It's the house brand Marlin 90. Anyone have one of these?

The barrel marking also includes " Sears Roebuck & Company". It has remarkable balance. The serial number is R 134. The R indicates a DOB of 1957. My research shows only 895 were made in 12 gauge between 1945 -1957. I guess this was the 134th one produced in '57?? If that reasoning is correct, I guess this would be very close to the last one made under the J.C.Higgins name.

What is a decent price considering ...oh let's say...70% condition?

Pics will follow when Photobucket stops acting the fool.... ;)

Best,
Charles

We have a 12ga Marlin 90 from 1949, 30" F/F. It's a family heirloom from my wife's grandfather and earmarked for our son. They are well balanced and pretty indestructible. One of the more underrated O/Us.

You're correct the Higgins is the same except for markings. With Marlins the letter prefix to the s/n denoted the production year. I'm not sure that the Higgins guns followed the same s/n pattern as Marlin. It's been a while since I researched 90s, but it may be that Sears may have had their own s/n system. A good place to research is the Marlin Collector's forum. There are a couple of knowledgeable members there. They should also be able to advise the discount off of a Marlin marked gun.

I remember seeing some of the Marlin O/Us, but not a J. C. Higgins. Sears somewhat later sold an Italian Antonio Zoli O/U under the Sears name, but it was not a J. C. Higgins. I had one of those until relatively recently. Very basic twin trigger/fixed choke/extractor only model with plain wood, but very well made.

I can't get over how well it balances and "fits".

This would be an excellent gun for birds or clays. A brand name never made any difference ...... to the birds. ;)
