Shockwave!
Got one.
A Mossberg 590 Shockwave, that is!
This gun reminds me of the old school cut down shotguns you'd see in '70s and '80s police movies, so I think it pairs nicely with my M64-6.
For those not familiar with this gun, it is a non-NFA 14" barreled pistol-grip shotgun from Mossberg based on their 590 series guns. It requires no extra paperwork or a tax stamp. Here is a link:
https://www.mossberg.com/category/series/590-shockwave/
As far as using one for defense work, Clint Smith of Thunder Ranch has a video demonstrating the proper technique:
I'll put this little "whippet gun" through its paces at the range and pattern some reduced-recoil buckshot with it and might end up using it for defense in my small bedroom. I could also see this being a great camper or RV gun, or even to have stowed away behind the seat of a pickup truck or in the trunk (if legal in your area).
Overall I'm excited to own one of these cool and unique guns and can't wait to shoot it! Take care my friends!

They are cool. I have yearned for a short barreled AOW shotgun for a while. When I found out about these, I figured it was time to pull the trigger. Remington 870's and me go back a long time. I have a Asylum Weaponry Gatekeeper II waiting to be picked up at my local gun shop. I'll let you know how it does after I wring it out. I've got plenty of 12ga. ammo that needs to be shot.

Coincidentally, I picked mine up today. I pre-ordered it about 3 months ago. I am waiting to get my hands on some of the Aguila mini-shells before I put it through its paces. Not too anxious to run full load buckshot through it.

I agree. I was on the fence, as my usual defense long gun is now a carbine. That said, this Mossberg Shockwave seems to be a good idea.

I saw a rather cryptic reference to "Texas & U.S. Law Shield" and the new Mossberg Shockwave in my latest issue of TSRA Sportsman (just received it last Friday) with the admonition that the Shockwave is probably NOT legal in the state of Texas. Bottom line... this doesn't look good.
You may want to look into this. I looked up the link.
Mossberg Shockwave | Texas & U.S. Law Shield

I've never shot a Mossberg, maybe I'll try that.
I have a Winchester Defender 12ga. I put a pistol grip on it and it's a great shooter. I usually pack it around in the back of the truck. It's loaded with #4 BS. I wouldn't want to stand in front of it.

Was it in stock? If not, how long was the wait?
I've been thinking about getting one myself.
Not quite there yet.

It was $389.00 from Buds Gun Shop. Free shipping and a $15 transfer fee brought it to just over $400.

I don't own one yet, but after shooting one last weekend, I will! There's just nothing about it I don't like.

I walked into the LGS to see if they could order one and if so, how much? Much to my surprise there was one hanging on the wall behind the counter. After sleeping on it, I went back a couple days and forked over the cash. Total wait time was about 15 minutes, apparently timing IS everything...

Looks like a nicely thought out and produced close quarters shotgun.
Might get one if they offer it in 16 gauge. Don't want over penetration inside the domicile. A 16 gauge should also be easier handling. Might serve as a good truck gun. At only 26.3" overall length I suspect a shoulder rig to be available soon.

I doubt you would ever see one in 16 ga- Secondary to availability of reduced recoil 12 ga, and all the options in defensive loads, while the 16 has next to nothing. Prob see a 20ga for the recoil sensitive. My wife has 16 ga SXS, semi, pump, still looking for lever and o/u for her.
A shoulder holster would be nice, will prob have a friend make one once I understand where it fits in my state laws. Be Safe,

I definitely agree with you. If you don't learn to shoot it and don't find a load that both you and the gun like, then it is useless. In other words, just like any other gun that I've owned.

Andrews holsters in Fla has been making a shoulder rig for short shotguns for years.

If it catches on the way it appears to be, you'll probably see Remington do the same with it's 870.

rem 870
I needed one 20 some years ago, big bear gun in Alaska.
This was my answer. I bought a brand new Remington 870 express, filed a form 1 with ATF (long before the B and the E letters ), when that came back I chucked her up and cut her off.....remounted the sight, took a huge buffing wheel and polished off the damn rough metal (I think it was bead blasted and I hated it) sent it to Arizona response systems and had it metacol finished. I have drug it all over Alaska slung over my back whilst fishing. It still looks new, that finish is tough and super weather resistant. The barrel is 11 3/4" and the entire gun is 24". It is a handful and like the Thunder Ranch video preaches: keep it away from your face! I put a 3" mag in it once just to see how hard it kicked............pushed all the way out and with both arms braced and ready for it, it bounced my right thumb off my nose. Yeah once was way more than enough. I call it my "crowd pleaser" The deal on the Mossy is great, I have way more that that in this one with the tax stamp and the custom finish and it is forever a SBS.

I like your gun! Looks like an excellent self-defense-in-the-woods-and-everywhere-else gun.
I wouldn't mind seeing some closer shots of the finish. And what kind/brand swivel did you install on the birdshead?

