Recently walked into a LGS with every intention to walk out with a new 3 inch Colt Python. But, they had not updated their website and it had been sold. There in the case was a 3 inch Colt King Cobra. Handled it, really liked it and worked a deal.

Wow, what a nice revolver! The size and balance are sweet. The fit and trigger pull are impressive. Really, there are not many revolvers available today that compare. The Ruger SP-101 and Taurus 605 3 inchers are 5 shots. Maybe the 6 shot Kimber? I believe it really is a modern replacement of the popular S&W Model 65 3 inch.

While certainly functional, I do not really favor the Hogue grips. Think a $900 revolver should have some nicer wood grips. The brass bead front sight is a classy touch, but not easy for me to pick up. I replaced mine with a Marbles fiber optic sight. I like the smooth trigger face.
Ordered a Simply Rugged Silver Dollar Pancake (which arrived in one week!). Pleased that Safariland K Frame Speedloaders function okay, though some ammo worked better than others? Will be on the hunt for a couple Safariland D Frame Speedloaders to compare.

Shot 100 rounds of Norma Target .38 Special ammunition and a couple cylinders of Remington Golden Saber .357 Magnum 125 grain JHP. Revolver functioned perfectly. Would have liked to shot the Speer 135 grain Short Barrel ammunition, but can’t find any. Believe that would be a perfect carry round for this revolver.

Overall, I believe this is an outstanding carry revolver. I think Colt could have come out with another snake name for it instead of repurposing the King Cobra name, but it’s just a name. Also think this revolver in .327 Federal Magnum would be awesome! I’m glad to be a Colt revolver Owner again after many years! Would enjoy hearing impressions from other King Cobra Owners!

I agree, these are nice revolvers, but with all design changes, Colt should have given them a different name or at least added "New" to the name.

From what I've seen of the new Colt's they are doing a great job! I need another Revolver like I need a hernia, but I can't get the new Python out of my head - might just break down and buy one.

Bought the new model King soon after they came out. A friend had an original King. Aside from being 357mag, they're two different guns. The original is much heftier. The new one's is more the size of my old D frame Police Positive and Detective Special, making it more carry friendly, and the trigger's night & day from the old model.

I’ve been thinking about buying the King Cobra 3 inch ever since it hit the market. You’ve just nudged me a little closer to finally pulling the trigger. But yes, wish Colt had gone with nice wood grips — at least that’s an upgrade easily made.

I agree they are very nice. I too have been researching and am very close to purchasing one. However, grips and different sights are very limited. The only aftermarket grips you could change too immediately are VZ. In fact the lack of aftermarket support is the only thing holding me back.

Agree that this new King Cobra is a nice revolver. Had a chance to handle a new 3” Python last week and I was very impressed with that as well. Fit & Finish, timing, and trigger were outstanding. Only reason I didn’t get it was the $1795 asking price…yikes! I’m sure price will come down as months pass and more become available.

There are plenty of places now selling the Python for msrp or below. I bought my 4.25” last August for under msrp and bought a 6” from Sportsman’s Warehouse and a 3” from Midway USA for msrp in the last couple months.

I'm not really a Colt fan, but I do have a new 3" King Cobra that I acquired as a result of a purchase that that I take the Colt to get the S&W that I wanted. It's a really pretty nice piece. I don't care for the rubber grips at all.
I have very little knowledge of modern Colt revolvers. If I was to try and spruce this revolver up with some classy wooden stocks, what would I look for as far a frame size? Are Colt grip frames standard like S&W J, K, L, N frame designations? Might even get some "Mothers Mag Wheel Polish" and put a "Faux" nickel finish on it.

You’ll look for “New King Cobra” or something designated by the latest years. The old KC was a different frame size, and the old D frame grips aren’t wide enough at the top of the grip frame. This gun is comparable to the old Diamondback, but wider at the top of the grip frame.
