I put this information in the gun leather forum, but nobody
read it, so I thought I would share it here.

I was looking at Hunter's fit chart and noticed that their SAA
4.75" holster is a size 40, but a Peacemaker 4.75" holster is
size 45. I have always thought SAA and Peacemaker are one
and the same. So, I asked Hunter.

I got an explanation from Kyle Taylor, Director of Operations
at Hunter.

The SAA has slightly larger front post depending on the generation.

1st and 2nd generation SAAs have slightly tapered barrels.

SAA trigger plate is slightly thicker than on the Peacemaker.

SAA has a smaller tab on the ejection rod, allowing the holster
to be slimmer.

Everyone makes a version of the SAA, so we (Hunter) tailored
our holster to fit the majority of them.

I never knew there was a difference in SAA and Peacemaker.
I thought perhaps some of you never knew either. So now
we know.

News to me! All my SAA's (First, second and third models), as well as my Bisleys fit in the same holsters. Vaquero and Blackhawk holsters were a little loose.

Colt made a .22 they called the Peacemaker.

Colt made a .22 they called the Peacemaker.

But notice in the text that they describe it as a .22 caliber version of the famous Colt's .45 caliber "Peacemaker".

That indicates Colt did not limit the moniker to that variant. I could imagine small dimensional differences based on caliber, and the gun was made in a lot of them.

But this thread is the first I've ever heard of that relating to the Peacemaker name and supposedly affecting holster fit.

The 1873 Colt Single Action Army is known by the nickname "Peacemaker"

It sounds like they are using one term for the 1st and 2nd Generation Colts and a different term for the 3rd Generation Colts in order to provide a better holster fit

The Hunter catalog lists the barrel lengths for the peacemaker as 4 3/4, 6, and 7 1/2. The SAA barrel lengths are listed as 4 3/4, 5 1/2 and 7 1/2. The Colt .22 Peacemaker came in 4 3/4, 6, and 7 1/2. I believe the #45 holster is for the .22 and the #40 holster is for the SAA. I can’t believe there would be a hairs worth of difference from one generation Colt to another.

Now that makes sense. The listed barrel lengths are enough of a clue that this seems to be the logical explanation.

The Hunter people are assuming a lot if they think people are so familiar with Peacemaker meaning the .22 that it’s not mentioned. Seriously, if “experts” like us aren’t even sure ... ;)

“Peacemaker” is one of a bunch of names for the SAA but I think the smaller frame .22 mentioned above is the first official use of the term by Colt on a specific model of gun.

This is correct. The Colt Single Action Army (SAA) is a centerfire revolver (also the .44-40 Frontier Six Shooter). It is sometimes called a Peacemaker as a nickname but that is not an official Colt name.

The Colt Peacemaker (and New Frontier .22) is a .22 rimfire revolver as shown in the ad pictured above, and is a smaller frame size.

So to answer the original poster's question, "No, Colt's Peacemakers are not SAAs."

....

It appears that Kyle needs to become better acquainted with his own product line.

I agree; Kyle is mistaken. No big surprise, since some S&W customer service people aren’t well versed on their past products. For a lot of people, a job is just a job. It doesn’t necessarily represent their passions. Kyle may do a fine job as Director of Operations, but he’s obviously not well versed on a broad range of firearms.

We recently discussed this same topic here:
UPDATE OF HUNTER SIZE CHART!

Look at the listed guns for the size 40 and 45 in the Hunter chart. Among others, the size 40 fits a Colt SAA and various Ruger Blackhawk’s. Those are all full size guns. Size 45 is listed for the various scaled down .22’s (Frontier Scout, New Frontier .22 and Peacemaker), as well as the Ruger Single Sixes. They don’t have it listed, but the size 45 will also fit the later Frontier Scout 62.

Looking through the Hunter Holster chart in a 1967 Shooters Bible, they list the #45 holster for the 4 3/4" barreled Colt Frontier Scout and the #40 holster for the 4 3/4" barreled Colt SAA.
I had mistakenly reversed the holster style numbers on my post above, since corrected.
