Pachmayr Pistol Cases
I and a friend still use these dinosaurs. A friend ask me if they still made them. I told him none that I can find new. My question is when did they stop making these?

I bought mine in 1975 (still have it) I believe they made them for quite a few years after I bought mine.

Thanks, but can't use more than one. To me they are useful, but heavy. I take mine to the range once a week. I use a folding luggage cart to get it from the car to the shooting bench.

I've got an old Bianchi range box, but don't use it.
I had a nice Strong Case box, but sold it. Too darn heavy! I switched to a soft side tool bag and pistol rugs long ago.
Canatek and Hyskore still make range/bullseye boxes. They'll set you back $500 and $300 respectively.

I have picked up four or five from the local gun shop. They get estates in and once in a while a gun box comes in. After sitting on the shelf a while I sometimes offer $50 for a nice one. I sold one this morning for what I had in it to a friend that shoots with us. That is what started the conversation about how old they were. I can not imagine paying those prices for a new pistol case!

The Super Deluxe cases are still listed in the 1987 Pachmayr catalog. You can see by my avatar pic that I still use one I bought new in 1982.

Mine says "Gun Ho" for brand but it looks the same as the Pachmayr in the original post. I seldom use mine anymore and recently had it for sale on my table at a large gun show. Absolutely no interest; probably very few attendees even knew what it was. $50.00 would probably be a good price for one.

These old bullseye boxes bring good money on ebay. Do some research before dumping it...

You can overprice one at $200.00 but it won't bring anywhere close to that. Virtually no one uses them these days. I've belonged to a private gun club many years. In that time, I've seen exactly one shooter using a pistol box; an old Bullseye guy in his eighties and that was about ten years ago.

The problem I've found with my 4-gun box is that it holds relatively few of the items you need for a day at the range. I still had to take my Kennedy tool box with any tools and equipment I might need as well as targets, stapler, hearing protection, cleaning equipment, etc. The pistol box will hold four handguns, ammo, a spotting scope, a few magazines, and little else.
Maybe I just travel with too much junk.

They weigh 17 pounds but would cost $$ to ship.

Ok, you hurt my feelings, but I am an old bullseye shooter so there’s that. 😁
Use mine every week during our season.
Most of the shooters on our team have one of some make, some are home made.

The old style bullseye boxes like these are great! Once you open them up, you can see everything you've got. Very easy to keep them organized. Being able to mount a spotting scope is nice, too.
The problem with soft padded bags is, you need two hands to pull them open and a third hand to dig around the bottom until whatever you're looking for emerges from the dark corners.
(Kinda reminds me of women who have those big sack purses).
A good option is to use the box for stuff you need regularly while on the firing line, while a soft bag is OK for a few bulky things like a staple gun, hearing protection, bench mat, etc.
I built mine from a set of plans that were in an old gun magazine. Can you imagine them doing that today? Back then, gun magazines published useful articles and weren't just shills for their advertisers. The factory made cases were always an expensive item. Building one was important for me, at least back then.
To answer AJ's question, I remember the Pachmayr case was discontinued perhaps in the 1980s, and that the Gung-Ho case lasted until 2000 or so. But, I also remember that supplies of both kept trickling forth on and off. Gil Hebard offered one or the other pretty much until he passed away.

Maybe you do have to take to much stuff. Mine is a three gun case. Usually I try to keep all pistols/revolvers the same caliber to simplify the ammo required. I carry a small box of tools, hearing protection (custom made ear plugs), something to pad the shooting bench to cushion the guns, spotting scope, targets, cleaning gear and rods, masking tape, magazines and chamber flags. Box probably weighs 35 pounds full. Staplers and stuff are supplied by our range. I like the convenience of just carrying one box. The weight is off-set by using a folding luggage cart.

Mine has the same plate. Wonder when Los Angles 15 quit being used?
I saw the shipping on one on Ebay and it was listed as $30.00.

When I saw "dinosaurs" I thought somebody was talking about me.
Seriously, I have one of the Gun Ho pistol boxes that I probably bought from Gil Hebard back in the early 1990s. Since I was young and strong back then I decided to get the 5 gun box. Unfortunately, both the box and I seem to gained weight over the years.
But rather than having everybody chuck their old vintage pistol boxes, my CPAP machine enhanced problem solving ability may have come up with an answer. If I have a match or range session that requires more than the 2 guns I can carry comfortably in my soft range bag, I use the Gun Ho box as the "mother box" for transporting all of the guns to and from the range in. Then for each particular event I can put the prior event's guns back in the mother box, put the appropriate guns for the next event in the soft range bag, put the appropriate shells and magazines in the soft Harbor Freight bag, and away I go to the firing line. But it was sort of nice when a young lady carried my range bag up to the line for me at the big Harrisburg match.

