Mossberg Shockwave...

Received mine and shot it a few days ago. First impressions are good although I need a lot of practice with it. Heaviest load was some #4 buck. Can't imagine an #00 magnum load through it .

Tried it from the hip and as above in the Thunder Ranch video and shooting up high is a little awkward on my right wrist. With practice, I'll get better though. I shot some aquila 7 1/2 through it and it was like nothing at all (all I could find in aquila minis). I've got some Exotic Shorty #4 buck ordered (couldn't find the aquila) and looking forward to trying them out.

Overall? Cool gun that will be deployed bedside and for show when guests are over for dinner... :D

Pleased with my purchase!

The location of the safety is the reason for my choice. I have shot nothing but Remington shotguns and rifles since I was 10 years old. I bought two Mossberg shotguns, and the top safety drove me nuts. I sold them, and bought an 870 and 1100. I always instinctively feel behind the trigger guard for the safety, I will make certain it is there.

As others have mentioned, the fore end strap seems like it might be problematic. Is it riveted in place? Cuz if I had one of these, I'd like to tighten it up (although that would make it harder to insert my hand in the first place), or replace the fore end with one with a pronounced hand stop.

Actually, a 2 3/4", 27 pellet-count #4 load weighs about 559 gr. A 9 count #00 load weighs about 484, so you already shot heavier than 00 loads. I like 20 pellets of #1, for 810 gr.

It's screwed in place. Four screws. You can back them out and buff the holes down a bit. No worries.

3" #4 Buck is highly uncomfortable; 41 little sumaguns trying to break your wrist. I have not shot 2¾" and don't intend to. I use the Federal LE1321B (2¾" Low Recoil Flitecontrol #1B) and 158000 (3" 000 Buck)and the Winchester 3" #1 Buck. Super tight patterns out to 30+yards with the Flitecontrol, 000 patterns really well, 3" #1 maintains a good full pattern as distance increases and is available locally.

What load is giving you 20 #1 Buck? Sounds like a baby(2¾") magnum...share the good news!

Show and tell is about the best way for the word to get around that you have things to steal in your home. If YOU can't keep a secret, don't expect anyone else to. While your guests MAY be trusted, many of us know parents that have kids with drug problems and steal to support their habit. I don't get the shorty rounds??? If recoil & less of a payload is wanted, why not go to a smaller gauge?

Because people don't realize that the reduced recoil load of 00 or #1 is better and recoils slightly more. Those little shells recoil more than Win AA Low Noise Low Recoil 2¾". Winchester 2¾" #1 Buck is the way to go for the recoil sensitive. There's a good pattern and manageable recoil.
Going to a smaller gauge is not an option in these short firearms at this time. I'm surprised that other folks haven't gone this route. Remington screwed up and chased Mossberg. They should have come out with a Wingmaster 2¾ receiver that was pretty and light and slick. They'd have killed it. Nobody really needs 3" in these guns. I'd give it up in a heartbeat for a slick fast 870 Wingmaster (not the express trash).

What 14in configurations like the Shockwave are available in a smaller gauge absent requiring a tax stamp?

^^^^what he said. I don't know how realistic it is to expect a "family" of Shockwaves in different gauges. There is almost an infinite number of 12 gauge loads out there, many of which can serve for "serious social purposes" (in any 12 ga shotgun, for that matter). I know of only one 20 gauge buckshot load and one 20 gauge slug load.

Too, and more importantly, the entire Shockwave concept smacks of "one and done," given the legal territory it dances around, ATF letter or not.

Thanks for the clarification, even though my ownership of such a beast is just a day dream for the nonce.

It's bad news on the mini-mags, they've been discontinued.

Winchester Double-X 2 3/4" Magnum #1, 20 copper plated and buffered .30 caliber shot, #X12C1B.

I've been going through the stash trying to sell off low-priority stuff, but when I realized there were no more of these to be had I figured I better hold on to 'em. If I had to guess, I'd say they were cut because people looking for that kind of load for hunting were buying 3" shells. In the venerable Mossberg 500, going to 3" shells makes you lose a round in magazine capacity.

