I have a line on one of these, asking price $499, almost certainly available for a good bit less. I'm always on the lookout for something different but not ****, so wondering the B&B's thoughts on this particular model.

Thanks for any info.

p.s. When I submitted this post, they censored "****."

p.p.s. They did it again. Didn't know that was one of the words you can't say online.

Might want go over to the 191* version of this forum and ask there . Personally I have passed on a number of DAO pistol including a nice 45 version of the CDEMKII and since I not a collector and that handguns a lard but for carry I would pass on this one to . Rather have a kahr tp40 over this one . My dealer has a like new s&w 4046 for 325 do to the trigger function type and I like the S&W trigger design far better than colts .

Turns out they sold it 2 days ago, i.e., the last day I looked at it in the gun case. They sold it for the asking price of $499. Better them than me. I might have considered $400 OTD but I'll just consider that money earned.

For an all steel, out of production handgun made by Colt and with the magical, economy-lifting prancing pony?! $500 is a steal.

Walking away from a great deal to attempt to do research is what the beginners do while the hawks drive home all smiles with their new guns! :D

I have regretted passing on a few things, but not this one. Whoever it was paid close to $550 OTD (that pesky sales tax) and I hope they enjoy it.

On the other hand, the 29-3 that I picked up last month for $600, that one I probably would have regretted, so picked it up on the spot. Like with that Double Eagle, more than once before, as soon as I show the slightest interest in a gun, if I don't buy it, it's usually sold within 2 days of my eyeballing it. No way to ever know, but I suspect that if I had gone back for the 29 in two days, it would have been gone.

The Colt Double Eagle in the .40S&W caliber is considered a scarce one to some collectors. The most common one is in 45ACP. What's ironic is that the most rarest is in one of the most common calibers of the world; 9mm. Colt made very few of those.

I owned one in .45 acp back about the time they first came out. It shot as reliably and accurately as your average 1911. I didn't think the trigger pull was that bad. I still liked my 1911's, so it sat in the safe until someone made me an offer for it.

Today, just about anything with a "pony" on it brings $, and I don't think you would be over paying at $499.00.

I have one in 10mm. Bought it unfired in mid 90s. Actually a comfortable shooter with it's fat grip and all steel construction. It's still almost new.

I have a CDE 45 ACP in commander size. I bought it used/unfired from a friend who had purchased it new. Two days after buying it the transmission went out in his truck and he needed $300 for the repair.

Never a problem with my CDE. I used it as a carry gun before Tennessee had their current HCP program. Back then you were made a "Special Deputy" and were only legal to carry in the county where your "Special Deputy" permit and badge were issued from. If you wanted to carry a semi auto it had to be manufactured by Colt, Ruger or S&W in 9 mm Para, 40 S&W or 45 ACP in traditional DA or DAO. If you wanted to carry a revolver, same manufacturers and only 38 Special or 357 Magnum. You also had to qualify annually. A close guestimate would be about 10K rounds through mine. Still have the original shipping outer box, card stock sleeve, plastic case, spare magazine and sealed booklets.

You asked for opinions, and I'm afraid this isn't one I'd ever give unless asked, for fear of hurting someone's feelings. I was managing a gun store when they first came out, and I wouldn't have a Double Eagle of any sort in my house for fear that it would somehow infect all the working handguns I've labored so hard to acquire over the decades. :o
