This is my Mossberg 500 12 ga.Pump Shotgun.I changed the pistol grip to a ATI pistol grip folding stock.It's my first and favorite shotgun.

Well, you didn't mention "purpose", so I was torn as to which is my favorite. Now I must post two pictures I guess. Both are Winchesters, and their purpose and build are quite different. Both rate "favorite" status with purpose being the difference.

For trap and wobble clays, my Winchester Diamond Grade 101 takes the #1 position (12 GA):

Here's my only 12 gauge, for now. Remington 870 set up with an 18 inch cylinder bore barrel and a +2 mag extension.

Mossberg 500. Sidesaddle, Choate stock, Tactical Tailor sling. 590 heat shield with a bright white arrow (classier version of what we did in the Marines --- a strip of medical tape to help aiming at night).

Any of these could qualify as my favorite shotgun, except the of course, the Kimber in the middle.

Here's my favorite shotgun......

My favorite shotgun is this 1928 A.H. Fox Sterlingworth in 12
ga. It has 28" barrels. The stock needed refinishing, and it
has a period correct Silver recoil pad. I shoot sporting clays
with it once in a while. I'm the only one to show up with a
side by side.

I like SxS shotguns also and my favorite is an inexpensive Yildiz 20 gauge SxS with removeable chokes and single trigger. It weighs 5-1/2 lbs and is joy to use for bird hunting the only thing that would be better is if it had an english straight grip and double trigger. I'm still looking for one of those but they are really pricey and where we hunt the guns can get a bit scratched up.

I can't hit anything with a shotgun so I don't shoot them very often (maybe the reason I can't hit anything is I don't shoot often enough). However I do like this little 28 gauge Darne. Incidently, this is the lowest grade of Darne; you should see some of the fancy ones!

Is the second gun from left a Weatherby/SKB? Looks like a Beretta action, otherwise. But that long pistol grip says Weatherby, I think.

My Grandfather's Winchester Model 12, he bought it new
in 1927, and was his favorite hunting gun

Little blue left. and the factory wood had seen a lot of field time, but not a speck of rust anywhere.

I inherited it when he passed. Hunted with it plenty, in the condition I received it.

Decided to make it look new again, off to Simmons, new blue
and a vent rib, upgraded the wood.

I occasionally give it some air at the clay club, and it can
still smoke targets with the best of them.

I cut it at the bend and made a single barrel blackpowder Coach gun.
Perfectly balanced at the trigger

Winchester Stainless Marine. My retirement gift.

This is my KSG. 28" overall length,15 round capacity. I will use my pistol to get to this weapon in any kind of emergency situation that requires firepower under 50 yards. It has over 5k rounds through it and the action is model 12 slick.(really) Titanium trigger (I hate plastic triggers). Kickeze pad,K-T choke tubes. I carry it on a single bungee sling. Eotech holographic 512 sight. I use it occasionally for Sporting Clays,to the disapproval of my squad members..as I usually kick their Krieghoff butts.

The other is my money gun.(and favorite) If the chips are on the table..this 12 gauge Browning Citouri XS Skeet comes out of the safe. Large factory palm swell for my big ole hands,14 3/4" lop, 30" ported barrels,Bruce Ney hydraulic recoil reducer with floating parallel comb.Shoot 3-400 rounds in a day with NO shoulder bruise. Over 80k. rounds through it and is still tight as a bank vault door.I made it to NSCA Master Class with this fine weapon.

I do love my handguns,but at heart, I am a shotgunner.

I have a thing for shotguns; much more so than a thing for Smith & Wesson revolvers. Above all else I think of myself as an upland bird hunter and it is what my life revolvers around. For over 40 years there has been an English Setter or two in the house. My gun safe is full of various side by side shotguns and a few pumps. Beside my desk I have grouse tails sitting on the book shelf that is filled with books on hunting birds. I am a bird hunter. I have side by side shotguns made to hunt upland game from 12 to 28 gauge. Of those guns there are few that are special and what I grab most often when heading into the field, grass and sage covers hills and my secret grouse coverts. Of those guns there is one that is very special is a 120 year old Belgian double.

