.45 ACP - which pistol should go in safe ?

A 1911 is a good choice, my old war horse seldom leaves my side. Reliable and, accurate.

The thing that concerns me about these 3rd generation (and even earlier generation) metal-framed guns is how long will parts be obtainable? If I remember correctly, S&W isn't maintaining them anymore.

The thing about a 1911, especially a good one, is that they are a dream to shoot...and you can get a wide, wide variety of aftermarket parts for them. Any gunsmith should be able to work on them, if you buy one without a lifetime warranty.

SIG P220s are a great choice. H&K makes very good pistols too.

Other alternatives are the polymer frame models on the market today...like M&Ps, from full size down to the Shield. Ruger has a new polymer .45, the American. They also make another polymer pistol, the SR45.

I expect my 4506 will be in working order long after I am.

I'm late to the party but will toss opinion in. For a 1911 take a look at the Remington R1 enhanced series. I recently purchased a enhanced Stainless R1 in .45 ACP for $745.00 and I found it to be money very well spent. I also own two other Remingtons and have found all three very reliable and accurate. Second up is the Sig P-220 they are great pistols and one can be had SA only. Happy hunting!

Glock 21.

If you can't handle the Glock, get a 1911

If you secretly like the Glock but don't want your friends to know, get a xd or M&P

Enjoy life and get one of each, 1911, 625, ruger conversion and any other you can find. 45acp are my top choice

I had a S&W 1911 and as in all 1911's it was a PITA to field strip to clean. I must have sent the recoil spring and rod into orbit a few times, knowing full well what to expect.

I bought a 4506 a few years ago and I will never part with it.

this..............

I love to shoot this gun. Shoots anything I have put in it. Probably around 2K so far trouble free. Ball and HP's 230 grain factory. Colt makes a pretty good gun in the .45 Government.
Peace,
Gordon

Colt's current production of Gold Cups and Gov't models are THE CHOICE IMHO! They are TOP QUALITY now-days and within your budget.

S&W 1911 and Ruger SR 1911 should both fall well under where you want to be. I enjoy both of them equally. The softest shooting 45acp I have ever shot is the S&W 4566 TSW. The Sig 220 is another good choice.

I'm with Houston Rick and Roc Doc on this matter. I own or have owned four Colt 1911 including a Series 70 Gold Cup, Pre Series 70 Government, Government in .38 Super and a Combat Elite. All good guns, but I've never fallen in love with any of them. But, I do love my venerable 4506 and my 4516 and 4566. However, IMHO the 4506 is the pick of the litter.

I had a 4506 a long time ago and loved it then. Knowing what I know now, I would never use one for self-defense. That's not to say it isn't a good gun. It just has some flaws in the design that make it more difficult to use for self-defense.

CZ 97 anyone? It's a big hulking gun, so only for those with big mitts to hold it. Trigger will never be as good as the 1911, but ergonomics and felt recoil are much better IMO, and it is SA/DA to boot.

I'm a 1911 guy so my 1st choice would be a 45ACP 1911. My second choice would be the S&W 45ACP Shield. I bought one a month ago and love it. Very light weight carry gun and the recoil is not much more than my Ruger 9mm LW Commander!! Less muzzle rise than the 9mm also.

Also a little late to the party. I have three (3) S&W 45 ACP's. My beloved 4506 (former duty sidearm), my 1911 e series (most accurate handgun I have had out of the box), and my M&P (my present duty sidearm).

Any one of these three would serve you well.
