Default PCC scope recommendations

I have a Ruger PCC that I mounted a Bushnell TRS25 on.
Sunday I got to shoot it and was disappointed with the optic.
With the dot and zero magnification accuracy was wanting.
I understand the rifle isn’t “target quality”, but feel some magnification with the illuminated reticle would help.
I’m not deploying overseas, just for informal plinking and paper punching so I’d like to keep it budget friendly.

While I do not have a photo of these mounted, I have put several of the Ritton Mprd2 micro Red Dot sights on both carbines and SMGs, not too mention some handguns .

These are auto on, auto brightness and the manufacturer claims a battery life around 40,000 hours (that is more than 4 years of continuous on time). So I change my batteries every two years

I do not put magnified optics on defensive PCCs or SMGs. The magnification reduces the field of view and makes me slower

In my mind the goal of the optic is to reduce my time on target. If I can hit an 8" gong at 50 yards with great speed and little effort my goals have been realized

If greater distance or precision is required, I have higher powered surgical rifles to handle that job out to the wee distances

You can't really expect much out of an optic that sells for well under $100, even if it is 'just a red dot'. Especially on a PCC, where the design brief for accuracy is closer to "minute of man" than "minute of angle".

On something like a PCC, a non-magnified dot optic is really the right choice for the intended purpose. You could always add a 3x flip up magnifier behind it. I've used that combo quite a bit on AR platforms and like it better than an LPVO for general use on a 5.56 gun (under 200yds).

I have a number of recommendations but, most are discontinued. So just play with the concepts and enjoy.

I have a Tasco 55mm non magnifying dot with about 12 dot and reticle choices, on a Marlin Camp 45

I have a 2.5x shotgun/muzzel loading T/C scope on a Savage 24C (22/20gauge) That has a 5MOA circle with a dot in center and crosshairs outside the dot.

My favorite, a Simmons 34mm Red-dot non magnifying on a Marlin 45-70 guide gun. It has many reticles. All red! I like the 2 MOA Dot. Shoot with both eyes open!

My test is for the worst case scenario: Something that will eat you! AT 50 then 25 yards, using ammo that has the highest recoil. Shoot 5 shots as fast as you can and measure the group and the time. at 50 yards 1.7" at 25 yards, 1.25" With 2300 foot pound 45-70's, Time is 1.75 seconds.

Before you worry about a new optic, try new ammo. I found that my Ruger PCC really likes S&B 115 or 124s.
When I first got the rifle I had Winchester white box 115s and some Federal AE 115 & 124s. The gun was throwing shotgun patterns against my 8" steel plate at 50 yards with a higher end Holosun red dot. A guy at the range saw how frustrated I was getting and gave me half a box of S&B 124s. OMG the gun started shooting like a laser. I don't know if that stuff is a little hotter or what, but that gun loves it. I went and bought a couple of boxes off the shelf, just to reverify, then ordered two cases online.
I tried some Winchester Nato 9mm, it was better than standard velocity stuff, but still not nearly as good as the Sellier & Belloit.

Just noticed where you are at. Was just up through your way going to the Triumph dealership. There is no easy was to get to Mosities from the south. Pretty much like everything in the Pittsburgh area. Not knocking it, I'm originally from Allegheny county.

I had a 1 to 4x vortex on my PC9 and was impressed with how well it would shoot at 50 yards. It will put 10 rounds into less than an inch when shooting off a bipod . I have went back to a red dot mainly because of weight and shooting off hand.

One of the best scopes ever made is the simple Leupold 1 to 4X variable. The cheaper version, VX1, made for shotguns or muzzle loaders, had the heavy duplex which was more visible in low light. Only sold for about $200 on web sites and had the same reliability as all Leupolds. Probably find used ones for about $150 or less.

On my old school .40 Ruger PCC I have had good luck with the Burris Fast Fire. I have also mounted one at 45 degrees on a centerfire carbine with a magnified optic. They aren't the cheapest but they have served me well. If you are shooting your PCC beyond 50 yards you might want to consider one with a smaller dot and adjustable brightness (a dimmer dot tightens groups).

What sort of accuracy do you expect and what are you getting? With a cheap red dot on a HiPoint 995 I could get ~2.5" groups at 50 yards from the bench using 124gr JHP +P ammo. Seemed good enough for most social work.

My main problem is my eyesight.
My right eye won’t focus so shooting a rifle right handed the target is a blur. I have difficulty telling exactly where the dot is relative to the bullseye.
Handgun shooting I shoot left eye (dominant) but right handed. No problem.
Trying to shoot left handed feels unnatural.
I haven’t shot it left handed off a bench for accuracy

I highly recommend the Sig Sauer Romeo 5. I have three of them and they have all performed well with no problems. Usually can find them for around $130. If you have astigmatism, something like the Primary Arms SLx Microprism might be a better choice, albeit about double the price of the Romeo 5.