That Belgian side by side shotgun was manufactured for the sporting goods store William Read & Son of Boston. I have couple shotguns I shoot better but not by much. The quality of manufacture of the William Read is about equal to my H&H. Even after 120 years when it snap shut, it does so with that solid snap of quality. There is just so much about this old double that makes it something special. One is the type of man that ordered this gun.

I wish I knew that man. I would love to know his thought process when ordering this gun, all those years ago. He did so with a purpose. He knew something about what makes a perfect upland hunting side by side shotgun; especially when hunting over a good pointing dog. The man that ordered this gun was a very forward thinker. He was a man of good taste in guns. He ordered a very finely made shotgun. It is tastefully engraved with beautiful but understated wood. It has a few other fine touches, checkered cheeks, horn butt plate and side clips to add a little straight and stabilization to the barrels. Nothing about it is over the top. It shows he ordered it for himself without a thought of impressing others.

According to the Belgian nitro proof stamps on its 26 inch fine Damascus barrels, it was choked cylinder and full. The load recommended was a 1 1/8 oz. 3 dram load of 33 grains Schultze & New “E.C.” Bulk Smokeless powder. That would be a great load for pa'tridge (ruffed grouse) in New England. Having that cylinder bore for that close shoot as a tight sitting pat flushes wildly out from in front of a solid point in thick cover. That is what you want for that close first shot; an open choke. That second shot. from the full barrel, shows the man was deliberate with his second shot. He willing to wait for the right moment to pull the trigger as the bird slaloms through the trees.

The stock dimensions are not the norm for most American shotguns of the period. At that time most shotguns sold had a huge amount of drop at comb and heal of the butt stock. Most today find those old doubles nearly unshootable but they wouldn't find that with this shotgun. It has dimensions you would find on a modern Browning or Beretta. The first owner knew his guns and I suspect how to shot them. He was not your average New England farmer shooting rabbits, squirrels and limb swatting grouse for the pot. He hunted more than likely hunted with a pointing dog like a a well trained English Setter. I suspect the thought of limb swatting a sitting bird was repugnant to him. He hunted for the sport and all that it involved. I think adding a bird to his bag was just a small part of why he hunted.

He was fastidious in his care of his guns. This gun has seen a lot of rounds but is still tight as a tick. He kept the hook cleaned and properly lubricated. There is no oil soaked into the head of the stock which shows care and proper storage. The barrels still measure as proofed and are still bright after 120 years. This gun was always cleaned at the end of the day. Those barrels still show a reasonable amount of their original plum brown and white finish. They ring like church bells when hung from the hook on one finger and tapped. Yes, it shows the original owner, and others that became caretakers, of this fine gun did their job while its guardian.

When I saw this old gun, I had to be its next caretaker. I still hunt with it and it has made some memories. I killed my first Sharptail grouse with it; over solid point from Gentry one of my English Setters. I've shot pheasant over other points by Gentry and Timber. I've used it to hunt sage grouse, pheasant, sharpies and ruffed grouse.

It is a gun that I will not part with in my lifetime. Hopefully when I pass it will go to a new caretaker. A caretaker that will also appreciate it, use it as intended, care for it and then pass it on.

Yes, the second from right is a Weatherby Athena 20 gauge. It is the go-to shotgun. The Kimber is chambered in 30.06.

I am actually truly shotgun poor. I only have about a dozen. I've
always been a rifle hunter. Only use a shotgun on birds and
rabbits. I don't like to hunt Turkey with a shotgun, but in Ohio
I have no choice. I have m12s-m97-A5s and a couple quality
doubles. If I had to pick one it would be my dads old Belgian A5.
It was his main meat gun he used for local hunting of rabbits and
grouse. When I got old enough to hunt on my own and dad wasn't able to go, he let me use it. I guess it was my Grail gun
at the time. Dad had a rack full of shotguns, he shot trap and
did a lot of out of state pheasant & grouse. I guess he considered
the old Brn his beater. I bought him a Browning O/U for fathers
day one year. His rack was full, he handed me the A5 and put
the new O/U in the slot.

