James C (Doc) White FBI Duty Guns
I have a .357 Magnum REG #657 that was once owned by Doc. I did a FOIA request to see if I could turn up any FBI records in relation to his Magnum.
Nothing on my gun, but did find a record of a couple of Colts he carried while a Special Agent.
Colt .45 Auto #C-175630 mfg. 1934.
Colt .38 Detective Special #457104.
The document is labeled FD-107
Labeled as Duplicate Property Record
Besides the guns it lists Badge Number, Commission Card, FBI Handbook, etc.
Date stamped October 18, 1947. This is about the date of his retirement.
Bottom of the document says Removed From Field Personnel File
Don't know how long Doc carried the guns. If on the long shot someone owned one of these guns I could provide a document showing they were issued to James C White.
Since all threads need pictures, here is a pic of the RM.

mancintexas, the gun I have is a S&W .357 Magnum. It shipped to Potchernick's in San Antonio, Texas on December 24, 1935. Doc was an agent in San Antonio at that time. Probably bought the gun shortly after that.
Would be interested in the date and gun info on the receipt you have.
There are several threads about the gun and Doc on the forum.
If you are interested I would be happy to send you a list.
I have quite a few pages of info on Doc. Some from a FOIA request and some from newspaper articles and various websites. Would be happy to send you copies of what I have.
Would also be interested in copies of what you have.
Welcome to the Forum

I've quite a file on Doc as a special interest person in the development of the Brill in 1905; perhaps we've corresponded before? Doc is best known for his Colt SA and is pictured often with it.
Notice in the card captioning the revolver, "due to the request of his father"; in TX a man had to be 21 to be legally emancipated and join on his own, and he was not yet that age.

Yes, Red you sent me some photos and newspaper articles on Doc that furthered my research. Much appreciated.
For instance that when he was a Prohibition Agent he had a partner for a while named Tom Threepersons, the famous Cherokee lawman.

And I was happy to share what I had. Your revolver being Dec 1935, it wasn't then the revolver with which Doc pistol-whipped Machine Gun Kelly of all people; on the way into court October 1933. The .357 would have been Doc 'jumping on the bandwagon' with the rest of the FBI after the caliber was introduced for penetrating the crude body armor of the day, and the very thick auto bodies of that time, too. Being a former Texas Ranger he favored his engraved Colt SA that would have been ineffective against armor of any kind.

Posted a similar thread on the Colt Forum. One of the guys there noticed something interesting on the FBI FD-107 form. On the left margin is a notation that says:
transferred
to
A Joe B
bernathy
6-30-47
Think the A is the first letter of the last name. So transferred to Joe B Abernathy. There was an agent named Joe B Abernathy from 1942 to 1976. So looks like Doc's Colts were transferred to Agent Abernathy.
Abernathy was heavily involved in the Kennedy Assassination case. He firmly believed Oswald acted alone. His father William was a Texas Ranger.
