I’m asking because I finally got one. I have other HK delayed rollers and am very familiar with them in and out, but not the P9S.

I’m kinda confused with the decock/cocking lever. It’s like my Sauer & Sons 38H but not.

I like how easy it it switching from the weighted target top end to the shorter combat one, but I haven’t shot either of them yet.

I tried logging in at HKPro but I guess it’s been too long and I don’t want to “rejoin” there and start all over.

I have a 9mm one. I had a .45 many years ago, but sold it.

It's the most accurate pistol I own. I had a P7M8, and that was a very accurate pistol as many will attest to, but my P9S beat it. The target ones will hold their own against Sig P210's.

Mags aren't cheap, but you can use P38 mags in it without any mods to gun or mag. The slide hold open won't work, and you only get 8 rounds, but they function fine and are cheaper than factory H&K.

The cocking lever isn't really intuitive IMO. The cocking part is simple enough, but getting it into DA mode is not well thought out. It seems like an ND waiting to happen.

I've found it to be a very enjoyable gun to shoot. It has very low felt recoil. The .45 was the softest shooting .45 I've tried.

Kinda odd gun, but it's a snapshot in time of it's era. They do shoot great though.

It has been a long time since I used one, but the left sided lever does a few things.

If the slide is forward but the hammer is not cocked (DA trigger mode) fully pushing the lever down cocks it; this takes a bit of effort. If the hammer is cocked, pushing the lever down then pulling the trigger safely decocks it...probably best to practice this with an empty gun first. Finally, with the slide back a short lever movement drops the slide into battery, and a long one does that and cocks the hammer.

A complex manual-of-arms today and pretty radical for the 1970s. Enjoy!

I had owned a P9S for many years and it was a well made gun with excellent mechanical accuracy. Operating the safety decocker and cocking lever was so awkward that the BGS had sold the HK P9S after a couple of accidental discharges and its service time was rather short. The DA trigger is extremely long and the trigger stop on the sports versions will not work for both SA and DA. HK Used polymer buffers, polygonal rifling and a trail blazing polymer triggerguard.

It is recommended by H&K to replace the polyurethane buffer every 5,000 rounds.

That decocking procedure is, umm, novel.

I'm guessing that roller delayed pistols went away on cost/complexity grounds. I have CZ 52 in bits in a box, I can attest that taking down the slide is quite an exercise.

LVSteve, get that CZ vz52 back together. I got mine, full rig for $89.95 “back then” when I had a FFL.. It was packed and wrapped in cosmoline so I HAD to learn how to disassemble/assemble it right away. Not too bad and if I could do it ANYBODY can.

Does anyone know the different P9S offerings? I was looking for and finally got a 9mm Sports Group III I think. But searching I found other SG III’s that didn’t come with a complete combat length top end.

4T5GUY, You sure have a nice one there! I never had one with the weighted barrel, but did have several standard and target .45 and 9s. Most recently had a 9MM Target model, and still have a SAO P9 that I purchased 20+ years ago when a LGS was liquidating a collection. Interesting guns.

Mine is one on the low end of the Totem Pole . . . Just one top end came with mine

This one is a 45ACP.

I had always hoped to fall into a threaded barrel for it. I bet it would make one great suppressed pistol.

Like most fixed barrel German Pistols, mine is very accurate as well

I added the Nills grips with the HK logo a few years ago, I think it makes the gun look good.

Make sure the recoil buffer has not turned into goop - I became aware of this after the buffer housing broke on my P9S .45 Target. At the time I had to modify a 9mm housing until I could source the correct part.

A friend had the 9 mm model with the weighted barrel. It was (and remains) the most accurate pistol I have ever fired.
