I scrimshawed this Pat Tomes gentleman's folder for the maker back in 1995.
Pat sold it to one of his collectors where it remained until last year.
When it came up for sale I bought it. It features Damascus steel with Mammoth ivory scales.
The engraving and gold inlay were done by David Perdue.

As a guy who likes knives and who is also a bird hunter, that hits me on more than one level.

Beautiful work from both you, Mr. Purdue and the maker!

I just picked up a really sweet little Al Mar from the A.G. Russell knife store in Rogers this past weekend...about a 1 7/8" blade, just a bit like a Spyderco Dragonfly or Maserin Turtle. Very cute and wicked sharp.

That looks a lot like a knife that Harvey McBurnette made for me years ago, but it had burgundy Micarta scales, as that was more practical for actual carry.

But I have to say, that is a beautiful knife! Thanks for posting.

Is that a lock release just behind the bolster or something in the photo background? A prop for the knife? I've never seen a release like that.

I loved my Kershaw, I think it was the executive or something like that.
But, Texas has made autos legal to carry so i bought an HK by Benchmade. This thing is great. Thanks to the republic of Texas.

I would have gone with Benchmade years ago. But these days my EDC is a Zero Tolerance 350. 99% for self defense.

P.S. They're both USA made, btw.
First off, welcome home, Al. Coverts are what the Army issued my son's unit, along with Gerber multi-tools, prior to his 2nd tour in Iraq. After handling it, bought one of my own. It's a fine piece but IMHO not really suited for everyday carry. It's big for a folder, and since it was originally designed as a fighting knife, it doesn't really lend itself to the day to day chores most of us use knives for. As a survival/SHTF knife, yes. Otherwise, there are better choices but that's me talking/typing.

I have both the Gerber full size Applegate-Fairbairn Covert and the smaller one. The full size I never carry due to it's size, but it is a cool knife.

I occasionally carry the smaller version. Even that one is fairly big.

This one was bought from the factory about 20 years ago.
It just fits in the coin pocket of my jeans, and has gone through the clothes washer more times than I can remember. I need to clean it up.

When I got this knife I thought about all the things it can be used for... Over the years, this one has served two regular uses-- getting into packages (have I ever told y'all how much I HATE that hard plastic packaging!) and have used the flat edge to adjust many scopes. Could have easily used a dime.

Buck and Case for me. Just not any of the Bucks that are made in China. I refuse to buy a Chinese made knife no matter how much I may like it. I have 6 or 7 Buck folders that are all made in America and would not part with any of them and most are worth today much more than what I paid for them 20+ years ago.

Favorite is hard. I have grown to like the larger single blade folders with the pocket clips.

I very much like Ken Onion's knives for every day carry

But it is hard to overlook Allen Elishiwitz's fine blades

Mikkel Willumsen has some really cool pieces with some interesting blades.

When it comes to a more elegant pocket flder it is hard to ignore the knives of Larry Feugen

I think there may be some model confusiion here and in another post.

The big one is the Combat Folder. It is fairly big and heavy, but I do carry mine unless I think its design and size might upset a cop who'd try to claim that it's a folding dagger, although only one edge is sharp. Mine is on my belt now.

The Covert is the medium sized one, and is quite handy in a belt pouch. It works fine for everyday needs, but I had to have the edge bevels reground and honed. The factory edge was pretty dull.

I also have the little one, I think called the Mini Covert. I do carry it or a Fallkniven of similar size when I need a small locking folder. Gerber also used to make some nice lockblade folders in their Silver Knight line, made in Seki, Japan.

I think the Gerber A-F folders are well designed and quite efficient. You may need to have the edges honed, if not sharp on delivery. I generally carry either the Combat Folder or the Covert when I'm not wearing a Benchmade Model 710. I am confident that any of these knives will work well for either stabbing or slashing. And I've opened the mail with them, trimmed loose strings on clothing, and other daily needs.

I don't have an industrial job, where I'd need to cut a lot of carpet or open boxes frequently. Something else might be better for that.

Phil-

I dunno which "flat edge" you used to adjust a scope. Both blades are flat-ground. But there are three screwdrivers on that knife, and they are for turning screws. I bought a used SAK and had to very carefully tap the tip of the main blade with a plastic mallet to straighten it because a prior owner had used it to turn screws. He must have put some effort into it to bend the blade tip. I also have seen blade tips broken on pocketknives, and not just Swiss Army knives. Throwing a knife or using it as a screwdriver are the most common ways in which knives are damaged.

BTW, if a particular SAK lacks a true Phillips - head screwdriver blade like your Tinker model has, the small screwdriver on the can opener will turn most Phillips-head screws.

You may be interested to know that the little cross on the blade tang is the Helvetian Cross from the Swiss flag. The Helvetii were the Swiss tribes through which Julius Caesar had to fight his way en route to Gaul. They later joined to form the Swiss nation.

The little thingee that some think is an umbrella is the stylistic representation of Wilhelm Tell's famous crossbow. It also appeared on Wenger blade tangs. Current SAK's no longer carry that image. I think I'll write the factory and ask why. On the other side of the blade, where yours will read "Switzerland", it now reads "Swiss Made", to ensure that consumers know the knives remain Swiss, not made in China, etc. (This is the explanation given to me by the factory. I didn't guess or get it off the Net.)

I hope this is of interest and may save someone's blade tip from being used as a screwdriver! If you DO ruin a blade, Swiss Army Brands can usually replace it.

I collect and have many, many knives. Growing up I always carried a 3 bladed knife such as a stockman. I have tried the trapper knives and jack knives and always go back to the 3 blade knife. I have quite a few lockbacks of various brands and also single blade folders by Gerber, Benchmade and others and could never get used to single blade pocket clip carry. I use them once in a while but not on a regular basis. The knife pictured is my latest pocket carry. Great Eastern, Northfield Calf Roper in primitive bone, 1095 carbon steel. Made in Titusville, Pennsylvania in the good ole USA. I like it just fine and do have a bad habit of switching around pretty regular. My knives get pretty beat up in my pockets because of all my keys. Just thought I would post this.

Never have too many knives or guns.
