Well, I just happened to be near my favorite LGS this afternoon with a little time to kill when I couldn't finish my errand (I found out the hard way that you can't just walk in to a Social Security office any more, you need a appointment, for Heavens' sake! Don't these people work for US!?!?) so I pulled on in for a looksee. Woohoo, Jackpot! Sitting there, darn near waving at me were several from my informal take-me-home-and-tuck-me-away-in-the-safe list! There was a real pretty nickel 36, a 3" 60-4, TWO 60-15s, and...... a really nice 940 9mm!!!
All but one of the 60-15s were under 600. I could not believe it! I got that 4473 done in record time, put $599 plus tax on my card and took home this BSTxxxx 1995-vintage 940-1. No box or papers, but it did have 3 moon clips with the rattiest 9mm bullets to complete the "package."
After getting that State Department 19-5 in that store a few weeks ago, I thought I'd used up my luck at that store, but no. I'm going to order a few more moon clips and take it for a test drive in a couple of weeks. And here I was, thinking I'd never even see one of these in person, never mind actually owning one!

Great score. I’ve been looking for one for years, they never pop up here.

I’m not sure I could have left that 60-4 all by itself…

That 3" 60-4 would have come home with me, along with the 940

I have plenty of 3" 60-15's, along with my 3" 60-10, but I am in need of a 3" 60-4

Congrats on the 940
I found my second one in Phoenix a couple months ago - mine are both no dashes. IMG_8612.jpeg

Nice find, don't see them all that often. A few years ago I stopped by my favorite pawn shop and chatted with the owner and asked if he'd had anything interesting come in. He knows I'm a S&W fan and he use to call me when he had nice ones arrive; now he keeps them for himself. I noted that he hadn't called me for awhile and he said he hadn't had much interesting, did have a little 9mm revolver but didn't think I'd be interested in anything that new and he had sold it. I told him I wished he had called. A few weeks later I was in again and he offered me a S&W box, said whoever had bought the gun didn't want it. Yup, it was for the 940, I took it home with me as he was just going to toss it.

A month or two later I'm there again and a guy comes in and says "I bought a gun here awhile back, I really don't need it, can I sell it back to you." It was the 940-1, I bought it (with the shop owner's approval) but haven't ever gotten around to shoot it. Probably should sell it to someone who's been looking for one.

OK, I'm going to sound off my rocker for a moment, but please believe I'm only partly as crazy as I sound... :

I've always been intrigued by auto-cartridge revolvers, like 9mm and 45 ACP, but the one thing that prevents me from being serious about them, is that I wouldn't want my gun to be 100% useless after the balloon goes up, if I lose or can't find any moon clips. I believe that with the M1917 (at least S&W's version), you could still fire the 45ACP without moon clips. Is that the same for their 9mm revolvers as well? Like if you bought a 986, would you at least be able to fire the rounds without moon clips, even if emptying the shells became more problematic? I really prefer the 9mm cartridge over most revolver rounds.

FWIW, S&W intends that moon clips be used with their 9mm revolvers. The 940-1 I've had for years requires moon clips. Without moon clips, headspace is Grossly excessive. Some 986 owners have reported similar. My Ruger LCRx and SP101 9mms headspace properly without the clips. Interesting little revolvers all. Many seem to assume the 9mm cartridge fired in the little 2"-3" barrel revolvers must be pretty wimpy; barrel/cylinder gap, etc. Chronograph indicates otherwise. Enjoy that 940..
