My new retro KISS rifle!
I’ve been wanting a light wight AR 15 for awhile, so when I found this 2003 Colt 6520 at a LGS I jumped. Like I do often, I over paid but it’s only money...right??
I absolutely love the way this rifle handles, it shoulders nice & feels just right. Simplicity at its best. All I’m planning on adding is a nice sling.
Gun looks to have been carried more than shot & has a very nice factory trigger. I’m planning on letting this one be my trunk/back pack rifle. Haven’t had the chance to shoot it yet, but hope to over the weekend.
Has anyone else have any experience with the 6520?
Thanks for looking & please show off your KISS/SHTF set up!

I recently had this carbine built, 16" lightweight "Pencil" barrel, slick side
A-1 upper with no forward assist or shell deflector. Colt made a few of these carbines back in the day when they were making SP-1's, but not many, so used ones are pricey.
This one weighs 6.5 pounds, a delight to carry and shoot. No optics to bang around or add weight.

A couple years ago, when I was feeling very cautious about the condition of our government, State and National, I broke down and bought an AR.
I am a hand-gunner primarily, and have a couple of bolt action very accurate rifles for long range (Prairie Dog) shooting. I felt the potential need for this type of rifle, and bought a stock DPMS, put a Vortex 2-7 scope on it, bought 500 rounds of factory ammo and loaded up 500+ rounds of a similar load. My loads will shoot into 1 1/2" @ 100 yds, which I feel adequate. I stocked up with a dozen mags and it sits in the safe ready for if/when it may be needed. I don't particularly enjoy shooting it, I view it as a tool.

I don’t have a 6520 but do have the VERY early version of it, an SP-series Colt CAR15 - has the old, slow-twist barrel, no FA, and the crude rear sight typical of rifles on that era (must be adjusted with the tip of a loaded cartridge, or some such). I’ve had it for years and years. I’ve never had the slightest problem with it using either factory ammunition or my handloads. It shoots 52 grain HPs with BLC2 so accurately it’s almost like a varmint rifle. No .308 it is, but really a nifty little lightweight, compact .223. I’ve thought about buying a similar rifle with an 8- or 9-inch twist barrel but just can’t justify it.

I like them simple, but I'm no AR expert. The first one is right around 6 lbs, the second isn't far behind.

6520s are sweet. While the new, “tacti-cool” ARs have their purpose, and I have plenty of them, my go-to AR is an older A2 20” Bushmaster with a sling.

Here's my simple Colt lightweight made back during the 90s when
flash hiders and bayonet mounts were taboo. This pic illustrates what
can happen sometimes when you combine a high line of sight with a
basic unit construction chronograph.
