Anybody here up on Brownings??

I just obtained what I believe to be a very early SA-22 made by Miroku for Browning. (It included the box, unfortunately not matching)
I don’t plan ever owning another Browning, so I don’t feel like paying the $ to join their website/forum….. Anyway, my questions are as follows:

Rifle serial number list for the Mirouku SA22’s is as shown..

My SA22’s serial is as follows:

As you can see, it doesn’t quite follow the printed format. Is it the 266th gun made in 1973 or what? If so, it is quite early. If not, what is the translation? (I have no idea about the double struck “7”.)

Next comes the box… It appears to be an excess Belgian box that has been overstamped with “Japan”. (I can understand using surplus boxes early on in production.) What I can’t figure out is the serial number shown before the “T”?

If the numbers were supposed to start over at 1000 each year, Miroku sure made a lot if .22 LR’s in 1974…..

Does it say on the steel that it was made in Japan?
Chart on Proofhouse shows your sn would be 1957.

Their example (1000T47) doesn't match their text. As a result, I would guess that yours is the 25637th (26637 - 1000) gun made in 1973.

_____26637______T_____________37
**sequence** **LR** ** Year (reversed)**

They stamped the year code backwards on a number of guns. Your gun dates to 1973.

The box dates to 1974 and has a different serial number, so I'd say the box was added later or inadvertently paired by the original dealer.

That was my feeling also.

I can't get my head around that they made 25,000 plus in 1973 and then another 83,000 plus in 1974......

Sounds about right. These were sold all over the world and were quite popular.

According to Matt Eastman's book Browning - Sporting Arms of Distinction, FN made 478,289 of these by 1966 and only 249,000 were for the US. He also lists total production by year from 1956 to 1973. According to his info (take it with a grain of salt), 8,975 were produced in 1972 and 56,000 were produced in 1973. It explains why I saw well over a dozen at the last MAAC show, including several transitional GR II's.

Interesting!!

Those numbers make sense in that 1972 was the last year they were made in Belgium and then the production switched tp Japan.

All I can say is that they appear to have held their value quite well.

I basically traded a Ruger 10/22 (one of the new ones, takedown with a bull barrel for the one I have.) I've wanted one of these little Brownings for some time and just didn't want to pay the freight for one. This one is as about as close to unfired as you can get.

(It's not going to stay that way.....)

SA-22 Date Codes

This link to Browning's web site provides codes from 1914 through 1999.

This thread got me curious to find out when mine was made because I couldn't remember when I bought it. It turns out mine S# 01640NY146 was made in 1992. I bought it new and it's one of my favorite .22's. :)
