Winchester 1894-1994
Another swap meet find. This one is a Winchester 1894-2004
commemorative. Another impulse buy - couldn’t resist the 26” 1/2 octagonal barrel and nice wood. Other than the sling swivels, it’s unremarkable. Did they make a 94 with pistol grip? Looks more like 64. Sure is sexy!

Yes Winchester built 1894's with pistol grips though they had to be special order guns which Winchester promoted.

That looks like the musket model which they only made until 1927.
Is the barrel 26" long? Notice the forend has an end cap instead of barrel bands that were used on later models.
Usually the magazine tube ran to the end of the barrel so that is different on yours.
Nice find. All lever actions prices have gotten unusually high so I hope that the price was right.

The wood is beautiful. It reminds me of Winchester's extra fancy stuff from over a hundred years ago. I think you stole it..

Winchester defined lever actions this way: With an end cap was a rifle. With a barrel band was a carbine. So, you could have short rifles and long carbines. That definition started with the 1873 model.

Winchester made a lot of Model 1894s with pistol grips. Back in the day you could order them about any way you wanted them including engraved. One hundred plus years ago that would be called an engraved 1894 Deluxe Rifle with a half octagon half round barrel and half magazine.
The 100 year anniversary rifles are kind of one of my favorite configurations of modern Model 94s. I love the half octagon half round barrels with half mag. The engraving on them was an original early 1994 Winchester pattern. The only thing I wish the Lawyers would have allowed them to be made with out the cross bolt safety.
They did those rifles in three grades with limited of numbers of each grade. The Grade I like the OPs was the most common. The Grade III was the rarest. There were 94 three gun sets with matching serial numbers manufactured.

Yes they did make them.
Sporting rifles I think they were called.
Mine in 38-55 was made in 1909 IIRC
Is very similar to yours.
Octagon to round
Pistol grip and tang sight
Also has a beech front sight.

Checking a Winchester book I see one similar to the OP's
Fully engraved half magazine but it is listed as a take down model. Has the same fully figured walnut stock checkering and pistol grip.
In production until 1936.
I never thought that a long barrel 1894 would be on my list until I shot one.
That extra weight and sight picture makes for some very accurate and enjoyable shooting.
Good price on your 1894. Everything seems to start at a grand now.

Great information. I'm learning how these are graded by features.
So a non-engraved, checkered, pistol grip version like the OP's would be a Fancy Sporting Rifle. At least according to R.L. Wilson.
I may need another safe in the near future.

What’s the difference between 94s with pistol grip and 2/3 magazine tubes and the 64?
