Remington Model 600, who owns one? The good, bad and the ugly! **UPDATE**
**UPDATE - Scroll down to post #42***
I have a 1965 production Remington Model 600 chambered in .243 on the way.
This one has had the rib and trigger guard replaced with metal parts
I already own a Remington Model Seven in .257 Roberts "Ackley Improved" with a Shilen barrel and have always wanted a .243 around so when this oppourtunity came along I grabbed it.
Should have it in my hands mid next week....the wood stock needs to be refinished but the metal is in great shape.
I am told they are great shooters, but there was a lot of negative press about them mainly due to their looks.
Would like to hear from those who own or have owned one of these little carbine's???

My first deer gun was a 600 Mohawk in .243
A rifle I’d like to get is the 600 in 350 rem mag
Congratulations you have an excellent rifle !

I had a model 600 Remington back in the early to mid 70's the caliber was 6mm Remington as with all my guns when I was a pup it was sold for something new and improved. Also about that same time I had a Remington Model 660 in 243 Winchester also sold or traded I certainly don't don't remember,,,

Congratulations! I never owned one, but I always thought it was a very good looking rifle. The only problem I remember was with the nylon ventilated rib, which was made of the same material as the Remington Nylon 66 for weight reduction, but once you changed it and the nylon trigger guard to metal ones (like the one you have on its way), that would take care of the problem.

The 600 was a great hunting gun, not so good as a pure range gun.
The very short barrel which made it a great hunting rifle made it pretty loud on the range.
It was also pretty light which made the recoil excessive for some.
Then there was the unusual design and backwards bolt handle. It was just ugly!
I’ve been hunting with my Remington 660 in 350 Remington Magnum since 1990. I’ve had no complaints.

Thanks for the review.....Like I said, there are those that love the 600 and those that did not.
The gun magazine's often gave poor reviews of the 600, again not because the rifle's were not good shooters, but because they just had no sex appeal!
I know that the 600's chabered in .350 were very loud and had stiff recoil compared to those in .243 and lighter calibers.

Funny, passed on a nice 600 with the laminated stock in 350 Rem last weekend at the Vegas Show. Still second guessing myself.
A childhood buddy hunted deer with a 660 in 6mm Rem; he took a lot of blacktail with it.

Thank you -

OK, just kidding - have had this for a while. I got it cheap because someone had fiddled with the trigger. Had to sign a "promise not to shoot, sell or give away" etc before the LGS would hand it over. A few drops of oil and cleaning and it's good as new.
The mount is the old Weaver swing low type and the scope is a 1970s Bushnell Nite Lite 1.5 to 4X.
FWIW, the 350 Rem Mag may not be all that great in a rifle, but out of a T/C Encore with 110 JHP @ 3,100 fps it's terrific.

I've never owned one. I don't know that I've ever even seen one, but when I was a freckled faced youngster, reading every gun/hunting magazine I could get my hands on, I spent more time looking at the Remington Model 600 ads than I did at any schoolbook I assure you. That was the COOLest looking rifle I'd ever seen. That vent rib. The blade front sight. The dog-leg bolt, that laminated stock. It looked like it should shoot "death rays" or something. The perfect rifle to carry when I took the "Tunnel in the Sky" to some unknown planet to hunt "Stobor" or something.

Had two of them back in the 80s - both 308, IIRC. Really liked them - great woods rifles. Stupidly got rid of them when I picked up a then-new Model 7 in 7mm-08. I even more stupidly got rid of that handy little rifle a few years later.

