When the 6.8 SPC first came out, I read most of the articles about the new cartridge. One of the points that struck me was the reason the developers chose the .30 Remington as the parent cartridge. It was said that the Remington's .422 rim was the largest diameter that could be accommodated by an AR-15 bolt head. The .450 Bushmaster, however, has a .473 rim diameter. That seems to me to be significantly larger. Was there some extra-fancy engineering involved in adapting the AR-15 for the latter round? I remember articles about the .450 saying its immediate predecessor, the .450 Professional, was developed for the AR-10 platform.
