Anyone go back to a heavier EDC?

I do but, only at times when I’m not active. Most of the winter I stay in Florida. Walking around in warm weather makes carrying my favorite gun, Springfield XDM 3.8 9mm/ 20 Rounds, quite heavy. I save that gun for days I’m not doing anything but driving or at the Range.

A 642 to a 36 is not that much of a jump in weight, IMO. To that, I would say sure. Now would I go back to carrying a 40+ oz 686, absolutely not. I have learned that I will not EDC anything over 25 oz. Anything too heavy to carry beltless is not on my radar anymore.

The 1911 is just about my favorite handgun and also my most shot handgun. That said, years ago I tried carrying one - NOT for me! Just too large, heavy and bulky.

For 40+ years I carried a steel M60 and as I get older it became more painful to practice with - especially with carry loads (Buffalo Bore 158 Grain LSWCHP or Speer 135 grain GDHP). After trying out a Sig P365 that became my new carry gun about 5 years ago. Light, small, flat, reliable, accurate as hell, great night sights, 11 rounds on board, extended mag's available, and with the Federal 124 grain HST I never felt better armed.

Another, Older. Smaller. Lighter. Kinda guy. I've settled on a Sig P365 with an SMSc Red dot and a 12+1 124 gr. HST's and a spare mag. I feel pretty well heeled.

Add me to that roster.

P365 and P365x, usually the X.

I got the P365 before the X came out, and I’d sell it but once in a while that short butt gets the call for better no print concealment. I typically carry AIWB in a tuckable Galco holster and almost always tucked.

At my gun store or range job I open carry a 2 1/2” 386 PD seven shot 357 L frame. Sometimes something different for a change of pace. But I go back to the 19oz 386 because it’s so easy to carry for such a relatively big gun.

As the times get tougher, crime increases, more and more illegals pour in, police are retiring and quitting in droves, response times het longer and longer - now is NOT the time (IMHO of course) to decrease capacity or limit yourself to 5-6 rounds.

My Sig holds 11 on board with extra mag's of 10, 12 or 17. Only 5 in a cylinder no longer comforts me!

Recently injured my hand and shooting my 442 is painful. So pulled out the old 36 no dash and it is much more tolerable being all steel. Heavier in the pocket but I can shoot it without too much pain at the range until my hand gets better.

So anyone go back to a heavier gun?

Good call for switching to the 36. Certainly, it's not a good thing to exacerbate the hand injury. Well done for taking care of yourself. As in your situation, I think you showed the importance of having options when things and life go awry. Perhaps, if you didn't have the 36 you might have been able to shoot the 442 still by switching to the weak hand. That being said, with down time of the strong hand, you have an opportunity to train the weaker side.

When I was 21 , mean , lean & 195 lbs ... my EDC was a fullsized 1911 - AMT Hardballer.
As I have aged ... I have gotten heavier and my EDC has gotten lighter.

At 73 ... & 225 lbs ... my EDC is a J-Frame Air-Weight !

Funny how that works ... there must be some mathmatical formula to calculate what you can carry when you hit 90 ....

My thought is a walking cane that doubles/ converts into a handgun !

I have a cane that has a 18" sword blade concealed in it ... but that rascal has weight issues in the handle ... too much steel ...
Needs to be lighter ... Walking with that heavy-weight wears you out !

I cannot draw a lot of small guns properly because of the grip is too small in girth and the trigger reach is wrong. That is the price I pay for skinny hands with long fingers.

I carry a G19, I know pocket carry is a popular thing, especially a 5 shot revolver, but my philosophy on it is this.

I will most likely never use my carry pistol to defend my self, the odds are that good into my favor. but on the odd chance I have too, I want to have a tool that will help me move the odds of winning in my favor, and a 5 shot revolver, in my pocket is not going to do that for me. I want/need a pistol I'm intimately familiar with in a caliber that is effective and with sufficient capacity that I will most likely not require a reload.

I have no clue what my gun fight is going to be like, if it ever happens. Will it be 2 feet away? Will it be a 25 yd shot across a large space? If I could predict it, I would just stay home that day and avoid it all together.

I don't want to carry using the "It's better then a sharp stick" theory many apply, as were back to the odds again, which means I just as well not carry at all and still beat the odds. I carry for the stakes, not the odds as some one once said.

Again, my philosophy and mine alone, others are free to do as they like, just my $.02

More capacity for me, but I have 4 designated carry only guns depending on dress.

IMHO a gun that is heavy, cumbersome, large and uncomfortable for all day CCW is one that will probably be off your person when needed. Back in the early 1980's I was a newbie and prodded into carrying a 1911, (which BTW I do love 1911's). That lasted all of two weeks and I could not wait to get the damned thing off my belt! I spent half the day hiking up my pants and the other half quite uncomfortable! I also left it in my desk often because when it got hot concealment was a big issue.

As they say, better to have a .38 spl or 9mm always strapped on your person than the 45 you left in the drawer.

So anyone go back to a heavier gun? Hell No! The older I get the less I'm willing to haul around. That includes BUG, more than one knife, 1st aid kits, flashlights, tacatcool pens, etc. YMMV! I'm willing to step down in cal. to accommodate that. Thought I was done buying handguns, but I'm looking hard at the 43 C. Ya I know I'm being Targeted by a gang of zombie, meth head bikers moonlighting as a ninja death squad just for typing that.

When weather permits, I tend to carry larger heavier guns like a 5” 1911. The clothing’s ability to conceal allows this. As the weather warms to Hades levels in the summer, the gun shrinks to accommodate the change in ability to conceal. This often moves me to a J frame or small 380 when in shorts and Tees.

As the old Army saying goes, “Terrain dictates.”

That said, if I was having wrist/hand issues, I would make the same decision you have made.

Still, and been, carrying my Glock 27, for some time now. Got to packing a larger cal. when backpacking and camping in the Red River gorge area…black bears. And the 27 was a natural for summer carry to my normal CC G23. And both quite easy to hit with.

I swap back and forth from a m32 to a 2nd model .44 to a Taurus G3c to a Beretta 81BB to a Ruger Lcp .380 to a Colt Cobra .38 Spl and every now and then a 1956 Ruger Blackhawk .357 or my 70 Series 1911 .

After years of carrying the heaviest, most powerful guns I could manage, at 73 arthritis in my hands and back makes heavy guns very uncomfortable. I still "gunup" at times but generally carry a Colt detective special in 32 New Police (S&W long). Loaded with Buffaloe Bore wadcutters, makes a fairly formidable round and I can place them precisely and 20250513_103522.jpgquickly as the Colt is a superb revolver.

Not EDC, but we went to an event in St Louis recently. My friend said their car had been broken into down there. You have to leave your gun in the car when going to one of these events.
Not wanting to risk losing a good gun, I took my old, beat-up Springfield 1911. My EDC is a Glock 42. That 1911 felt like I was carrying a brick, literally.
A locking pistol box with a cable lock securing it to the seat mount is an excellent option and my only option if I have to leave a gun in the vehicle when going somewhere. Leaving a gun in the console or glove box or under the seat is just making it a convenient grab for someone that has broken into your vehicle. My gun never stays in my car when I am home.
