I know someone who is selling a Black Diamond Trap 12 gauge. 30" barrel with solid rib, stock cut for an old Jostam's recoil pad which is not an issue for me. Blue and deluxe wood are both original finish and excellent condition. marked Trap under the serial number which is at about 461XXX. no mechanical issues and tight at the takedown. When was it made and what would be a fair offering price?? Thanks for the help!

If you really like it,,the price is ,,well you know.

The pad hurts the value if you ever go to sell it. Of course we never sell anything we ever buy for our own amusement!
But that's the first thing any Winchester person or anyone looking to buy it and turn it around will dump on.

Win M12's and Trap guns in general are not the most sought after shotguns out there. We may like them, but the market is soft as pointed out.

All that said, if you really want one for yourself as a shooter and it's a solid original finish, good mechanics, ect,,you should be able to buy that one for the range that oldK22 suggests IMO.

These are beautiful guns but monetary appreciation for them when it's time to get the wallet out is unfortunately left to a dwindling few it seems.

The auction sites are loaded with M12's and other classic shotguns that go begging for owners most times.

although the black diamond trap is the epitome of these guns the M12 market is SUPER soft nationally.
old guys selling or passing away, 30 year olds dont want them, as no choke tubes and no 3" in most field guns.
a visit to a cabelas will usually yield a rack of them.
some stores are shortening the barrels on the most worn field guns in order to have some riot guns to sell lately.
sad,but true.
they are wonderful guns... however.

Pumps are not the best trap guns although the model 12 was the Cadillac of pumps. It's almost impossible to shoot doubles and be competitive with a pump. Autoloaders and O/U's with tubes have taken over the sport.

Of course if you just like the shotgun and it fits well, $1000 would be my top dollar, but even there I would have second thoughts about as resale will be tough. Think about it like a sxs. Not many people want those these days. I had several high end sxs shotguns a few years ago when I decided to sell them all. I was able to sell a few but it took a long time. I think I still have one that I was never able to sell. I don't like the idea of giving nice old shotguns away so it just sets in my safe.

$1400 is way to high. I would say close to double. Gun should go $700-800 range. M12 market is getting softer all the time. It’s a very nice high condition shooter not collector gun. Lately everyone puts crazy price on stuff and throws it out there. It doesn’t cost them anything and they might get a bite. There are good deals and killer deals. Neither one lasts long before they are gobbled up.

Lots of model 12 bargains out there. This one is aftermarket engraved and silver inlaid, 28 inch vent rib Briely choke tubbed barrel, factory trap wood. I’m in it for less than $800.

Wow a real beauty ya got there! The fancy figured walnut stock alone should make it sell alone. Wonder what the price of a beautiful piece of wood like that would be today. Fanciest I have for Trap is my 1100 TB Rem. I bought back in 80 new for $330. Thanks for sharing your gem with us.

And hunters want a gun that can be used with steel shot for waterfowl.

That is a problem for selling an old Model 97 or Model 12. The barrel steel is unsuited for using steel shot. Several years ago I tried to sell a very good condition Model 97, no takers as everyone I offered to said the same thing "I don't want it, it can't use steel shot". Ended up selling it to some guy who was going to cut the barrel for use in CAS.

Regarding use for trap and skeet, I shot both with pump guns for years with no difficulty. Doubles are not difficult, just takes a little practice. Most trap shooters never shoot doubles. Sporting Clays are different.

They'll do fine with steel shot of recent mfg.
Stick to shot size no larger than the # sizes and a choke no tighter than IC.

Thin wall thickness at the muzzle is also something to stay away from if using steel shot loads. That goes along with the choke issue and the steels inability to get thru the tighter choked bbl easily w/o causing a bulge or worse a split muzzle.
M12's are plenty thick .

Unfortunately Mod 12's have not held up in value. The people who appreciated them are mostly older and dying off. The younger shooters don't want pump guns, except the sawed off ones for home defense. I bought a very nice Lightweight Cyl bore Mod 12 a couple years ago which is a great bird and skeet gun for $400.
