Default REMINGTON 870 FIELDMASTER

Finally got to handle the new 870 Fieldmaster at a Bass Pro Shop nearby. My initial feeling it is certainly an improvement over the Express 870 in fit ,finish, and walnut. I understand the pump action is improved with polished action bars or vibra-honed and it seemed to pump smoothly as was my experience. Walnut was stained quite dark and not too bad in appearance. Retains the matte finish but suppose to be more durable in preventing rust. I know the trigger guard is synthetic but I can live with that. I was hoping someone on the forum that has one or has opinions can share their views on this newer variation of the 870. Am considering one in 3 inch 20 gauge. Price was $499 which isn't too steep. thanks in advance.

If you are a dove hunter, a 3" 20 has been called the "Official State Gun of Texas." If you hunt waterfowl, it is generally under gunned for the big Honkers! Otherwise, a pretty ideal gun. and gunsmiths everywhere know how to work on them!

I know dove hunters that go to Argentina, and shoot 200 to 400 rounds a day in T-shirts. The local ammo is 2 3/4 and a little weaker than ours. The guys use mostly Berretta automatics, and still come home with an elbow to shoulder bruise from 3 days of shooting.

Thanks for reply. Considering this one because of the improvements over the Express. A 12 may be more versatile for Trap but got an 1100 TB for that. A 20 with 26 inch barrel for Upland and pheasant game sounds good. I know Rem-Arms is offering the 870 Wingmaster also but price for one I saw is $899. Guess the old days of $300 for a Wingmaster are long gone.

I hunted everything with a variety of Wingmaster and Express models for decades. I do my wing shooting with Browning O/Us these days and hunt IL whitetail with no dash 57. I still turkey hunt with an 870 and have one set up for home defense.

I consider the 870 to be the most reliable repeating shotgun I've ever handled. In the hands of a skilled shooter the 3" 20 will do a fine job on any feathered game short of geese or tall ducks. The 870s seem to thrive on neglect and abuse.

Never handled a new Remington 870.

I have a couple Wingmasters, but their both around 50 years old.

Thanks again. Probably will go ahead on this one. Does look more utilitarian than the old Wingmaster but pumps and feels good to shoulder. Been a Remington fan and hope they can succeed in bouncing back with quality. That new 700 Alpha rifle with carbon stock and fluted barrel does look appealing though not inexpensive.
