Any of you guys have the 5” SRH Toklat in 454 Casull? I have been thinking about actively pursuing one of these and just want to hear you guys opinions. I really like the idea of being able to shoot 45’s out of it also, and would probably shoot and reload more 45 then the 454. But the option is there if I want it. This would mainly be used for white tails but hopefully will be taken on some hunting and hiking trips out west. So what say you what’s the good the bad and the ugly of this? All comment welcome.

I had a 7-1/2" SRH 454 & the throats were .455". Cast bullets leaded no matter what I tried. Ruger said to send it back & when they examined it they said they needed to replace the whole revolver (never got a straight answer as to why) !?

They sent the newest version of the same model. The replacement gun had the same oversized throats. I never took it out of the receiving FFL's gun shop. He sold it for me.

If you're just going to shoot jacketed bullets it will (mine did) shoot fine. If you like lead bullets it might be worth verifying the throats before you pay for it. I heard of others having the same issue with the 454s.

I have the short barrel Alaskan in .454/45 Colt and got it to shoot hot .45 Colt loads in a DA short barrel platform. I also have leading issue when shooting cast bullets. Even tried using .454 sized hard cast but they leaded even at moderate loads.
However I recently tried some of Missouri Bullets coated 325 gr. bullets and had little if any leading...what was there cleaned out easy.

If I was to buy a 454 Casull SRH and the cylinder throats were .455 I would be a happy camper . As cast bullets are supposed to be 1-2 thousandths larger than the groove diameter of the barrel . i wouldn't want the cylinder throats " down sizing " my cast bullets . Yes sir , cylinder throats sized .455 is perfect .
Barrel leading is usually caused by a problem within the barrel itself , if the cylinder throats are larger than the groove diameter of the barrel . Many times a tight spot , a " choke " where the barrel threads onto the frame is the culprit , or machine marks inside the barrel , a tight spot where they " roll stamped " the markings on the side of the barrel .
You don't have to take my word for any of this . Simply spend about $15 and buy Veral Smith's book , " Jacketed Performance with Cast Bullets " . His website is " LBT Molds " . He is a master mold maker and is considered " THE " authority on shooting cast from pistols , semi auto's and rifles . I hope this helps . Regards , Paul

Keep em coming I’m really digging this Toklat. I thought about the 7.5” SRH also. However I figured shooting under 75 yards I think the 5” would be better. And also easier to carry. With tax season coming up I’m really on the fence.
