Okay am I crazy? I have always been a revolver guy. Just got to hold a Walther PPQ Q5 steel frame today and fell in love with it. I don't even shoot competition, and here I am thinking, "well, hey it would make a great home defense gun." Seriously I must be out of mind because I am coming up with all kinds of reasons for me to put down $1400 on it. What an amazing piece of engineering. Any of you guys own one?

I own a P99AS and it’s been very reliable and is a good gun. Put a Streamlight on it and it would be a great home defense gun, much better than a revolver.

About 7 years ago dad bought a PPQ regular 9mm. the spring was so stiff his 79 year old arms couldn't rack the slide. I am 23 years younger and had trouble with it. At the time we couldn't find anyone willing to work on it in Central Ohio. Dad has since past, and the guns disappeared to non relatives.(mumbled expletives!)

Anything that will reliably throw bullets of an acceptable power level and that you can shoot well is a perfectly good defense gun (within reason). An extremely light trigger (below factor specs) can possibly get you some legal trouble depending on how much the local cops and local prosecutors like or dislike gun owners. Also, if you live in a place where you can legally own fully automatic weapons I don't think I would make it my first choice to whip out your Ingram and stitch a guy coming thru your patio slider. Politics does matter. It shouldn't, but it does. Higher ammunition capacity unfortunately in this day and age is a desirable characteristic in a home defense weapon. The bad guys often come in numbers, and often come armed. I have NEVER read an after action report where anyone left standing said afterwords, "Damn, I wish I had been carrying less ammo on me."

The PPQ SF would make a good home defense weapon.

The weight of the thing has more advantages than disadvantages in a home defense setting.

It's easy to shoot accurately and quickly. The weight of the things soaks up recoil. Even if you are shooting one handed it is easy to keep on target.

The trigger is light but not that light. It's not a 1911 or 952 or something like that. It's been reported the SF version trigger is actually slightly heavier than the stock plastic PPQ trigger. Why would Walther do that? Beats me but it seems to be the case.

I'm not sure about night sight availability for the SF version if that is important to you. There may be something out there that fits but I just dont know.

It's a good gun. A little spendy. You are paying for the German labor that goes into the gun.

If it appeals to you and you can pay the freight, I doubt you will be disappointed.

Looks a little bit like the wrong choice just due to the dollars alone but to each his own. I keep a Beretta 92 around so I get the concept of high capacity for home defense!

If you’re going to shoot it a lot, go for it.

I think a better bet, if you want to be srsbzness about home defense guns, is something you’d actually carry 24/7, but most people aren’t there.
