What is the most over-rated handgun IYO?

Why?

What is the most under-rated handgun IYO?

Why?

For information, I just brought home and took to the range a 38 special, 4" barrel, hand eject, 5 screw. It shoots great to be around 100 years old. Has some "Pretty issues" but shoots as good as anything I have bought new "out of the box."

I think it to be one of the most underrated today? But maybe not in the past?

Accurate, low recoil, etc; and I know it has caused a love affair for its duration. And probably will continue.

Over rated-Colt Python.I have a mint 4" Python and I have Smith's that cost less with better triggers and better bluing.

If I had one, I'd sell it in a heart-beat! The silly prices people are paying for them is just amazing. I much prefer Model 27's for finish, looks, and actions (for both feel and longevity). Much better value.

Overrated? I'd say the 1911 pattern .45 ACP. They are great handguns (my favorite auto-loader), but really aren't for everybody. They take practice to utilize them effectively and attention to get them to work at their peak.

Underrated? I always liked the 1076 and haven't seen too many cheerleaders for that pistol or 10mm.

They may be overrated but are still great investments.

Overrated: GLOCK. I've owned some in the past, don't own any now, and, will not own any in the future.

Underrated: S&Ws with the internal lock. I understand the politics but the firearms are still exceptional.

Lot of Python hate! I think they're very good guns, but can see the annoyance when a worn out Python is bringing more money than a nice Pre-27. However I still think the Colt is a fine revolver; even alongside my Shooting Master, Pre-29, and 27's.

Overrated = Glock----ugly-----dangerous----plastic-----did I say ugly?
Overrated = S&W Model 28-----Nothing wrong with them, but for the prices they command, there are a bunch of other S&Ws that are much more desirable, to me anyhow.

Underrated = most any quality .38 special revolver. Not here, but most folks in the general gun-buying public think they aren't powerful enough and don't hold enough ammo.

Don't know about over rated but the S&W .40 Sigma is very underrated. It bites on both ends and mine at least has never failed. If it had a better trigger I'd rate it as good as the M&P.

My selections are based on many people thinking the "Overrated" choices are the end-all-be-all, while the "Underrated" choices are generally frowned upon as being "not enough".

Most over rated would be a Colt Diamondback or Python.

Most under rated would be Ruger Mark II in .22LR.

Most under priced would be a Ruger Speed Six or Security Six.

Most over priced is a S&W 610.

Overrated - anything Colt, and Colt service. In fact if Colt gave me a gun, I would break my own arm trying to sell it.

Underrated - My old Rossi 677 .357 mag snubbie. I loved that gun so much that my wife took it and still has it. She carried it through 2 pregnancies. Dang thing shot anything I put threw it and still feels good.

Overrated....380 caliber pistols.

Underrated....Chinese-made SKS's. I thnk you asked for hand guns, so I will add the versatile snubby 686.

I'm sure folks will have negative opinions towards me on both sides, but it can't be worse than some of the other opinion posts in this thread.

Ruger MKII under rated? Every one (almost) who owns one loves it.

My dad had a gathering of fat rich guys at his farm about 8 years ago. They all brought their 22 revolvers. There were 5 guys with 5 guns they each shot them all and compared their 5 groups with all of the others. The worst shooting was a early 80's Colt Diamond back (dad's), the best by a small margin was a pre-war K-22 target. Close in second was the insurance salesman's, H&R top break target. Over rated: Kimber 1911s - I've seen more of these choke than any other brand. Definately not worth the money.

Over rated: Any AR

Under rated: .380s and most of the so-called mouse guns. They do have their uses.

This is my opinion based of some of the things I've seen at the range. I know that lots of folks have, shoot and love their Kimbers but I hear and see a lot of them that have a lot of assorted problems some models more than others I think. Some of them you have to pay high dollar for and then spend another small fortune to get them to run right. The instructor that did my first CHL renewal qualification is a big time Kimber fan. Yet she can hardly get through a full magazine with out a stove pipe or failure to feed on any of her 3 Kimbers. Even though I KNOW they make some fine pistols I'd never spend the money for one because I just see too many that have problems. For that kind of money I need a sure thing.

