Default My hunting rifles...for the battle rifle fans

Now, I want to start by saying that I have Blaser, Browning, and Mauser rifles that I bought specifically for hunting that cost a heck of a lot more than these did. But I just never got that ‘connection’ or confidence with them. I guess I’m weird, but for me these guys deliver solid accuracy and a natural feeling that I haven’t found with anything else. I’m that crazy guy that prefers to hunt with an old battle rifle. From CENTURY of all places!

I’ve hunted with my AK for 10 years at an average of about three whitetail a year. The C308 is a new acquisition for longer shots. Here in the dense brush of the southeast, 150 yard shots are about the max.

GP WASR 10/63 7.62x39mm

CETME C308 .308 Win.

The WASR is a hunting veteran, been flawless in every regard and excellent accuracy out of the box. The C308 is new to the ring and took a little tinkering to get it running right but she’s there now. I’d still say quality is hit or miss, but I got lucky with mine.

100 yard grouping with the CETME using the less than ideal bench setup above. The WASR is about the same. Past 150 yards the AK will open up but the C308 stays tight.

Not a record season this year, but the AK did put three in my freezer, including this six point.

Anybody else like hunting with battle rifles, or am I just that weird?

While I know you are not the only person to hunt big game with a battle rifle, you a re only the second I have run across. My older brother’s hunting buddy used an old Enfield with a aperture sight for years until his eyes started going bad and he could to see the sight picture well enough anymore. He harvested a lot of deer with that old rifle.
Myself, I am a bolt action person. My rifle today, which has not seen the field in 2 years is a Kimber Custom Select Stainless in 308.
Light and easy to carry and very accurate for 3 semi rapidly fired shots. Then the thin barrel heats up and rounds start to walk a tad. Never bothered me as I cannot ever remember needing 3 shots to anchor an animal.

The AK is probably the best battle rifle ever made. Good choice!

Personally, I like typical bolt guns for hunting but if I am chasing feral hogs I am totally happy to use one of these:

I know that AKs are great rifles but I never cottoned up to one of them. I loved the M1A but it was just too cumbersome to hunt with. Besides, except for hogs you have to use smaller magazines than 20 or 30 rounders so it's just easier to carry my 4 shot bolt guns in the deer woods.

Thanks guys! Here, mag limits aren’t a concern but for sporting purposes, the AK has a five round mag (pictured) and the CETME does, also. For sighting purposes I just used the 20 rounder. Predator and feral hog hunting aside, I prefer not to use the large capacity magazines.

One more pic of the AK, honestly I think for short range whitetail hunting it’s pretty hard to beat. Plus, liberals have a REALLY hard time trying to tell me how useless my ‘assault’ rifle is.

I use ‘em and glad to find out I’m not the only oddball out there. I have used the M1 Garand and M1A for years, then started using the M4 in 5.56 for mule deer a couple years ago. All have worked well. I took this antelope with an M1A way more years ago than I care to think about.

Default I live in the SE......

....and I've thought how nice of a hunting rifle my SKS would be. Big enough caliber (6mm is minimum here) and plenty enough range for thick woodlands.

I hunted a season with a PTR-91 18" barrel standard model. Main issues were the aluminum handguard that drew heat out of my hand (gloves needed) and, if you did need to work the action, it was loud. No riding the bolt home on a HK roller-locker.

Back in the '90s, the "SKS hunter" became a term of derision in WA and probably other places. A 10-shot semi that mimicked a .30-30 for $75 got a lot of people hunting that had no business being out there. Lots of incidents of "recon by fire" i.e. shooting at movement, and hunters using FMJ which led to wounded animals that were never recovered. This and other issues led to the Hunter Safety requirement in WA which, while a pain for people already responsible with firearms, has proved to be a good program.

Have been hunting deer since 1983. Have used 03-A3, K-98 and M-1 Garand rifles throughout the years. Have used a Colt Hbar Match Target for hog hunting. Never had a single issue at all. My rifles have always worked extremely well with issue iron sights. Have now had to start using a scope due to vision problems. Have a Remington 03-A4 replica w/ a nice little Weaver 2.5 on top. It shoots MOA. And it is just tremendously effective on deer, etc. Have a scout type scope mount and a 2X Nikon scope that I plan on mounting on one of my M-1 Garand rifles. Even w/ my less than perfect vision, these rifles hold well inside the 9 ring of a SR-1 target. I figure with the scope, on target results should be better, about like when my vision was better ... say 2.0 inches. Looking forward to it (Pun definitely intended!). Sincerely. bruce.

I first hunted somewhere where a rifle was allowed in the early 80’s. I used my IH M1 Garand and killed my first deer with it. I quit hunting several years ago but the last few times I went I carried my .50-70 Trapdoor.

I always take out my Arisaka a few days every deer season. I took a coyote with it once, hope to fill a deer tag with it some day. But I will tell you this...it's always a big hit with the game warden if they check me out while I'm carrying it.

While I will always defend your right to own an AK, AR, etc. and even hunt with one....... TO ME a Hunting Rifle is a Winchester M70, Remington M700, and similar. Just my particular likes - and certainly NOT criticizing anyone for using something else.

I've hunted with an 1898 Krag, an 03-A3 Springfield and am about to install a peep sight on an 1891 Argentine Mauser. My wife used to use a 6.5mm Arisaka. Battle rifles have been the progenitors of sporting rifles for at least the past century and a half. They may not look as elegant, but they do the job.

Right now, a dummy. I’ve got this:

Pro Series 47 Po'Boy Suppressor | black-aces-tactical

But I’m waiting for the paperwork to clear. The dummy is helping me get used to the difference in the way it handles in the field as well as the change in point of aim.

The can is the latest addition, my daughter has just started going with me on hunts. No live fire yet, just showing her the ropes. But, her hearing is a lot more valuable than mine.

I’d love to do the same with the CETME, but the brake is more or less permanently attached and the roller lock is pretty dependent on constant pressures. Sure makes quite the boom!

Not to offend anyone but I find carrying a AK or AR in the woods difficult, the limbs grabbing at all the hangy down stuff on the rifle. I like the 7.62X39 round for hunting But I like the feel of my carbine length Mini 30. It's a good deer rifle, hogs and varmint . I have a friend that hunts with a M1,30 carbine, he likes it because of the weight, and the peep sights. My best friend hunts with a sportized and tuned M1 grand,

It does catch on things. In particular, I usually have to remove the sling once I’m in the stand/blind because it’s very noisy and catches on everything. I refuse to use anything other than the original leather, though.

As far as hunting with battle rifles, I know a guy who likes to buy antique furniture and bought a lamp at a flea market made out of a Springfield 45/70 Trapdoor carbine for 75$. He took the lampshade off and made it back into a rifle and gets a deer every year with it. Whats cool is, while antique shopping he found a Civil war era reloading tool and bullet mold and reloads his own ammo even making his own black powder. I've shot the gun and it's not too hard to hit a bucket at 100 yards off hand.

Never got in to hunting myself, but the family deer gun was an M1 Carbine. My Grandparents, father, aunt, and now my aunt's kids, and grandkids have all used, or still use it.
