Own a 10-22 and am happy with it. Was wondering if the S&W 15-22 is twice as good since it's twice the price. Or is this an apples/oranges comparison?
I had a chance to buy a 15-22 for 500 bucks but passed because I wasn't impressed with the plastic build and besides it's hard to get hi-cap mags for it. No problem finding them for my Ruger.
Comments appreciated. Thanks!

Apples & oranges. No real comparison.

I never did understand the faux AR type .22LR. Maybe as a trainer.

$500 for a .22 rimfire...

I agree apples & oranges. I like my 10/22 much better, but then I never did get the "black rifle" thing.

I own both as well. And, no, they are nothing alike. The 15-22 is a hoot to shoot especially w/ an aftermarket trigger group and, as it turns out, is a bunch cheaper to shoot than 5.56.

Besides, a suppressor on a wooden stock 10-22 would look funny.

I own both.

As much as I like my 10-22, my S&W 15-22 is much more enjoyable to shoot. It's a great training platform for my AR. The manual of arms is nearly identical and shooting 22LR is much more affordable.

I still enjoy the Ruger, but when I do, I find myself comparing it to the 15-22 and wanting the features it offers.

The 10-22 is a long proven firearm. The 15-22 is newer but I haven't had a problem with it. It is whatever floates your boat. There is the cool factor to the 15-22 and is a great trainer, and a lot cheaper to shoot then .223/5.56. Yes you could buy 2 10-22 for the price of one 15-22 but there is the cool factor you pay for, It's a baby ar. Some think it a waste to buy a 10-22 or any semi because they waste too much ammo, they prefer a bolt action, or lever action. To each his or her own.... And for fun factor add trigger job and slidefire stock to a 15-22 it'll put a smile on your face and lower your bank account considerably or you could buy 4 or 5 10-22's.

I own both. My 10/22 is the take down version. The cost is immaterial. I liked both rifles, so I own both rifles.

I bought extra mags for both though I had to wait a while for the BX25s.

These guns are as different as night and day. They just happen to use a common cartridge.

I like the Ruger a little better for hiking in the woods shooting squirrels and rabbits. It's a little lighter and I can put it in my backpack.

I like the M&P a little better for plinking and target shooting. It just feels more substantial than the 10/22 and it fits me a little better.

Both are very good rifles, and there are other .22s like the old Marlin lever action, and CZ bolt action that are very good in their own way.

I'm still a little raw over the fact that the little bit of shooting I've done in my 15-22 that the mag it came with actually shows some slight wear on the feed lips. And yet the beater 10/22 from 1978 with as far as I can tell original mag still shoots just fine. And the BX-25 mags with steel feed lips are supposed to be outstanding. And yet my 15-22 mag will likely be dead in another couple of summer's worth shooting. Fun rifle but mags that die that quick are kind of a heartburn special to me. They need to come up with a mag that has some kind of liner on the feed lips.

Joe....Maybe get a look at the SR22 rifle. It's an AR-type 10-22. Takes the same rotary mags and parts. I have an old 10-22 and a bunch of mags. My kid shoots an SR22, it's a keeper (especially if you like the Ruger platform and have a box full of mags).

FYI, it's priced similar to the 15-22 so bring a stack of foldin' money!!!!!

When they first came out I was thinking like the guys in the early post, what the heck a 22 AR. That's just silly. What were they thinking? At the time I was looking at getting an inexpensive 22 rifle to shoot and the 10-22 was on the top of the list. It has lots of option and upgrades.
I read post about the 15-22, watched some you tube videos and bought one about a year ago. What a hoot, just darn fun to shoot. I didn't buy it as a "trainer". I was just looking for a fun rifle to shoot and it is. Maybe a little on the expensive side in some people's eyes, $450, but fun to shoot.
Which is more accurate ? I have read post that say they are equal and I have read post that say the 10-22 is more accurate. However I haven't read a post that says the 15-22 is more accurate than the 10-22. It comes down to who is behind the trigger and after all they are 22LR. Cheap and inexpensive so you can't expect too much unless you are spending $5-$8 a box and then maybe you should be using a bolt rifle.
I don't have a 10-22 but for a good time I can recommend a 15-22.

Have both like both, 10/22 with good Nikon scope is really nice but like others have said the 15-22 really is fun to rip off several mags or take your time and nail that can.

With prices today the 15-22 is muuuuch easier on the pocket when you have the 'joneses' for a black rifle session.

I only own one 22 and its a 10/22. Cost me $109 last year. I like all the others but i cant spend $500 on a 22.

Ok Im going to have a go at this, muscle memory rules when you have problems to solve. I learned this shooting IPSC compitition, each stage of fire is different with different procedures to follow to avoid penalties. Running your handgun has to be second nature so you dont have to think about how your firearm works, this frees your mind to solve the problem in front of you. Muscle memory demands a lot of repetition to work. Now as all the controls on a 15-22 work exactly the same as a AR-15,shooting a 15-22 builds muscle memory of that system, this directly transfers to operating a AR-15. Due to the high cost of ammo I do not shoot my AR-15s as much as I would like and the 15-22 is not only huge fun to shoot it builds muscle memory to run the AR-15 as well. Now I do love my 10/22,accurate,super reliable and also huge fun to shoot but its a different tool in the toolbox.

The above. Not to mention that in one year the 15-22 has paid for itself in the cost savings of shooting .22 LR versus my 5.56 reloads. And even reloads are a valuable commodity right now with the cost/availability of components.

I built my daughter a "match" rifle up on a 10-22 but was sort of underwhelmed by it when done. I think I put enough into it to buy a 15-22when they were selling at normal retail.

Everybody's different.

Have both. Both are great, and vastly different.

Everyone should have at least one 10/22.
The M&P 15-22 is wonderful, but it's not a must-have, like a 10/22.

I bought my M&P 15-22 through a dealer program. Only $360 and it came with four 25-round mags. :)

Is the 15/22 as accurate as the 10/22? The 10/22 that I have had since 1968 is the most accurate auto loader I have ever shot. Back in the day many a tree rat have fallen victim to it.

Different Strokes...

My wife currently has a 10/22, even though its pink, its a fun, accurate little rifle. If I want to make nice holes in paper at the range, it would be the rifle i would take.

However, in my hands both rifles shoot about the same. I just enjoy my 15-22 more. Plus I get the feel of my AR without having to spend the $1 per rd most 223/5.56 is running these days. Also, it's just another evil looking gun I have that pisses off anti gun people. That alone puts a smile on my face.

I would say the 10/22 is probably more accurate in general. I didn't pay $500 for my 15-22, considerably less, but it is a fun little plinker.

I would say get which ever one feels better to you. I don't think you could go wrong with either.

Good luck with your decision.
