Default 9mm carbines

I think te Henry is nice looking, like the sights and like that I can use my M&P mags in it. Also like the tang safety. In fact I like everything abou tit except for the price.
Ruger-kinda quirky looking compared to the Henry,BUT is takedown and has the Ruger name behind it. BUT it requires me to buy a whole new set of Magazines (Glock or Ruger). It is also around $200 cheaper than the Henry.
Discussion is open for comments either way.

I had several (5) Marlin Camp 9 carbines, used 59/69 magazines. Very functional, the Henry Carbine reminds me of the Marlin.

At the NRA convention the crowd was too thick to get close enough to touch the carbine in Henry's display.

My overall opinion is: Same size as a M-1 Carbine without the usefulness.

Ruger in 9mm works for me: very accurate. GLOCK & PMAGs work great and are everywhere...

Cheers!

Happy with my Ruger, too, though I wish it was a little lighter (I know, physics). I'm thinking that someday the aftermarket (or Ruger)will come out with magazine adapters for other types. The Henry's interesting, too, and might be on my list someday.

If you're open to an AR pattern, I suggest looking at CMMG's offerings. I bought a CMMG Resolute in 9mm a couple months back. They offer it in several magazine types. Mine takes Sig 320 mags of which I have a bunch. The Glock configuration was an option I considered, but I'm Sig-leaning rather than Glock-leaning.

The gun has been completely reliable. It has an interesting delayed blowback action that's worth reading about. Works fine, but sooty cases are an odd attribute. The same loads in conventional pistol actions don't show this effect. A curiosity really, as it's a non-issue.

I have a Ruger. First one had troubles and after one trip back to the factory they gave me a new one and paid for all the administrative BS. I was a little disappointed with the problem in the first place but very happy with how they handled it. And I am very happy with the weapon itself. I have zero experience with the Henry.

When I decided I wanted a 9mm carbine I had to have the original PC9. I held out for one with factory ghost ring sight. I think they look great and lots of fun.

Haven’t seen a Henry yet, but it looks good!
Sorry now I didn’t get a M-1 Carbine when the guns and ammo were cheap.
Probably just go to Cabelas and buy some more Buckshot!

I have several 9mm carbines and like them. Fun to shoot, and offer increased muzzle velocity over a handgun. I chronographed several guns just yesterday found some interesting results. The ammo used was some Winchester 115gr JHP:

Diamondback DB9 Gen 4, 2-7/8" - 1061 fps
Sig P365, 3-1/2" - 1105 fps
Glock 19 Gen 1, 4" - 1170 fps
KelTec Sub 2000, 16" - 1337 fps

Pretty obvious that the 16" barrel of the KelTec adds a couple of hundred fps or so. The Ruger and Henry also have 16" barrels and so should provide a comparable performance boost. There is also an increase in practical accuracy.

I like the KelTec for its compact size and lightness, and the folding feature is kinda neato. The "iron" sights on it are virtually unusable, an optic of some kind is nearly mandated. I put a red dot sight on it using a 45 degree side mount so that it will still fold. An alternative would be a quick-detach sight mount, or just leave it unfolded - it's still very compact either way.

I also have the Ruger PCC which by comparison to the KelTec feels heavy and solid, which has its own appeal. Both are set up for Glock mags, but the KelTec can also be had in S&W M&P or Sig flavor, and even in .40 S&W.

By the way, KelTec has a $100 rebate for purchases of a new Sub2000 through June 30, 2023. That's what tipped me over the edge to buy one, after rebate my total price was $376 (not including the RDS).

I have a Hi Point 995. Terrible trigger, but with a cheap red dot you can still shoot 2" groups at 50 yards from a bench. 124gr +P JHP ammo goes downrange with authority. I don't own a chrono, but the supersonic crack is most distinct.

Default Beretta....

...CX Storm makes a nice one but it's pricier.

S&W came out recently with one that pivots open.

I have a Keltec and it's loads of fun.

In fact, carbines are my funnest gun, I'm a carbine nut. For HD I'd rather have a carbine than a pistol. They aim just so naturally.

I have the Marlin, my M659 magazine work fine, I like the heft and recoil dampening qualities of the steel receiver.

I like my Kel-tec Sub 2000. Mine takes Glock mags. The folding capability was the selling point for me.

I'd go with the Ruger, and buy a few 33 round factory Glock mags for it. KCI makes similar mags at half the price, but I wouldn't mess with them.

Pretty sure the Ruger comes with a 1/2x28 threaded barrel if you ever wanted to make it quiet.

I have 3 9mm carbines, a CZ Scorpion, A Beretta CX4 Storm, and a Hi Point. Neither of the ones you are looking at though.