I realized long ago that I would never own my desired Purdey SXS with a case-hardened receiver and rose and scroll engraving, and that's okay.

But I do like this Browning/Miroku sidelock 12 gauge very much.

They are all my favorites, even the not pictured Savage 24V in .223/20GA.

Probably my favorite Shotgun is my 2005 Ruger Gold Label
Side by Side 12 gauge, Single trigger, English straight grip
Stock with different changeable chokes.

The shot shells there, were the cleanest shooting.

I love a Remington 870 with hardwood furniture.

We don't use plywood in NC for furniture. (Wanted to insert a big smiley face here so you'd know I was kidding around, but the regular reply function isn't working for me)

Winchester if its old-mossberg if its newer.

I have two shotguns I consider my favorites. However, if I had to choose one, it would be the one my family gave to me in the year 2000.

Arrieta 578, 16-gauge, 28-inch barrels, choked Skeet 1 & Skeet 2.

I don't have pictures to post (yet) but I am quite taken by a Brit boxlock made in Manchester. The maker is Hepplestone, well thought of by anyone familiar with his work. From the address on the rib and the proof marks my best guess has it made in 1896. 2 1/2 " chambered 30" twist barrels choked .013 and .035. A very nice piece of wood with a checkered butt. Straight grip, double triggers, intercepting sears, and well timed ejectors. The only thing I would change is the auto safety, a feature I abhor. And all this at only 6 1/2 lbs. That one is a treasure. Mark

Here is my other favorite shotgun. I bought this Browning Superposed "Lightning" brand new in 1972 from the Yong Song PX in Seoul, S. Korea, for $197. With this bird gun I've bagged Valley quail, Mountain quail, Scaled quail, Gambel's quail, Mearn's quail, Bobwhite quail, Morning dove, Whitewing dove, Ringneck pheasant, Sharptail grouse, a few Rock pigeons and a couple of aggrevating crows.

Browning Superposed "Lightning," 20-gauge, 26.5-inch barrel, choked Modified & Improved Cylinder.

I've tried to "like" shotguns.... but after all those years on HS and College Rifle teams ...... shotguns just seem so............ messy!

So a couple of Mossburgs is all I've got .........

Wait there are 2 O/U 's in the back of the safe.....IIRC one's Italian and one's Spanish(?)... at least one if not both are 20's... both bought from gunsmiths/friends that "said" they were well made....I should really get them out an give them a try.


Bird hunting with friends w/ dogs is a great way to spend a Saturday.

Mojave30cal, if you don't mind, where did you get that recoil pad for your Sterlingworth? I'd love to get one for my 1920 Fox.

I'll add my favorites, a couple of nickel Ithaca cruisers.

I've never been a bird hunter, so the few I have are configured towards home defense. This Wingmaster is my favorite. I just put the rifled barrel on it, and it's going with me in June. That's when my wife and I, along with two other couples, are going to spend a week on the Kenai River, in Soldotna, Alaska. My friends Dennis and Jerry plan on spending the entire week fishing all the popular spots for salmon. I've seen guys lined up on the river banks, and that has no appeal for me. I'm going fish a few small lakes with light tackle for Dolly Varden and Arctic Char, plus I'm going rockhounding on a couple remote beaches. This gun (which I refer to as my "poor man's stopping rifle") will be my constant companion!

My 12g and 20g 870's.

My BRNO 16 bore sidelock.

I got this old war horse from Montgomery Wards in 1954 for $55.00 with a Boyt sheep lined case. It's a model 12 Winchester government riot gun in 12 gauge. It has all the military proofs, cartouches and proper cylinder bore. It also has been seriously bubbaed. It has a Weaver choke, beavertail forearm, rubber butt pad, pistol grip cap and has been checkered. I have used this shot gun all my life hunting pheasants and quail. This and my model 12 20 gauge are the only shot guns I now have.





You can see the WB cartouche lightly in the center of the stock.
