So I was born in 1976 and I was thinking it would be kinda of cool to own an iconic firearm that was made in 1976 or during that time frame that was made in 1976.

Any suggestions?

S&W Model 19 or 66 4 incher.
Probably the most in demand and most issued Police hand gun at that time.

To me the best 1976 guns are any Rugers made that year. They all have this wonderful thing stamped on the side of them (and seem to be great guns too, not sure if they paid special attention that year or what).

I'd suggest something like a 4" Security Six or any Speed Six made that year. It's a gun you will own forever, is pretty inexpensive, and was undeniably born at the same time you were.

It's mighty hard to get one from a specific year - you'd need to get a serial number range and shop that way. Doing it in reverse, namely, buying a Model 19 because they were popular in 1976, iconic fits, too, can easily get you one made in some other decade unless you know the numbers.

Colt made centennial versions of the Peacemaker. 1976 was also the centennial of the Custer/Little Big Horn battle, maybe the most "celebrated" use of the SAA by the U.S. military.

I recently bought a 1979 stainless 4" Security Six in excellent condition ($292 out the door). My first handgun was a '79 6"er that I sold years ago when I moved out of state for a while. As stated above, a nice ol' Ruger "Six" would be a great choice.

Yep all Rugers made in 1976 had that cool rollmark, My choice would be a snub nose security six.

I have the gf-32 security six, the 10/22 and I that's manufactured in '76 with the made in 200th. I'm the original owner with the box too.
I just seen a '77 security six without the 200th go for $750. That puts the gf-32 worth more. The gf-32 was never in the catalog.
I did find a excellent condition security six 357/6" blued for $199.

This is so easy.
You need a Colt BiCentennial Set.

1776 of these sets were made in 1976. Over the years many were split apart and the firearms sold off separately. It is unknown how many remain as complete sets

Three firearms are housed in this walnut case along with a commemorative book. In the top drawer is a Colt Python that is engraved with patriotic scenes. In the second drawer is a Colt SAA that is also engraved. In the bottom drawer is a Colt Dragoon complete with powder flask and tools. All three revolvers carry the same serial number.

Bought 3 J frames last year hoping they would all be from 1960 (my birth year). Only the model 36 was. Even if you have serial number range for the year it still not guaranteed without confirming with S&W or getting gun lettered.

My 1960 model 36 is special being that it was made the same year I was. You'll enjoy your's also. Like other posted above, a bicennetial gun seems perfect.

Good hunting for you special gun.

Easy! S&W 29-2, 6 and 1/2 inch barrel. 44 magnum the most powerful handgun in the world, and in 76 it still pretty much still was. Dirty Harry still in every ones mind.

Shot my first 44 mag in 76, a 29-2 6 and 1/2 incher, I was 13 and remember it like it was yesterday. Liked so much had to have my own, although it took a few decades.

ICONIC!!!

Yeah you gotta go with Dirty Harry's .44 Mag the iconic gun of the time.

H&R was making Trap-door Springfields in 45-70. They made full length rifles and an "Officers" model that is a very good copy of the custom model for officers. The quality of shooter accuracy is better in serial numbers below 5000. These guns are safe with factory smokeless ammo, but they perform best with soft lead bullets over Black Powder. Ivan

Starsky and Hutch was the iconic TV show of 1976. How about a blue 6" Python, in honor of Hutch, or a Model 39, for Starsky? :)

And maybe a red Grand Torino with a white stripe. :p