I have a few of them. 1 was a 222 I re-barreled to 223. The model 700 barrels thread into the 600/660 actions and you can adjust the headspace with e spacer between barrel shoulder and action BTW
2 more are in 6mm Remington I picked up for wife and step daughters to use as deer rifles. Another is a 308 one of the guns I have owned the longest,my walk around the hills, deer rifle which I have also shot 2 elk with. I picked one up in 350 Remington Mag just because I may want to go moose hunting some day. BTW brass is hard to find. I have managed to collect up about 100 pieces which may be enough. Also you can down load theses and fire 357 bullets either cast or jacketed in them as you could with the ones in 35 Remington. If I was ever limited to cast your own rifle ammo this with a heavy bullet would be my go to hunting gun A gas checked 250 gr lead bullet at 2400fps would be very effective
Another was originally a 308. But I stuck a model 700 6.5 Creedmore bull barrel on it and mounted it in a Boyd's thumb hole.
I also have 2 XP 100s, which are actually just 600 actions missing the magazine cut out and have the trigger mounted different . One in 221 Fireball and the other I reworked to a 6mm Remington with a 15" barrel
All of them are very accurate, Easy to carry around, available in gopher shooter to Grizzly slayer configuration.

My 600 was .308. Got one deer with it but the cheap scope I had on it made me miss a buck. Got rid of it and got a Rem 700 BDL in 7mm mag.

I was a teenager back in the 60's. I had a Remington catalog and I used to stare at the picture the 600 all the time and really wished I had one. At the time at least I thought they were a really neat looking rifle.

[QUOTE=huntsman22;141920577]triple deuce....
Very nice! I may have to get one in .222 eventually!
Where did you get the aftermarket stock?
I see you removed the rib.....did you replace the trigger guard with a metal one?

Mine's in 6mm Remington
Hi, Tom. My 600 is in 6mm Rem. It's short barrel is the best I've used deer hunting in the jungle we live in here in the northwest. Slung, the barrel comes up to my neck.

have one in .308; marvelous, lightweight, dynamic handling. Have had Mohawks in .243, .308, and .222 (which I had punched out to .223). Had a Magnum in .350 which I foolishly let get away from me. As has been mentioned you could shoot pistol bullets out of them for reduced recoil and inexpensive practice, and I had a 2-cavity RCBS mold that threw gas-check 250 grainers, further adding to the versatility. Also have a 660 in 6.5 Mag which is cool, but the cartridge and action length do limit the ballistic performance. The one deer I shot with did not object.
They are wonderful rifles. I think you will find your .243 will not kick bad but the muzzle blast might be impressive. At least that is my distant recollection. If you leave them in the safe loaded the nylon floorplates will warp; not a problem with your steel replacement. I prefer a hinged floorplate for unloading and clearing jams, but that is a minor point. Also, you will want a long, small, skinny screwdriver to depress the bolt release. Another small but annoying fact when dealing with these great rifles. Oh, all of mine were/are sub-minute (but just barely; hey, it was the mid-1960's!) after load development.

I had always liked the looks of the Model 600, but never got one. I did end uyp with a Model 660, however.

Huntsman 22 has a 600 to lust for. My Mohawk 222 is still attached to the birch 2x4. Big Green was ahead of the herd years ago.

I had a model 600 Mohawk in .308. The Mohawk was an economy version sold to the 'big box" stores. It had a stained birch stock. And shot like a house on fire. I added a recoil pad, a Neil Jones one piece aluminum trigger guard/floorplate and a Bushnell 1.5-4X scope. I slew several mule deer with it. My hunting buddy had one of the Model 600's in 6.5 Rem Mag. Now that one was LOUD. He killed a few bucks with his too.
Great rifles. Not particularly classic in appearance but the rather short, stiff and fully floated barrels helped them a lot in the accuracy department.

I have two 660s. One is a 6.5 Rem. Mag, the other is a .308 that I'm in process of refinishing the stock. I've had a couple of others, wish I'd kept the .243. My brother as a Mohawk 600 in .308 I gave him many years ago. It's had a 700 bolt handle put on it. Here's my 6.5 Rem. Mag, now has a 2-7x Leupold VXR scope on it. I prefer the 660s to the 600 due to the 20"barrel and no rib.
Edit to add: This thread inspired me to get back to work and finish my project 660/.308. I ordered and have received a steel floor plate/trigger guard and am motivated to get the stock refinish completed. I'm making a new grip cap and forend tip out of ebony, and have a new 1/2" solid black pad for the buttplate. I think it'll be a sweet little rifle when completed.

