My son asked me if it was ok to use a sabot slug in a old poly choke equipped barrel if the choke was set on slug setting? My advise was to use a lead slug, but I had no experience with sabots.
Thoughts, cautions, experiences, appreciated!

You provided sage Dad advice.

My understanding has always been that he will require a rifled barrel or a rifled choke tube for decent sabot accuracy results.
Go with the rifled slug with Poly choke set more open (slug setting or C/IC).

No sabots in any kind of choked barrel! They are designed for rifled barrels and are unlikely to stabilize in a smoothbore for starters.......... Even a Polychoke set on CYL (or SLUG if so marked) is not going to overcome that basic issue. Sabots are designed to spin the slug like a rifle bullet for improved accuracy.

Set to CYL it may not damage anything but is not going to get good results. Set on anything else can damage the choke. I have had a number of customers over the years who found this out the hard way. Have seen both fixed and tube type chokes damaged from this so your advice not to do it was spot on!