Bottom line, I really like the Beretta. It takes model 92 pistol mags, and despite its looks, is very ergonomic, light weight, compact (almost semi-bull pup). Mine is accurate, and has been 100% reliable thru almost a case of mixed ammo. Nicer shooting than the CZ, and miles ahead of the Hi Point. I thought the CZ would be my favorite, but the Beretta has done nothing but impress me. They are "futuristic" looking compared to the Henry or old Marlins, but shoulder and handle great. They are about seven hundred and change. My 2 cents, anyway.

TNW Carbine. Accurate, lightweight, takedown, inexpensive and simple caliber conversions, choice of colors including 2 tone and Glock mag compatible.

I've had the opportunity to play with both the Ruger and the Kel Tec, both set up for glock mags.
I found that the Kel Tec was surprisingly accurate, lite and no failures made for a fun set up. It had a Mcarbo hinged red dot base and a red dot of some sort that I cannot remember.

I had a Marlin Camp 9 years ago. Ended up trading it for an 1894 Marlin 44 magnum. (Great gun, but I immediately missed the PCC)

Then picked up a Beretta CX4 Storm (using 92 mags). I liked it pretty well, but I'm a bigger fan of wood & blued steel, and eventually sold it.

Now I have another Camp 9 Marlin (Deluxe), and I'm keeping this one. The Henry looks okay, but I see no need or reason to replace the Marlin. It's handsome and runs great! That's my discussion on the subject.

Wood & blued steel beat plastic every time.

Love pistol caliber carbines. I have a Hi Point carbine in 40 S&W and been shooting it for years. It has thousands of rounds down range. Zero issues. I added a red dot and it will shoot fist sized groups at 50 yards. Add in the under 300.00 price and rock solid guarantee and made in USA and it was no-brainer for me.

My two...

A few issues back Brian Pearce did a good write-up on the std model Ruger 9mm PC carbine in Rifle magazine. Convinced me of the quality and value for the price and I bought one. I have several Glock magazines so I'm good to go. The Henry is over priced like all of their products.

I got to handle the Henry in 9mm last week. It looked well built but the price tag was up there. Now if they made it in 45 ACP it might get my dollar!!

The Henry is clunky, with an excessively heavy barrel and a receiver that is much harder to field strip and clean.

It can be had with alternative Glock or Sig/S&W Mag well inserts but it costs about $30 more with that option. But without it you are stuck with propriety Henry magazines.

The Ruger carbine is lighter, handier, is a take down design and has some excellent after market stock options. It’s also easier to field strip and clean. It’s also a couple hundred dollars cheaper.

It offers the same convenience that having a rifle or carbine that shoots the same round as your revolver has had for the last 150 years.

I like having a lever gun in .357 Mag to pair with a revolver chambered for the same cartridge.

I also like having a semi auto carbine in the same caliber as the various 9mm pistols I carry.

Plus, with longer barrels 9mm Luger is capable of .357 Mag revolver ballistic performance.

Besides a Colt 6450 is just plain fun as is an MP5.

Both are effective to 200 yards, and both my 16” Ballistic Advantage equipped AR-9 and my 9mm AR based pistol with an 8.3” Ballistic Advantage barrel are 2 MOA accurate out to 200 yards.

I bought the Ruger a year ago. I have been pleased with it. I had no glock mags or spare Ruger ones. A trip to the gun show got me 10 ten round mags for $50 from someone who was glad he didn't have to give them away. I put a 4 power scope on it and it shoots about 4" with my cast loads at 100 yards. It is heavier than I like, but lighter than the Henry. No one with ever confuse it with a Charlie Russell sculpture but its looks grow on you.

I picked up a couple KP-31 Suomi carbines, which is the semiautomatic version of the Finnish submachine gun. Built like a tank. It uses a 36 round box magazine or 71 round drum. The 36 round magazine is heavy enough. I don't know how anybody would hold up this gun with a loaded drum on it.

The Colt SMG was a notoriously poor performer. The MP5 is still king.

I haven't handled a Henry yet. I've shot the current production Ruger 9mm, brought to the range by a guest. I liked it. Handles just like my old school PC .40. The option of using Glock mags wasn't available when I got mine.

PCCs are just fun on the range. My 9mm CMMG is a serious training tool. Set up exactly like my 5.56 and 6.8 carbines, it allows me to run close range drills on the pistol steel. Like the Ruger, I bought too soon so it takes the proprietary Colt style mags.

Low recoil, cheap to shoot, load it up with +P self defense ammo for when the goblins call and it will get the job done.

357 mag performance? Nope. Put that 357 in a rifle like your 9mm. And all it will do is suck dust from the 357.
But heck......You guys enjoy your toys!!