I have 4 of them with about 22K rounds between them and never the slightest problem, not ever. I know they are ugly. But they are tough and reliable and accurate right out of the box. If you check some of the reports of problems with Glocks you will find that the owner has "tinkered" with it. Unless you have one that you want to turn into a race gun or set up for competing you don't need to touch it. My advice is to take it out of the box new. A small dab of oil on the side rail cuts in the slide and get busy. the trigger and the recoil spring and the ejector are fine just like Gaston designed 'em. I have no idea where all the hate comes from but I suspect that it comes mostly from folks who have little to no experience with them and believe too much of what they read on the internet. Some truly don't like the grip angle or the trigger and that's fine. there is nothing on heaven or earth that EVERYone likes. I just believe that my 10 years experience with them proves to ME that they are excellent pistols. The haters can go on and hate. I KNOW the truth. And that is MY 2 cents worth.

Overrated? I will catch heck for this, but to me this K22 was worthless. It was heavy, and shot a tiny cartridge. It did not have mind-boggling accuracy, like most folks claim. I never saw what the claim to fame was with this gun. I paid less than $25.00 for this thing, sold it and replaced it with a 65-3, a real gun in a useful caliber.



I believe the Spanish Astra and Star pistols were underrated. The Astra Constable .22 LR and A75L 9mm I owned well made, accurate and reliable.


I also feel the Ruger P series, like this P95dc and P89, are robust and combat accurate. They are also flat out ugly, uncomfortable in the hand, and nearly have to be given away when the owner wakes up and realizes what he bought.

the one gun most overrated is the gun I want.
the most underrated gun is the one I haven't found out about.

You might think it's odd, looking at my avatar, and considering I own multiple examples. But I'd say the most overrated is the Luger. Don't get me wrong, they are things of beauty and joys forever. They represent some sort of pinnacle of Victorian-era industrial design, and are a masterpiece of machining and (before WWII) finishing. They are fun to shoot, have tremendous "cool factor", and draw a crowd at the range - normally blase range personnel will crowd around and try to swallow their pride to ask for a chance to fire a mag or two.

But, having said all that, from the standpoint of their primary reason for being, they weren't all that great. They were, after all, intended as sidearms for officers, non-coms and artillery personnel, a last-ditch defensive weapon when the chips were down on the battlefield. And few weapons could have been less suitable for the God-awful, muddy hell of the WWI battlefields. There's a real good reason why they were issued with those hard clam-shell cases that totally enveloped the gun - to protect them from the dirt and mud that would soon render them inoperable. And trying to field-strip and clean one under the stress of battlefield conditions is practically impossible. If I'd been going into combat, I'd rather be armed with practically any decent, large-caliber double-action revolver, much less a 1911.

So, that's why the Luger is my pick for most overrated. Not to say I don't want more of them.

To each his own here. But, IMHO.....

Over rated: Colt 1911s & Colt Single Actions. They were state of the art in their day and still have a mystique surrounding them. However, the price that a 1st or 2nd generation SAA commands now is unbelievable and a decent Series '70 Govt. Model is off the chart too.Functionally & practically, they have been superceded.

I have carried a 1911 on duty many years ago when my agency allowed personal choice. Most places issue now or will not put a 1911 on the approved list. It also got VERY tiresome to have people approach me to let me know that my gun was cocked! I switched when we were issued the 4506 & then the Sig P220 after that. Same caliber & less drama. I retired that 1911and later sold it.

Under rated:
Ruger revolvers & Glock semi autos. Neither are particularly elegant. But, they are superior workhorses.

Over rated caliber:

9mm Parabellum

Under rated caliber:
.45 GAP- recoils like a 9mm w/ the stopping power of a .45 ACP.

I'll agree with some that's been said and I'm certainly no expert.

