Interestingly enough, this Series 1991 Colt (made in 2012) in 9mm showed up in a local gunshop not long after my last post in this thread and I took it home. It’s a interesting mix of Series 80 slide on a more or less 1911A1 frame with A1 style trigger, safety and slide release, but with a flat mainspring housing.

I’m not going to stop carrying my pro sized alloy framed Kimber 1911s in either .45 ACP or 9m anytime soon. I’m also still not a real Series 1991 fan given the Series 80 slide and trigger operated firing pin safety.

However I am also *not* one of those skill limited trigger snobs who can’t shoot a pistol well and think that unless it’s got a sub 1.5 pound trigger the accuracy problem is caused by the gun rather than the shooter. They need to buy an 1895 Nagant and shoot it DA for awhile. They’ll never complain about a trigger ever again. The Walther PP is another good choice for trigger snobs to shoot to get over their trigger issues.

The trigger on this one actually isn’t bad at all. I just object to the Series 80 because it’s not the original Series 70, much like I object to the rebounding hammer Winchester lever guns because they don’t use the original Browning system. Admittedly a typical late 50 ish “get off my lawn you darn kids” attitude.

In any case a full size 1911 in 9mm is a joy to shoot on the range and it’s a good way to introduce new shooters to the 1911 format without scaring them off with recoil.

——

In that regard, I picked this RIA 1911 in .45 ACP up for dirt cheap about a week earlier from a guy who thought he wanted a 1911 in .45 ACP but was intimidated by the recoil. He was all of 6’ 2” and about 225 pounds, so I was surprised at his reaction to it.

I’m not a RIA fan boy, and I don’t like the sights on it. But to be fair this has proven to be a very reliable 1911, as is the RIA Baby Rock I bought about 10 years ago. I bought the Baby Rock to see how well a $250 .380 blow back mini 1911 could be. It was surprisingly just as accurate and even more reliable than my already quite reliable and accurate Kimber Micro which cost more than twice as much.

I bought this RIA 1911 for the same curiosity based reasons and it hasn’t disappointed. If you want a 1911 on a tight budget it’s a solid option - at least this one. Quality might vary a bit between pistols.

Not so much the 1960s but in general, the *Colt* 1911 has been chambered for a number of rounds as part of competition for military contracts and or to get around restrictions in countries that do not allow civilian ownership of handguns in military calibers.

Military rounds include the .30 Luger, 7.63 Mauser, 9mm Steyr, and 9mm Parabellum, in addition to the .45 ACP. (There was also the 9.8mm Colt developed for a Romanian contract, but that wasn’t in a 1911, but rather a scaled down weapon, about the size of the Star Model BM.)

The 9mm Largo was chambered commercially for sale in Italy and in South America and of course the other major commercial rounds were the .45 ACP, .38 ACP, 9mm Luger and the .38 Super.

Later, the 1911 was factory chambered in the 10mm Auto as well as the .40 S&W.

There was also the .22 LR Colt Ace, which shares the 1911 frame but the slide is different, so again it’s not a true 1911.

As for a *Colt* 1911 factory chambered in 7.62x25, I am not aware of Colt ever doing that. However you can find GI 1911A1 chambered in it. We gave a lot of 1911A1s to the Chinese in WWII as well as the Koreans in The Korean conflict, and to the South Vietnamese during that conflict.

The Chinese converted many of them to 7.62x25 after they became Communist to leverage Soviet ammunition and their own efforts to standardize with Soviet rounds. And of course they also produced their own 1911 semi-clone in 7.62x25.

1911s captured by the north during the Korean war were similarly converted for the same reason. The North Vietnamese did the same following the Vietnam war.

Currently, you’ll find 1911s in a very long list of cartridges, just not made by Colt, and some of them are also not true 1911s given widened grip frames, etc to accommodate longer rounds.

I'm a 1911 addict. Got a bunch of 'em. I've always thought the only proper calibers were .45acp and .38 Super. I got lots of guns in both.
After many years of considering it pure blasphemy, a few months ago I finally broke down and got a 9mm 1911. Its a RIA Tact II. Good gun, lots of nice features. Shoots good.

Anyway, after giving it a good workout at the range, all I can say is... Meh! Nothing special here.
I'll probably keep it just for GP. But I don't think I'll be shooting it a lot. I still prefer my 1911s in .45acp. For 9mm, I'll stick with my Hi-Powers.

Back in the late 70's I had two Colt Combat Commanders chambered in 9mm. One was blued and the other one was Satin Nickle. I foolishly sold them off for something I must have really needed at the time.

I recently picked up a 9mm Bul Govt. Model 1911 and a Springfield Armory "Ronin" Commander in 9mm. The Bul is quite a shooter. I haven't had a chance to get the Ronin out to the range yet.

Dan Wesson seems to have discontinued this Officer's Model-size pistol and I can't understand why as they are beautifully made and very accurate and dependable. Looking at this photo, I couldn't tell you which was which caliber, but if you peer gingerly at the muzzle it doesn't take long to tell who's who and what's what.

Its a shame DW discontinued that gun because it was not only one of the nicest 1911 you could get but at the time it was the best production 9mm pistol you could find anywhere in the world!

A while back I added another Bul 9mm 1911 to the group. This time it is the Commander version:

I bought and started shooting a 1911 5" 45 in in '76 when I turned 21. MY first CC was a little lard butt officers acp and today I CC a lw commander in 45 . I spent time shooting a buddy's springer 5" 9mm that he used in uspsa and my wife has a kimber ultra 9mm that darns it easy to shot well .

If I'm not carring a 45 its an early M&P 4.25 40sw for big city and road trip travel . This one also has a thumb safety and apex hst kit for the nice trigger pull .
But as of yet I do not carry a 9mm . I getting old and wear trifocals so the day is coming I need a dot optic and want a 9mm so MY 9mm will not be a 1911 . I have a M&P 4" compact thumb safety with a Apex fst trigger kit for the short reset 3lb 6oz to 8oz trigger pull and it has a green circle dot optic on it for if or when I decide I need a 9mm .

I roll my own practice ammo and have plenty of 9mm , 40sw and 45 set aside for family too .

TBH, I've changed up my daily carry as well. Switched to my MkIII Hi Power 9mm simply for capacity.
15+1 vs 8+1 in my Wilson/Colt Officer's, I'll still carry her from time to time, but mainly want round count now.

Why a 9mm 1911? Nobody needs a reason, really. I know it may seem sacrilegious; like a Single Action Army in .357 Mag or a scope on a lever gun. There are 1911s in 22LR that few scorn. Why izzat? Whatever floats your boat. I have some atypical 1911s; 9mm and .38 Super. 9mm is fun to shoot and inexpensive relatively speaking. That's good enough for me.

Kinda like people there are few guns that I actively dislike, like Hi-Points and that guy . . . .

Well, since this thread has been resurrected....
Update on my previous post #104.
I tried. I really did try to like that gun. But it just didn't happen.
For a 9mm I still much prefer my Hi-Powers.
That RIA 9mm is now a 38 Super.

Just seen this old thread. I am probably going against the flow here, but to me the utility of the 9mm is the fact it is available in lightweight, hi cap, sub-compact size handguns.

If I am going to carry a relatively heavy, low-capacity pistol like a 1911, I prefer it in a more substantial caliber, like .45 acp. The BHP is an exception, but if were offered in .45 acp without a significant size increase, I would own one.

I own a fair number of 1911's, and all are .45 acp, not counting a brief dalliance with the 10mm.

Not counting a couple BHP's and a few milsurp guns, most of my 9mm's are poly frame compact or subcompact weapons. I agree with some other posters that if you are a handloader, and want a 1911 in 9mm, you are better off with a .38 super. Better reliability, I think, and a little more potential "umph" than most 9mm luger loadings.
