just stick with my S&W 34 and the Ruger stays in the safe. The few rounds I fired before loss of blood forced me to quit for the day were not enough to sight it in. Haven't had it back out. I was going to get the matching .357. If I do, they will both go to Gemini Customs or somewhere to get cleaned up, like they should have been from the factory.

Ruger screwed the pooch on mine at least.

I've been told the newer ones are nicer. I will probably send mine back to Ruger over the winter. If it had been properly finished, it is a wonderful little pistol.

Mine had a horrible trigger pull with a discernable hitch before let off. "I'll be damned if I am going ot pay for a $65 trigger job on a brand new $500 revolver" is what I told the Ruger guy right before they gave me a shipping label. Got it back and it is as good of a trigger pull as one has a right to expect on a Ruger. Pretty little gun-if I was only to have one 22 this would be it. But thankfully I have my 63. And my 617-4. And my pre 17. And my 317-1. And my 317. And the old model single 6. Plus the two ruger semi autos. Oh and the NAA .22. I'm good on .22's

I tried to get a Ruger CSR to send me a label to get mine fixed. They wouldn't. Darn gun is gone now. Lost some $$$ on it but learned never, ever buy a brand new model of any gun again.

I'm wanting one of these but not crazy about Ruger grips, especially on the SP101, plus the aforementioned heavy trigger issue. By the time you spend money for upgrades, you could have had a Smith 617, which is a superior handgun according to most reviews I've read. Any other opinions?