Overated, Kimbers for what they cost...

Underrated, 380s

My Micro Desert Eagle is my second favorite gun, and with the right ammo, personally I think it's very worthy.

Very interesting, lol. PA Troopers have carried Glocks in .45GAPs for years, but they're switching back to the .45acp.

Also hearing how the 9mm parabellum is an over-rated caliber makes me cringe, but to each their own, lol.

I think that the most over-rated handgun is anything made out of plastic.

Why? Because it is made out of plastic.

Under Rated: Several come to mind, but the P3AT Keltec would be near the best of the under rated handguns I've owned.

The HK P7 family. They are incredibly accurate with a single action trigger once it is cocked. There is very low felt recoil due to the low bore axis.

Plus, it is an extremely safe handgun as well.

Agree with malpasowildlifer - the HK P7 was a design ahead of it's time. I was finally able to get one when the ex-German police guns came flooding in. Scary accurate.

Also - underated, the old Remington M51 .380 auto pistol. Production ceased long ago, but it has to be one of the best .380's I've ever had the pleasure to shoot.

Not over rated colt python it's way over priced.

My ex-colt python w/6" barrel could make pin point shots a on any small rock I could see on the 100yds berm. Using my Speer 140gr jhp reloads. I haven't shot my s&w m28' s 6" barrels yet with my reloads. Python over priced not over rated. I've owned a python. I can't rate a gun I never owned. When I shoot my s&w m28 @ 100yds and if she shoots as good as my python did were going to scream this from the highest point on the net. Trust me the whole gun world will know.

I have seen the tightest cylinder lock up get out shot by floating cylinder before in accuracy

Underrated,

CZ 82/83/75/85 pistols. I find these very robust in there designs and flawless in operation.
Chinese norinco firearms I find these sometimes copies to be just as good if not a tad better than the originals.
S&W N frame revolvers I find them very well balanced when it comes to the power to weight ratio. My new m58 w/4" barrel in 41mag handles and shoots awesome. I been a ruger 44mag guy for decades and I enjoy shooting the s&w n frame revolver. I have no clue why I waited so long to try them.

Ruger revolvers from the double action & single action revolvers.
I find them very robust and Mack truck strong. There not that Purdy but they will handle any hot load I put in them. I did some way over the top loads in my crazy early days of reloading. I never hurt a ruger revolver in this process.

I am not easily impressed, but after I bought mine, I stumbled upon another (not as nice cosmetically) and bought it for my son. I used to carry his rather than mine, until he turned 21 and asked for it. Both of these are commercial models.

I'm not willing (qualified) to comment on over rated hand guns because it is mostly a personal preference.

Under rated handguns (IMHO):
Ruger SP101 in .357 4.2"- a balanced, soft shooting accurate, do anything workhorse. (Wish it was a six shooter)!
FNH FNP (FNS), a pleasure to shoot, reliable, concealable, terrific handguns
Springfield XDs .45. a fine conceal carry gun in .45acp.

Overrated? Just one? O.K. Here's one... 1911's. To hear some folks talk, the 1911 is the epitome of handguns. Actually, no. For a .45 ACP, it's fine. For other calibers like 9mm, .40 S&W, there are better designs. I've got two 1911. Fine design. But, lots of work to get one that will really shoot small groups. If actually were going to use a semi-auto for something serious, would almost certainly get a Glock, lighter, more rounds, excellent trigger, profoundly reliable w/ any standard ammunition, etc.

Underrated? One? O.K. Here's one... S&W Model 10. We all know the reasons why... not a semi, only six shots, notfitted w/ a rail, common iron sights same as for last hundred years or so, steel frame not plastic, wood grips not rubber and of course domestic not imported.

You've had bad Colts too? My python was out of time. Two brand new 1911 had problems right out of the box new.

Overrated: Colt Marine 1911.

Underrated: CZ. Particularly the CZ-75 which most gun shops have shoved in the back of the case behind all the polymer handguns.
