The guns were made by JP Sauer. They made the 'Hawes' line of SAA revolvers that were imported and sold in the US pre-68 and the Herters 401 (and 357 & 44mag) are versions of those models.

The grip frame configuration & hammer shape is a little odd shaped for most people but they were fitted up quite well. Trigger pulls could use some work on most of them. Separate firing pin in the frame like a Ruger and no transfer bar, so they are a 5 shooter like the 3 screw Rugers or Colt SAA.

The 401 is a 40cal. Brass was available from Herters (I think Norma actually made the stuff).
You can simply resize 41Mag down a few .000.
Then trim it back something like .006" and have the same case. The rim is the same IIRC. Then load 'em up.
..that is if you have 401 Herter Mag dies which can be pricey when found. A simple straight wall sizer die could be made easily enough. The OD of the case can be surely found on the net somewhere.

Reboring to 41Mag?,,that would be a bbl rebore/re-rifle from 40cal to 41cal plus a rechambering as the 401 chamber is just a few .000" smaller in dia than the 41Mag.
The small difference in caliber might not allow for the rebore from 40 to 41,,that's something the person doing the work would have to figure by measuring the groove depth.
You might as well rebore & rechamber to 44mag,,a caliber the gun was offered in originally and easier to get components.
Worth the bother?? you have to decide that.
As much as I like odd-ball calibers and the guns they go with I'd probably pass on this one. But everyone has a different view of things.

40S&W or 10mmauto are very close, within .001 of the original case dia. But being rimless, they pose the problem of headspacing in the already chambered .401 cylinder.

Just my thoughts...

Well, first, I feel that the asking price is too high. If you want it, maybe offer $350? It takes a special customer to dive in to something this esoteric. So that's your bargaining advantage! Not, that there aren't rewards to be had...
The 401 cartridge has it's attributes. It was likely inspired by the .400 Eimer and .400 Boser, both wildcats. One of those two guys wrote extensively about their lovely "ballistic offspring".
You can form brass from 41 mag or 30-30. I believe one of the unique qualities is the ability to use heavy cast bullets intended for the 40-65, and a few others. (Faster rifling twist?) So, potentially, that's a slight advantage over the 41 mag.
The Herter Powermag (as mentioned previously, by J.P. Sauer of Germany) is well made.
Personally, some aftermarket grips would improve the "George Jetson meets Colt Bisley" appearance.

I think I have one round in my cartridge collection. Let me know if you need specs.

If you get it, please share the adventure!!

There is a website about the .401 case forming procedures starting with .41 Mag cases here: 401 Herter Powermag I wouldn't personally have any problem in making the reforming dies as explained, but then I have the machine tools to do it. I believe I (or anyone having a drill press) could make up a far simpler forming die (using a 27/64 drill bit and a mild steel plate) than the one shown if just for short-term use to form several hundred cases. A substantial large bench vise could probably substitute for a hydraulic press to squeeze down the base to size. I love to improvise ways to do things like this.

I don't know, but there may actually be someone out there making .401 cases to sell. I'm not sure what reloading dies should be used, but .40 S&W or (preferably) 10mm dies would work OK, and could also be used for the first stage of case forming. Anyway, once you make up 100 or so cases, you won't have to form any more unless you shoot a lot. I would not re-bore the revolver's chambers to .41 Mag.

No guts, no glory. Just think of the nice writeup you could make here about your Powermag experience. I probably wouldn't jump at it at $400, but I well might like it much better in the $250-$300 range. And I have lots of .41 Mag fired cases to play with and no .41 Mag revolver. I enjoy the challenge of oddball guns and strange cartridges. I have lots of both.

I am pretty sure that back in the 1960s and early 70s, I remember these sold for somewhat less than $100. They were also made in .357 and .44 Mag. Powermags are rarely seen today, I think I saw my last one about three years ago.

Default 401 power mag

I think $400 for a 401 power mag is a bit optimistic, all things considered. The 401 is the first center fire revolver I ever fired, back in the mid 60's. It was owned by an Uncle who was a bit esoteric himself. He reloaded for it, and I credit him for sparking my interest in powerful revolvers and in reloading.

I have one in 357 Magnum. It is a good quality revolver, and heavy as a boat anchor! I'd like to have one in 401, but not at $400.