I just brought home my Remington 870 Asylum GatekeeperII. I was wondering if I should sling it like shamrocker or go with a Voodoo Shotgun Scabbard. That brought up a couple of questions:
1. Is there enough thickness on the plastic grip to mount (drill and screw in) a lug for a sling swivel, if I want to attach a sling?
2. I think I'll attach a hand strap to the fore end. Would that interfere with a sling?
3. If I want to use a Voodoo Scabbard, is there enough room to accommodate a sidesaddle with extra shells?

a quick answer: I have no idea what brand the birdshead grip is that I installed but there was plenty of meat in it to drill it and install a QR stud for the swivel on the sling, I would think the ones on the factory remington and the mossy also for that matter would also have enough meat to them. I also have a leather scabbard that I had a shoe repair shop build for me a long time ago........ not to carry it on me but to strap it to the handlebars of my Harley I haven't done that for a long time...I mean what do you do with it when you park? If I pull it out and sling it, folks are going to call out the swat team. I sure ain't gonna leave it on the bike. A great idea that wasn't. If you go to Arizona Response Systems, LLC. Firearm Finishes Photo Gallery. Mark has some great pictures of what he can do with this finish.

The Voodoo scabbard fits tightly so I don't think it will work with a sidesaddle.

I hope it works. After looking at the Voodoo website and seeing that Voodoo says that it is compatible with their scabbard, I ordered one. Although if it doesn't, I see where the Rossi Ranch Hand is a good fit.

No, mine doesn't have the hand strap. I went ahead and ordered an aftermarket one from Shockwave.

I was very impressed with the way the Shockwave handled, and patterned.
It is also the first firearm I've ever shot that I would consider stippling the grip; the birdshead handle, while very comfortable, was just a touch on the slick side for something with ample recoil.

I wonder if something like this might be good for the grip?

I was. The #4 bucks were about as beefy as I felt shooting in quantity.
I believe an adapter is required, sold separately of course, to allow for reliable feeding of the wee shells.

Devil's Advocate, I know...
Hi people. Before we start carrying the Shockwave with a chest strap or tossing it behind the seat of a pickup as a truck gun, perhaps it would be better to first see if law enforcement agencies are clued in to this item. To us, the Shockwave looks cool. Guaranteed it won't look that way, loaded, to a cop on a car stop at 1AM. It will simply be a "sawed-off shotgun" to the uninitiated. And the argument that it is a "firearm" is not gonna fly (Of course, it is a firearm!); at the very least, a visit in cuffs to the station house seems likely until everything is sorted out.
Perhaps patience is called for: taking the gun in a gun case, unloaded, to the range for practice. Up to you...

I wouldn't want to be the arresting officer. Ignorance of the law is a two edged sword.

This should take care of any legality questions.

Any? Legal Questions.

My concern with your post is it would appear to be a blanket statement that Federal law will trump state statutes. My concern is that such thinking might place some of our members in legal jeopardy, those in Texas in particular.
I suggest a wait and see approach (at least for our Texas members) until we can get a definitive answer from the TSRA or the Texas AGs office.

Well, since we're talking about the Shockwave (in what I believe is the third thread about it), I'll offer my impressions of the gun.
Overall, I like it. At only 5.25 pounds, it seems incredibly light compared to my Model 12 riot guns.
I was pleasantly surprised at the recoil and muzzle jump. It isn't near as bad as I'd imagined. Using 0000 Buckshot and #4s...2-3/4 shells.
There are two things I kinda don't like about the gun.
One is the (to me) strangely shaped slide release on the right behind the trigger guard. I don't understand why it's shaped like that, instead of just being a bit thicker and rounded off with maybe some grooves in it. It has a sort of sharp edge on it, a bit of a point if you hit it wrong.
The other thing is the tang safety. Now, I like tang safeties just fine, okay? And there'll be no doubt in your mind whatsoever when you're sliding it forward to release it...because it feels like Mossberg went out of their way to give its serrations uncomfortably sharp edges. It feels like I'm running my thumb over a coarse metal file or something. It's also a bit hard to disengage, but maybe that'll loosen up with use. I haven't fired it that much.
Regarding scabbards for the Shockwave. I view this gun as a home defense/self-defense weapon, so I see no need for a scabbard for myself. I don't envision taking it along hiking in the mountains or through the woods. I might consider taking it along in the car or truck, but not in any sort of a scabbard or case...I don't want to have to use one hand to hold the scabbard and the other hand to remove the gun from it. It's small enough to lay on the seat under a coat or something. I may add sling swivels...haven't decided yet. Will not be adding tacticool stuff like a rail or light or one of those sidesaddle things.
For anyone who's interested, you can click here to read the BATFE's letter to Mossberg. I plan on making copies of it for each vehicle, along with copies of the purchase receipt. And possibly reduced size copies to keep in my billfold.
And as Mossberg cautions, the BATFE letter applies only to federal regulations. Laws, regs, or ordinances pertaining to this type of weapon may vary state to state, or even county to county and city to city.
So for now, I'm pleased with the gun overall. It's replaced one of my Model 12 riot guns as the laying-on-the-bedside-table-gun. No point to including any photos with this post...you see one Shockwave, you've seen 'em all.
Oh yeah...all this is just my opinion, okay?

Wouldn't it just be a $5 tax stamp as an AOW at the worse case like the Serbu Super Shorties?
per Serbu's website:
Quote:
The SUPER-SHORTY is based on a Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 (at additional cost) 12-gauge shotgun that came from the factory with a pistol grip. Because of this, the SUPER-SHORTY is considered an AOW (Any Other Weapon) and can be transferred with a $5 stamp!

I like the Shockwave. I just don't want to see anyone get "jammed up" with it by pushing the envelope. Good shooting!