I still have my box from my PPC days. Purchased new in the 80s. It now has 4, 45 ACP revolvers in it.

I guess I'm a dinosaur too. I still have my Pachmayr case and I do take it to the range .... occasionally. I'm old school and I like those things. It usually initiates a conversation or two during matches at our gun club. I paid $80 for it used probably 25 years ago. They are heavy and bulky and my newer synthetic material range bag is more practical, but I still like the box.

Yes, they are heavy.
But, they are great for the outdoor ranges.
And, if you are bringing a passel of shooters they work out quite well.
enjoy,

Okay, maybe I've been shamed into getting my Gun-Ho box out and giving it another try for the first time in years. I have an old Bushnell 15x-30x (I think) spotting scope that I mount on the Gil Hebard adjustable mount on the inside of the lid. I'm surprised with the photos shown here that so few have a spotting scope mounted on their pistol boxes. Very necessary for 25- or 50-yard shooting.

Call me a dinosaur if you like. I have a thick reptile-like skin!
I enjoy old school Bullseye. We have a pretty decent turnout at two local clubs. Weekly matches at one, monthly at the other. A third club in the area hosts Bullseye, but I haven't shot there.
I use an aluminum Strong Case I bought from a forum member. It's lighter than the traditional Pachmayr boxes. The box's weight is not the issue, though. It's three guns, ammo, spotting scope and associated clap-trap that makes it heavy. Still it's very convenient to haul it all in one box.
Bullseye, now called Precision Pistol is a lot of fun. It's a reall challenge to shoot good scores with one hand at 25yd and 50yd. It's not what it was in the heyday, but still has a following. We're even getting younger shooters interested.

shipping is what kills the deal. I found mine on craigslist 50 miles away, so it was cheap enough to drive and get it.

I sold mine on this Forum about a year ago. It was in great shape but I could never justify lugging a heavy cumbersome box around. I much prefer putting pistols in a pistol rug and then putting them in a medium sized gym type shooting bag.
About the only advantage I lost is the ability to mount a spotting scope on the box. That said, I just use a 12" tripod instead.

I bought my wife a Bullseye box in early 2006. It was the last one in stock at an on-line shooting distributor (Sinclair's ???) . Hers is 4-gun, standard front door with a scope mount, and rear panel held in place with a vertical latch.

Another dinosaur here! Still have mine but like others, don’t use it much anymore. I think the range officers would have a heart attack if I opened it up with a couple of guns facing backwards!

I still have mine from my PPC days.
Shortly after we got married, just over 50 years ago, my wife bought it for me. As much as I liked it, I also wondered what I would do with all that space. We all know what happens when we think we have extra space. Her thinking was that my old system, an ammo box and my revolver just in its holster, was half-derriered. She was right.
That box went to all practices and matches. It is covered on the outside with various match-related patches and decals, and on the inside lid with possible pins. It also has an old Balscope 20 which is mounted on the inside lid. That scope was small enough to fit, but had enough magnification to read the target at 50 yards.
I still use it, because I like to. It lives in my garage-shop-gym-gun maintenance area-man cave because it is handy there and looks cool.
It holds countless great memories, all because of my bride's foresight and initiative.
It started out as just a gun box, but it has become much more.

My Bullseye team has two kinds of shooters: those who have a pistol box and those who want a pistol box. I can't imagine being without mine - a Gun-Ho that's about 50 years old and functioning good as new. We have all types on the line - Pachmayr, Gun-Ho, Strong (all no longer made), a number of custom-built jobs ($$$), and the home-mades, some of which are very nice. The problem with the old Pachmayr cases is that all the ones I've seen don't have enough room to hold a gun with a tube-style dot sight mounted on it. Perhaps that's not a problem for the smaller reflex-type dot sights that are becoming increasingly popular.

The problem with the old Pachmayr cases is that all the ones I've seen don't have enough room to hold a gun with a tube-style dot sight mounted on it. Perhaps that's not a problem for the smaller reflex-type dot sights that are becoming increasingly popular.

You could add another runner for the pistol tray. I would just make it the same distance below the runner above. Then you could use it for iron sighted guns and dot mounted guns. Just a thought and would not take away a lot of space.