Years ago I had a Marlin Camp 9 carbine and it was a great little firearm and I liked that it used my series 59 S&W magazines that I already owned.
I should have never traded it away for the next shinny object that I now can't even remember what it was.
I have built a 16" AR15 9MM upper that uses the ENDOMAG P-Mag conversion magazines and I have had zero problems with it.
I also have paid for and await the new S&W FPC and to be honest I wouldn't have bought it more than likely but I ended up with $300 dollars worth of Cabelas gift cards and had $150 in club card points so I will be in it $120 dollars.
I also bought a LE Trade in M&P 40 a few years ago and had bought a 9mm barrel and picked up several 9mm LE Trade in magazines that will work in the new S&W FPC.
I do worry about the folding system on this new carbine but I feel I will not be folding it up very often so it should last for me.

PS--After reading all of the comments I forgot that I do have a 38/357 Rossi lever action and it is very fun. I just use 38 special in it because of the cost.

Had Beretta CX-4s for 20 some years......
Pairs nicely with my Beretta 92s...15,18,20 and 30rd factory & Mec-gar mags.
29" OAL w/ 16" barrel; IIRC 5.5lbs

Why 9mm ?.... why did the SEALS and others use the MP5. Israel the UZI.

Fast 2/3 shot taps...... fast fist size 5rd groups at 50 yds

and fun at the range or urban SHTF

I have a HK SP5 and SP5K both SBR's, but semi auto.

I'd class both at the top of 9mm carbines, but they sure ain't cheap!

I have owned my CMMG M4 9mm since 2014 and I am very pleased with it.
Paid $1,050 for it according to my records.

That right there. Don't bump a Colt smg mag lest the rounds all spew out the top. MP5SD

I've only handled one, so far. I was pleased with the looks, feel and features. Honest Outlaw couldn't get through his review of one which came with Henry's own magazine system. Sootch00's came set-up for Glock, and his example seemed to run well.

Fluting inside the chamber allows for for a longer, firmer grip on the brass as it expands. That provides for a longer dwell-time before extraction, which softens the recoil impulse. Most popularly known on HK products.

They also shoot softer than the newer carbine does. The only downer is being limited to Ruger P-series mags.

NOT for use in SouthPaw mode...but...M-Carbo makes an accessory brass/gas deflector if you need it. They are quite fun to shoot, and mine was pretty darned accurate, as these things go.

A fantastic option, also. Looks that you either love/hate, and limited to Beretta 92 mags. I somewhat regret selling mine.

Read my post carefully. I clearly stated a 9mm carbine has .357 Mag *revolver* performance.

I own a Model 92 20” short rifle and Model 92 24” rifle and I am well aware of the .357 rifle velocities. Mine will launch a 125 gr bullet at a bit over 2200 fps and a 158 gr bullet at 1840 fps.

But none of that changes the fact that 9mm carbine performance is better than 9mm pistol performance and on part with .357 revolver performance, particularly when loaded with comparatively slower powders like HS-6 or Power Pistol.

Mike,
9mm being a "wienie cartridge" is your opinion. I respectfully disagree with you. 10-15 years ago, I would have agreed with that comment but, not anymore.

I have a pistol caliber carbine (PCC) in an AR platform, I personally think a PCC or SBR (where legal) are the ultimate home defense guns.

have a blessed day.

Own kel-tec, hi-point, sig mpx and Ruger in 9mm.

The hi-point is surprisingly accurate and reliable. Just be careful disassembling it, lots of pieces. Sights are cheesy but functional.

Keltec is handy, cheesy but functional sights, simpler to field strip, accurate, simple to fold/unfold stock and has huge advantage of taking glock mags.

Ruger is accurate, built like a tank but heavier and has huge advantage of glock mags.

The mpx is in another class entirely (you pay for this) and gas operated for minimal recoil.

Awhile ago started planning ahead for "aging out", specifically giving consideration to easier to operate pw's for when i will not be as proficient with a pistol. 9mm from a carbine barrel satisfies this.

Have never seen or tried the Henry, but after buying one of their lever 44 mags, am unlikely to buy anything else from them without close inspection of the barrel interior, if at all. Yes they fixed it, but rifle should have never left the factory.

Have also vested in short pistol caliber levers, but none feed the 9mm and have gotten expensive to buy and feed.

Plenty of people have been laid low by the 9MMP-and the 380, 32ACP, 38 S&W, etc. I was a long time reader of Charlie Askins, never recall him writing about the caliber wars, he, Jim Cirillo, plenty of others were pretty deadly with the 38 Special. Only the hits count. Speed and power are fine but accuracy is final.
