Default You are a 1940-1950 Detective - your piece would be?

So just for fun you are a 1940-1950 time frame detective. If you could carry anything from that time period what would it be?

And do you currently have something from that time period that would work too?

Mine would be my Military and Police snub pre 10 - back strap has a T T 9 stamp from a local police department so it fits based upon born date and I'm a revolver fan. So I would carry a K frame snub and I happen to have one.

So what would your pick be?

I'd have to go with a Colt Detective Special. Winchester M97 in the trunk.

One of these two, of course. Did ANY detective of the 1940s/50s carry anything else?

Detective Special for sure. That's the gun I see in reruns. Not for me the trigger guard hits my knuckle.

My first choice would be a 2" M&P Round Butt just like OP's attached photo, Good enough for Joe Friday. But then, when I was assigned as a detective in the 1970s, I carried a 2" Model 12 Round Butt

Joe Friday also carried a Colt. Depending on the year of the show.

I was just at the range 2 days ago shooting my choice - a Colt Detective Special that letters as having been shipped to von Lengerke & Antoine in Chicago in 1946.

So I have heard, but I never noticed a Colt in any of the episodes I ever saw, but then you didn't always see his gun. I do remember the 6" M&P his partner ( Frank Smith) carried, before Henry Morgan. (Yeah, Henry is correct, he changed his screen name to Harry at some time, at least before MASH.) Can't find when the Henry to Harry change occurred except sometime in the 196os.

My question is what gun did Friday carry in the radio episodes???

Either an M&P 2" RB (pre M10) or a Colt Dick Spl. While I like the S&W action better, the Colt is lighter and smaller - still holds 6.

My first CCW carry piece when I started toting in 1979 WAS a blue 2" RB M10. After a few years I opted for a M60 and then upgraded to a M60-7. Carried that one up until 4 years ago when I bought a Sig P365.

Browning HP or for those light times, a 1934 Beretta .380.

In the 1950's? Detective? Most likely a 2 inch S&W M-10. Would of course carry it in a nice shoulder holster w/ a backup Airweight in a ankle holster. And I would of course be armed with my laser bright blue eyes with which I would dazzle anyone who I might confront. Just one look is all it'd take. They'd collapse like a bowl of jello. Probably never need to take my revolvers out of the holsters except for cleaning and to change out ammo for fresh loads. :-) Sincerely. bruce.

Though I love the Det. Sp. there’s something about the perfect weight of the Cobra.

Between J, K, & N frames I own 7 S&W snubbys, I own a Cobra. They are all well and good, but a 1911 (or Commander) and a 97 for when the good times roll!

I'd look to Dick Tracy for guidance..............

The first half of that decade Dad carried whatever the Coast Guard issued him in the Philippines and other parts of the South Pacific.........................

Dad was a Sargent in the late 40s-50s and carried a Colt Detective Special when in plain cloths.

Don't forget the fedora, loud plaid sport coats, hand-painted neckties, a pack of Lucky Strikes or Camels and a Zippo lighter. Doube-breasted suits optional for fancier gigs, but the fedora was always required.

Probably a Browning Hi-Power if I could get my hands on one. If not, likely a 2-4” pre-Model 10.

As a detective I would probably carry a Colt Cobra .38 assuming I worked in the area I grew up in. Albany had its problems but it was much better than NY City or other big cities. Gun would have been light, reasonably powerful and the city at that time only would allow .38s as duty weapons.

Yes I have a very nice shrouded Cobra ,38 and Dick special .38 of that time frame in the safe. The Cobra being lighter would be the one used.

For all those who listed the
Hi Power, may I ask where
would you get 9mm ammo?

Sure, some was around but....

Get in line, laddies, and carry
a .38 Special or .45 ACP.
Don't be a weirdo.

The very practical choice would be the Detective Special. Its strong point was one more round than a Smith J frame. This one is mine, shipped in May1959.

Just an hysterical historical
movie note of sorts but I
believe the 9mm was first
featured in a non-war
American movie in
"House of Bamboo."

Robert Ryan in Sam Fuller's
1955 crime film carried a
Walther P38, highly unusual.
Fuller was a WWII vet and
probably liked the odd angle.

Of course, French crime movies
of the same period regularly
featured 1911s, Lugers and
Walthers, left overs from WWII.
But it wasn't long before the
S&W Model 10 invaded French
gangster films.

A detective from the 50s and 40s just needed a slapper, black jack and a phone book.

Default My picks....

1940's to 1950's Texas -

Colt 1911 in 38 Super (in Brill of course!)
Colt SAA in 45 Colt
Smith & Wesson model of 1926 44HE aka Wolf & Klar in 44spl (or M&P snub for smaller stature folks....)
Winchester 94 30-30
Rem 11 12 gauge
- Or if you work in a really bad area, a Lebman 1911 full auto conversion

Gotta have some mother of pearl stocks (or ivory) with steer head carved.

My choice would also be a Colt DS. The only police detective I ever personally knew carried a Colt .25. But it was a small town.

Unlikely that many outside of South Texas ever heard of Lebman.

The old adage applies: One Riot, One Ranger

Just kidding, I would choose one handgun to carry, and leave the rest in my vehicle (I would say truck, but the Rangers in the 40's seemed to prefer cars??).

Actually , Horace Kephart wrote of , and included a picture of , a Prohibition Agent in the Smokey Mtns carrying a Luger in a unique rig , so real world usage was greater than zero .

Contemporary firearms literature shows that there was interest in the Luger among American Gun Cranks from the start , with a certain amount of Commercial Imports , plus all the WWI bringbacks . But the Luger was pretty much it for mainstream American shooters in 9x19 until post WWII bringbacks and surplus post war .

Lawmen ( and shooters generally) with an interest in full power midbore autos were all about the .38 Super , and lesser degree the earlier .38 acp .

**************

SAFireman's pics above , does illiustrate a meaningful Regional variation in first half of 20th Century .

A significant portion of LE and quasi LE in Texas and the Southwest , and portions of the Appalachians with histories of fueding or violent mining disputes would carry serious armaments .