Speaking of Mossberg architecture, I believe they use the same receiver for their 20 ga. as they do the 12, so you could just swap in some used 20 ga. parts and keep the same gun. Don't know if that'll work on the 590 model though.

I can assure you that no one I show this to has any relations that would break into my home or steal my guns, I promise.. ;)

The plated 2¾"#1 from Winchester are done it seems. Darn. Plated is done for #1 all throughout Winchester and Remington. Federal loads it but I suspect that it's really #2 Buck from their 20 gauge loading...as it comes in closer to .28...
00 sucks for Turkey I'd like to see Flitecontrol plated #1 & #4 Buck make a come back. I have always liked plated shot because you could shoot and tell you'd hit if you were close to another hunter and it fell in front of them.
I'm not losing a shell with 15800 or 158000. I use a 2¾" 00 mag and then load four 3" and one in the pipe. I took the magazine spring retainer out and this became possible. You could also put a 2¼" Herters buckshot in the tube first and achieve this much easier. The 000 is difficult(tight) to get the fourth shell in but doable and it functions.
The reason the 2¾" mags are getting cut is there aren't that many 2¾" guns afield and the 3" and 3½" crowd are taking up the bandwidth. Still have 00 and #4B due to Home Defense and capacity concerns. Federal cut the #1 loading in 3½" and it was said to be the end all deer and turkey load. I would have liked to see a 000 loading.

OMG what an awful thread. Comparing my two worst companies made my head swim.

I would not own any new Remington even if it was given to me free. That includes firearms and especially ammo. An OLD 870 was excellent, but they haven't made a good one in years.

Every shotgun I own is a Mossberg. I must clarify that all are old and all are USA made. The current firearms they market are not up to the standards set in the past. The foreign junk they sell is ****. The last one I bought was back to the factory 4 times and was never fixed. The customer service reps don't speak English.

Rant over. Stick to S&W.

So Smith and Wesson is making slide action shotguns???? I must have missed that announcement.

Also, Mossberg says they are American made. I must have missed that change too.

Quick quiz... What do they call the mythical, cave-dwelling being depicted in folklore as either a giant or a dwarf, typically having a very ugly appearance?

False. Both Remington and Mossberg make their shotgun in the USA. Even Mossberg cheapo brand Maverick is made in Eagle Pass, Texas.

I'm still trying to figure out what that 'mythical, cave-dwelling being depicted in folklore as either a giant or a dwarf, typically having a very ugly appearance' is ... ;) That being said, mine has $140 towards it at the LGS awaiting my entitlement/SS check arriving next week. At risk of being chewed out for thread drift - has anyone seen or found a short scabbard for these little puppies? Mine will be moving around with me somewhat and I doan want to scee-ratch it up ...

Edited to add - I used that Googly thing and found a breachers scabbard on Amazon for $35 - it even has a few extra loops for shells. IF something were to happen in my humble abode, and BIG IF I were to have more than a few seconds to get ready, I'm thinking I would sling the Shockwave as a backup to my Clock which has a tac light on it ...

You might look at this:

Amazon.com : Voodoo Tactical Men's Breacher's Shotgun Scabbard, Coyote : Gun Slings : Sports & Outdoors

I have it. It fits well. The only thing I don't like is the single strap. That was easily fixed with the purchase of two backpack straps off the famous auction site for about $5. I can now actually carry it in my back like a pack if I chose to.

I'm having more fun with this thing.... I bet I've shot the Shockwave more in the past couple weeks than I've shot my Winchester Defender in the last couple years or more. Never been a shotgun guy, only had the one Winchester.

The Thunder Ranch technique has quickly become more natural than I thought it would and is now pretty darn fast too.

Best $389 I've spent on guns in a while. And it actually serves a purpose beyond holding down the safe.

Truck guns...
