Winchester's new 350 Legend cartridge.
I'm surprise nobody has posted about this yet.
Winchester's new 350 Legend round was introduced this week at the Shot Show. Basically, its a straight wall .223 case with a .35 caliber bullet.
Its not a new idea as its already been compared to the old .351 Winchester Self Loading cartridge and the .357 Maximum.
Touted for higher energy, increased penetration and lower recoil than the .30-30, .300 Blackout or .223.
Winchester 350 legend
Guns.com Review
While intended to be a hunting cartridge, the AR fans are already wringing their hands and plotting away.
When I first saw it, the thought that hit my mind was it reminded me of the .30 Carbine. But the case is much too long for that. But I am thinking this would be perfect in a M1 type, straight stocked, light weight, semi-auto carbine. Perhaps the Mini-14?
For years new cartridges have come and gone. Honestly, I've met the vast majority of them with a ho-hum attitude.
But for some reason the 350 Legend has caught my eye. It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

This sounds like good news to me. Is the COAL able to fit in a standard AR-15 mag? And yes, it rings of 351 SL!

Guy at work was telling me it needs about .005” of taper to make it work in an autoloader. Brass is .223 brass before it starts getting necked. Seems the brass has been available for a while for wildcatters, and putting it in an AR is not new. He’s been after a rimless max for about a year and has read everything he can find on it. He wants a bolt gun to hunt in Ohio. Did he tell me it was .100 longer than a max case? He went on & on...he was stoked that it was going to be commercially available.

From what little I have read, this round is targeted at hunters in states that require certain types of cartridge cases for hunting big game. Some loads I seen published are pushing close on the heels of the 35 Remington, so it should be a good deer cartridge, and it will have some recoil I bet, at least more than a .223.

9mm Luger is 9x19, 38 Super is 9x23, 350 Winchester is 9x42 or 43, sounds like some Big Fun in a Black Plastic Package, and a 30 round mag.

Interesting but after using the 450 Bushmaster in a Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle this past year I don't think I'll be converted to a straight wall 35. If we want to step up over a .30-30, .300 Blackout or .223 then we might as well make it a big step. Will be interesting to see who chambers it in what platform though.

Sota like they reinvented the old 351 self loading cartridge. Not for me. The .223 case is not enough engine for a bullet larger than .22.

Much better powder and bullet selection around today versus when the 351 was around. And, if you already have 357 or 38 Super dies, won't these work for reloading? Put a 350 upper on my ar and I'm set up for deer hunting. Looks like a good home defense round in an ar platform, too. I won't be standing in line to get one, but it looks interesting to me.

If the lack of interest on this forum is representative of shooters generally, they really HAVE recreated the 351 Winchester. Or 401 Winchester, more likely.

Yep. Marketing hype will say it's the best thing since potato chips and good for everything up to Mastadons. Still bottom line is no matter what powder you stuff in that little .223 case behind a medium weight 30 to 35 caliber bullet. You ain't gettin much. Truth is the 7.62x39(bigger case=more powder capacity) will easily out perform it and the 30/30 will leave it in the dust.......Don't believe me? Check the ballistic tables.

It looks to me like the 357AR (Max-Rimless) people were missing around with a few years ago.

I would rather have seen an updated (or reborn) .401 WSL cartridge. Not nearly so well-known as the .351 WSL, and not many Winchester M1910 rifles were made, but its ballistics are similar to the .45-70 factory load. I think that, if updated a little, it would be the ideal big-bore caliber for an AR.

Well, I found the answer to one question and the AR guys ain't gonna like it. The 350 Legend will NOT work in standard 5.56 AR mags. Apparently there are some small ridges inside the mag at the cartridge neck that have to be removed in order for the straight walled case to fit and feed properly.
Check at about the 3:20 mark.
But still, a barrel and some mags is a very easy caliber change.

I got my .450BM Ruger from a shop in Michigan that deals in tons of these. I don't live there, but a rifle like that has a lot of uses even if the laws are less restrictive.
This is definitely for those markets as stated above. .450BM recoil is pretty sharp so this is a milder alternative.

I was interested when I first herd of 350 win. I thought it was going to be
a 35 cal version of 375 win. When I found out what it was totaly lost interest in it. It may sell some in states that limit deer guns to straight
cases. It will be a minimum cartridge for deer. The 357 & 351win are close
and aren't the best choice for deer. Since Win draws 223 brass it won't cost them much to put 350 on market. It's another ho hum to me.

Watch out for them to sell a bunch of rifles and then quit making ammo for them (.375 Win comes to mind first).

Calling the cartridge the “.350 LEGEND” and having the line: “THE AMERICAN LEGEND” as the tagline for it...
Can anyone else say “pretentious”?
Maybe I’m mistaken in that a “legend” should come AFTER people have used and respected the cartridge for a decent while?
