Hello,

As recently as a month ago, I shot my SP with no problem. Since then, I haven't touched it. Tonight, when I got it out the cylinder is spinning freely. No lock up at all. When I pull the hammer back for SA, it will sort of go into battery (not the right term) but will still not totally lock up.

Since it was functioning fine and now this, I am at a bit of a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

Open the cylinder and put a couple of drops of oil on the cylinder lock which is the little piece of metal sticking up through the little slot cut in the bottom of the inside of the frame. Give it a minute to wick its way around and work the action a few times. This may help but someone probably needs to take a look inside. Good luck, Ricci.

That action comes apart like the security six does. There's a pin in the frame when u remove the grip to lock the hammer spring. Then remove the spring and guide assembly. Now remove the hammer pin and hammer. Stick the ball of the guide spring or a screwdriver inside where the hammer slot is and push the plunger then the whole trigger assembly comes out.

Thanks. It's locked up for the night so I will have to dig into it tomorrow.

So I finally had time to pull it all apart. No obvious broken parts or malfunctions I can see. Gave it an extremely thorough cleaning and went over everything. Reassembled and have the exact same issue. Feeling pretty frustrated. Pretty broke right now (who has extra money at Christmas?), so I guess I will be saving until I have the $ to take it to the gunsmith :(

cylinder stop spring is broken, or gummed up. Try Breakfree on it, or lacquer thinner. If that don't work, order a spring from Brownell's.

Don't be bashful about calling Ruger for repair parts. I called about rear sight springs for an SP101 .327 magnum. They sent the springs and a new rear sight screw for free!
I didn't buy the gun new, but the rep didn't even ask about that.

I contacted customer service. We will see what they say. Guess it can't hurt to at least try.

Just got an email back that they want me to call for an RMA so they can look at it. So far, score +1 for Ruger.

I got my SP back from the factory. Very quick turnaround and according to the paperwork it has a new hammer, trigger, trigger plunger, cylinder latch, springs, and plungers. I have not yet had a chance to take it to the range to test it yet. I will say the mechanisms are very tight.
I know a lot of people like to go to the internet to complain, but I have to say that I am extremely impressed with their customer service. In a little over a week (including a holiday) they completely repaired an almost 20 year old gun and had it back to me for the cost of me shipping it to them (no charge for the return shipment). This is the type of thing that keeps me a loyal customer.

Glad to hear you got the SP squared away. I sent them my 9mm SP a few months back for a tune up. I asked them if they could install the DAO hammer so the 9 would match my DAO .357 SP. Got the gun back in a little over a week with a bunch of new parts and the hammer installed.......free of charge. They even mailed back the original hammer as I requested. I've also had some very good experiences with S&W Customer Service but Ruger seems to be a tad better.

I've sent 3 Rugers back, my 1960's Single Six for the trigger upgrade, a $1 that had rust from the saltwood stock and a Ruger OU Skeet and skeet in 20 that would not cock one bbl.

They did right on all, new #1 and on the OU they replaced the fore end, the bbls and parts, It came back better than new.

And the neat part on the #1 I got to speak to Bill Ruger.

Their CS was great for me.

Glad they made yours new again. Good feeling isn't it?
