I'm trying to figure out if this is a combat knife or a commercial knife. I'm leaning to commercial but I could not find out for sure if it is. Their is no other marking on the knife besides "EGW knife". What is it worth?

Thanks, James

Knife authority M. H. Cole says that your blade was sold commercially during WWII.
He says it was probable not an official gov issue knife.
It was carried by thousands of US Servicemen.

As others have said these are commercial knives that many servicemen bought for themselves personally. Few realize that the US could not supply enough knives throughout the entire war. Life magazine started a knife drive asking civilians to send a knife to servicemen overseas. My neighbor joined up late in 1944 and was given cash by the navy so he could secure himself a knife. He sent a letter to his mother and she sent him his Boy Scout knife from home. I have seen these knives advertised in outdoor magazines as late as 1960. I have several in my military knife collect. One is what is known as a "ID" as it has the serviceman's name and rank scratched on the sheath. Sargent Taylor IIRC.

I have absolutely no idea what it's worth, but I'd like to have that ol' knife.

Well after some digging, I did find out more about it:
