Just a random thing I came across someplace I can't mention:

I think this is the first Walther PPK/S ever I've seen with a department marking.

It's a .380 made by Ranger for Interarms in the 1990s.

To avoid misunderstandings, I don’t have and am not buying the gun, I just borrowed the pictures and am sharing them for educational purposes ;)

I think I read about those in a gun magazine. They were meant to be carried in the pant's pocket. I believe the Indiana SP did the same thing.

I believe KSP issued those as backup weapons at the same time the S&W 1076's(?) were carried.

Very nice,
I would be looking to buy that had I stumbled across it. I very much like issued, unissued and commemorative Departmental firearms

Based on the inventory number, I kind of doubt they were issued as backups to the 1076s

That PPK/s is numbered almost 1900 pieces away from my KSP 1076. Today the KSP only has about 850 Troopers. Back 32 years ago in 1990 I have to believe the number of Troopers was smaller than today, That just sounds too far apart

Hmmm. Anyone care to comment about Indiana, as well? I’ve never seen or heard of one, but that means almost nothing. I do vaguely recall reports of a few instances where Indiana State Troopers used back-up weapons, the one I remember most happened to be a Chief’s Special, but I never heard any police officer acquaintances comment on official policy and if they had much leeway on what weapons were carried.

A buddy of mine was a KSP Trooper (LT) retiring in the early 2000s. Their Troops were issued the Walthers as backup/off duty guns. He still has his. I don't know if when they retired they were gifted the Walthers or they could buy them. I kind of recall him saying KSP quit issuing the Walther as a backup and started issuing some other small frame auto in its place. Can't recall what replaced the Walther.

I have a friend who is a retired KSP detective. He said they were issued to plainclothes officers. He wasn’t positive about the time frame, but he believes his was issued in the early to mid eighties. He doesn’t think they were backup guns but some may have used them as such.

Indiana SP had Beretta .380’s for a while. I don’t know if they were issued for plainclothes carry or as off duty guns. I think this was when the troopers carried Beretta 92’s as their sidearm. Could be wrong on this.

NC State Highway Patrol issued Beretta .380's to the Governor's Security Detail when they carried the Beretta 92 and 96.

They issued 2.5 inch Model 66 and 686's when they carried the four inch version of those guns. When they went to Sigs the Governor's Security carried P239's. They carry P320's now, but not sure what the security detail carries.

Sent an email to my buddy who was the retired Kentucky State Police Troop. Just heard back. He confirmed the KSP issued the PPK/s to all their Troops as backups when they were carrying the 1076. When KSP went to Glock 35 everyone was issued the Glock 27 as backup.

When I joined the Division 25 years ago, we were issued P7M8s. Everyone carried them with the exception of our Casino Unit, who were authorized to carry either the P7M8 or the Walther PPK. Ours were never marked, as I believe they were purchased by the individual detective.
