Default The Famous JM inspection mark??

Can someone post a photo of the Marlin "JM" stamp? I looked at a nice Marlin 30-30 today and saw a mark, but not sure it was the mark that everyone talks about.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

It is a JM inside a circle, can be on either side of the barrel right in front of the receiver, and have seen some upside down.

I have a 1969 Marlin 1894 saddle ring, by serial number and it has no visable JM stamp. I have been advised that I could be under the forend but I don't care enough to go to the trouble to find out. Occasional you can run into one that didn't get stamped. I bought a new 39 barrel from Marlin in 70s and its stamped. So it's not a case of replacement barrel not being stamped. I had a guy that wanted it real bad tell me it was a shame it wasn't stamped or he would have gave me $500 for it. I still have it and not ashamed of asking $800 for it.

Thank you so much, just what I needed. Unfortunately, it's not the mark I saw. I might go back and look again.

Have a blessed day,

It means that it is a Marlin made barrel, which assures an older rifle, and purportedly, a better quality rifle. Later barrels were made by Remington, after the purchase in 2007. . .

The stamp is on the barrel at the receiver end. If I recalled the one on my M39 is on the left side.

That's where it is on my 1984CS, right up against the receiver on the left side. Looks just like the pic previously posted.

The "JM" stamping can vary slightly from the pic armorer951 posted on his gun. The JM stamp I posted is on a later, pre-Remington SS 1894 in .44 magnum.

I rebarreled my Sears model 45 with an older Marlin 3000 barrel.
All original Marlin but no stamps.

The JM mark varied through the years as the die(s) were changed.
The initials were for John Marlin.

The mark was applied in the Range after Proof (1rd), Function (5rds) and Targeting (3rds) of the firearm.

Orig the mark was hand stamped with a single cut die stamp and hammer.
Late 60's the switch to a die stamp inserted into a small hand held pneumatic hammergun made punching the cart full (30 on a cart) of guns a quick operation after they came from the Targeting shooters (3 rds for Targeting.

One Range guy ran a somewhat oily patch down and back out of each bore quickly as another banged the Proof mark onto each gun as they sat in the cart.

Since the above was always done on completely finished and assembled firearms, the mark should be visible above the wood line.
It's always a possibility a gun was missed getting a Proof mark. It was a Factory atmosphere just like any other. Hectic, loud, keep things moving..

Guns right after that visit to the Range were wheeled off to the packing and shipping dept.
The JM Proof mark was also supposed to be a mark of final inspection in the Range. No one looked over each gun individually as far as I saw.
A glaring fault got caught, maybe,, but small things,,not a chance.
Setting those a side meant that the guy in the range was dumping on the Final Assembler's daily rate. You didn't do that.
Same as the Final Assembler didn't nitpick on Sub Assemblys for his/her work done up by one of the Sub-Assemblers.
Piece Work,,,We all just want to get along
I don't know that many/any were pulled from the line over at Packing for defects seen in fit or finish, but it's certainly possible.
I doubt many did though.

When things got hectic and the Range got behind,, racks of guns were wheeled in, proof marked and wheeled right back out again to Ship&Packing, Never seeing a Proof, Function or Targeting round.
Get'er Done...American Mfg'g at it's Best.

The Proofmark should be punched Thru the Blue (or Plating),,not underneath it if original.
That's true for any firearms mfg'r.

Parts & Service Dept mailorder replacement bbls may have proof mark on the under side of the bbl or an off side flat if an octagon.
Seems like they had a slightly different Proof mark than the standard JM on an Oval,,maybe not. Winchester used a different proof mark for their replacement bbls sent outside the factory.
I think Marlin stopped the practice of mail-order replacement bbl quite some time ago.

Most all of any older replacement parts Marlin had as of the mid 70's they sold off to Numrich.
Numrich sold many of them directly to other dealers/collectors, so they never saw the general market. The rest started to show up in their regular Shotgun News and other ads but not till the early 80's IIRC.
They had a warehouse full of stuff, but the word given to the general public after about 1972 when ever someone would send an older classic MArlin or LCS in was 'We have no parts available' and they'd send it back.

This is the proof mark used on Marlin’s after Remington bought them out.

I prefer earlier Marlins, made before they added the cross bolt safety.

Turns out it is a JM marked model 336, the "J" is clear and shaped correctly and the "M" can be made out. Needs a rear sight blade, manufactured 1977. $350.00 OTD

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Hope you got on that like white on rice!

I've hunted with a Uncles 336 back in the mid 60s. Was in .35 Rem though, not .30-30. Sweet rifle, but no luck for me.

The crossbolt safety delete kit is easily installed for less than $25.00 and gets rid of that hideous looking safety on both the JM and Remington made Marlins. Here is a picture of my 2018 model 336 Compact with the safety delete kit installed.

I have a 39A .22, Dxxxx serial no. Do the .22s have that stamp? I can't find one on mine. I believe D was made in 1947.

BTW Fellas, BEWARE of FAKE JM proof markings! I have encountered a couple on sites that sell use Marlin's to try and fool potential buyers. They usually look pretty phony and are not the correct fonts, quality or size. If it isn't the right marking - walk !

What about the sticker that says inspected by Phil B
He must be their only inspector ever... I have never seen one with another name

If you can determine that it was made prior to 2007, via serial number, then you have a JM Marlin, even if it missed the JM proof mark.
