Smile Hi/High Standard Sentinel 22lr

Hi all,

Been searching "High" and low for one of those in a 2" to 4" configuration, and at least the R-103 version due to the return spring in the ejector rod. I'm here in FL and search local fun shops and local forums to no avail.

I am planning on going to the show next month in south FL and see if I can find that or the JC Higgens counterpart.

Anyways, what would be a fair price for a shooter grade and a fair price for 90%+ condition?

Thanks for looking and if any of you have had experience with or have one, PLEASE SHARE!

$300.00+ here in metro Atlanta. Nice guns, but not worth such big money in my opinion. However, you are in luck, as I saw four last week. One had a 5”-6” barrel and a scope mounted on it, another a 4” and the other two were snubbies. Holler at me if you want the shop’s numbers.

I think they are way over priced too. On the other had what are used 34s
going for? Twice that at least.

There's a shop here in the area that has two of the JC Higgins Model 88 for sale. I'm not sure what barrel length they are. The place is called Pinto Guns in Renton, if you want to give them a call.(425) 227-9280. I think they were asking $150 a piece for them.

Hi guys,

Picked up the Sentinel. Spoke with both parties, but the Higgins does not have the ejector rod return spring and they do not allow for an inspection period. "All Sales Final."

The Sentinel was worked with on price, plus a 3 day inspection period! I really appreciate both of you for letting me know about those revolvers!

I will post pics when I receive and also follow up with a range report. I'll be going this coming Wednesday.

Thanks and all the best, gents.

Glad you were able to get one of them at least. Yes, Pinto's has those Higgins pistols in a section of the store that they are sold as is. Things like a Hy Hunter 22 single shot is in that same case and a some H&R pistols too. There is a no inspection period for those guns in that case, which I had forgotten about.

Love to see a picture of the Sentinel once you have it.

One of the snubbies I owned was a round butt with two piece stocks with side mounted grip screws; as opposed to the one piece stocks with the single screw through the butt of the frame.

That gun had a crudely made pair of big wood stocks with it, which I may still have back at home. You are welcome to them if I can find them and they will work on the gun you bought.

it's been maybe 20 years, but I had a Sentenal MK4, .22 with a 3" barrel and small smooth grips. Was a great shooter, more than adequate for accuracy for weight and barrel length. Quite a nice piece and great walking around/woods revolver. Unfortunately bought a new rifle and needed a new scoope for it so it went in trade. I'd buy another just like it again.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the replies and messages. I was able to pick up the Sentinel TODAY! I guess it wasn't sent out from GA until yesterday.

The revolver's condition was much worse than expected cosmetically, but it did lock up TIGHT and was in time as far as I could tell. Rifling is great, cylinders were clean and forcing cone is very good as well. Trigger pull was also very smooth and clean in DA and very crisp in SA.

Had several light rust areas all over the barrel and cylinder that I took out with ballistol and 0000 steel wool. Disassembled revolver completely (save for the hammer and intricate little lower half areas) and detail cleaned all pieces. I chore boy'd the barrel with a smaller .22 cal brush as well as the cylinders.

The big problem is this...............when taking out the plunger to remove the cylinder assembly from the frame, I DROPPED THE CYLINDER ASSEMBLY ON THE GROUND! I was upset with myself big time. It did not land on carpet as my whole house has tile flooring. While that is good for the house, it was definitely NOT good for the cylinder!

While reassembling the revolver, I noticed that the ejector rod no longer was springing back and forth and looked severely bent. I am taking it to the local gunsmith tomorrow to have him look it over and either fix it or order parts for it to fix it.

By the way, altogether price for the revolver with shipping and ffl fees came out to $277.60

Thanks gents

Awww, man! I hate when dropping things like that happens. So sorry to hear about that. Let's hope the gunsmith can fix the problem for you and minimal cost. Good luck.

The Hi Standard Sentinel was a favorite of Chic Gaylord so it couldn't
be too bad.

A 6" Sentinel Deluxe was my first personally-owned handgun -- still have it. It's never been a tackdriver, but I have sure punctured a lot of cans, squirrels and rabbits with it along the way.

Well, I decided to pick up the J.C. Higgins Model 88 from the place in Renton that I told crh1943 about. It seems to be almost unfired and yes, it doesn't have the ejector rod return spring, and neither did the other one that was at the store (they also had a 6" version). I'm not sure any Higgins models had that since they stopped being made in 1963 and I don't know when High Standard added the ejector rod return spring.

Anyway, here's a picture of it below. $130 out the door !

Default Update

Hello all,

Finally have an update! Have been contacting my gunsmith on and off over the last 6 months. I was on Numrich, found the ejector rod and sent him the link. He has ordered the part and after he receives it, should be able to fix it up and get it back to me. The ejector rod on the one I bought had a bend in it, and after I dropped it it was "enhanced".

He says it is such a pain to work on due to the rod having a pin staked through it as well as it having to be over (or maybe under?) a sheath. He literally said he didn't want to work on it!!! BTW, I did call other smith's in the area and they said to leave it with my guy because he is one of the best there is. After I get it back from him, I don't know if I'll be doing more business with him due to the fact of the procrastination with my Sentinel.

Now that FL has a pending hurricane, I probably won't get it back for another month or so. I've already waited over 6 months so no big deal!!!
