I've carried mine over some very steep country and it was rather heavy but tolatable. One thing I sure noticed. When I shoot my .300 Savage Model 99 with serated metal butt plate, it recoils less than the heavier Remington 81 in .300 Savge. I guess it's that heavy barrel springing back in forth when you fire it. but I just love the "ca-clunckity-clunk!!" of all that going on when you pull the trigger.

Wyatt,
Very nice model 8. Never had one, but always wanted one. I didn't know they could be taken down like that.

Hi, John. Good to hear from you. Yeah, all you need is a dime for a screwdriver to remove the forend screw, then you spin that skinny lever thing below the barrel where it joins the frame and it comes apart.
Hey. You sent me these pictures, didn't you?

Nice pictures and rifles.
A favorite of mine, the model 8 is a fun rifle to shoot.
The rifle in the first pic is an early one going by the small side panels in the stock right behind the receiver.
My 25 C grade and a 35cal from 1910/1911 era have that feature and the early style curved hard rubber butt plate.
Those were prone to breaking and toe damage to the stock, so they went to the so-called upside-down cresent rifle plate rather quickly. That 's seen on 'onegunshorts' M8.
You could get a couple different options aside from that too.
My later production 30cal M8 has that style.
Getting harder to find decent ones and the price is climbing on these of late.
I passed on an FN1900 recently,,the European made version. Kind of a rare gun,,they only made about 5K of them at FN,,,this one had the ribbed bbl jacket.
These guns have Euro walnut pistol grip stock and a few small features that set it aside from the Remington produced rifle. Just too much wrong with this refinished example for the asking price. Maybe he'll come to his senses! Like I need another rifle anyway.
9mm caliber (Euro version of the 35Rem.)
Thanks to everyone for the pics.