My old hunting buddy gave me his 600 in .35 remington. He killed many deer, hogs, and other varmints with it over many years. Bought it new back in the 60's. He was partial to the Hornady 200gr spire point. Rib is a little wavy and floorplate replaced with steel one. Lot of good times with that one

While I was in college, my mom sent me some money and I bought a .243 Mohawk for my younger brother. It was a sweet shooter. I told baby brother if he ever wanted to sell it, I wanted to buy it.
Long story short, I later heard that he made up some too hot handloads, had to beat the bolt open and later sold it to a "friend".
My momma only raised one fool and it wasn't me!

Great rifle WAY ahead of it's time and totally misunderstood...
It was made to be a bolt action CARBINE to replace the leverguns of the time but everyone was on the long barrel MAGNUM kick when the average deer was shot at 100 yards...and as said above, it's a hunting rifle not a range toy. Develop a load, sight in and go hunting...
Have had several in .223 (rechamber from .222), .308, 6.5 RM and .350 RM...all wonderful shooters. Only have the .350 left with original Leupold IER scope in a Detacho QR mount...

EXACTLY!!
They also promoted it as a "Guide" gun at times.....a carbine that was quick to point when needed in a hurry.
I am looking forward to getting mine and once the stock is re-finished get out and shoot it!

Take a look at the stock...the comb actually slants forward...pulls the recoil away from your cheek...

I have my uncle's 660 in 6.5 Magnum. Ammo is scarce and expensive, so I've only shot it a few times. Very loud, lots of muzzle blast, hard on the shoulder and very accurate.
I'd like to get one in .222, but can't really justify having another one.

Gun justification is an easy skill to develop and once you skill becomes well developed it becomes easy to justify another gun safe.
I have managed to justify owning 6 600/660 Mohawks

My 660 in 6.5 Rem. Mag. has the nice quality of shooting varying bullet weights to very nearly the same POI. I've shot groups at 100 yards with 120, 140, and 160 grain bullets that vary less than 3" in vertical dispersion and at the same horizontal plane.

Recall in the 70's many people would buy a Mohawk 600 at Kmart - they were fairly inexpensive. Many would buy it just for the action on which to do a build of their own.

I have heard a few bench rest guns were built using the XP100 actions because their length and lack of a magazine cutout made them a pretty stiff action,
I know both of mine will shoot better than their owner. I have tried betting a couple of friends that I could hit 6 pop cans in a row with a handgun, but everyone I know suspects me of being up to something. Sucks to have smart friends

I've owned several .308's, a .243 and a .350 Mag. The only one I kept was a .35 Remington.
I'd take a bath if I sold it...
I added a steel rib and triggerguard, a 700 style bolt release, a Leupold Detacho-Mount and a Leupold extended eye relief 2X scope.
I was trying to build an early scout rifle, but this gun turned out to be a learning experience. It taught me not to dump a bunch of cash into something I thought I wanted.

Who makes a good steel trigger guard/floorplate for 600/660s now? I havea nice one on my 6.5 but I'm gonna want one on the .308 I'm refinishing, too.

I am all set on rib and bottom metal, but would like to know where you purchased your stock??
I see Boyd's has several options for the 600 Mohawk, which I assume would work on my early 600??

I have the similar model 660, no rib and 20" barrel, in .350 Rem mag. No complaints, except factory ammo is out of production, and oh yeah, it's hard on my old shoulder

The Remington 600 in .243 WIN arrived this week and I stripped the finish, which was peeling, and applied a few coats of Tru Oil and some Ren Wax.
It has the upgraded metal rib and trigger guard.....but no hard sights.
I also installed a 3x - 9x scope and will get it sighted in at some point in the next few weeks.
I am liking the weight/balance of this one!!
I will most likely leave it as is and NOT upgrade the stock.....should make a nice one for coyotes, deer, etc. at moderate ranges.

Pictured below is one I purchased second hand back in about 1976 from a gun store in Manhattan, Kansas. My records show I paid $120.00 to include the scope. It is all original to include the gold colored trigger. I have heard the trigger should be replaced due to safety reasons, but I have never done so. In my opinion, it is a very handy rifle. It is the Mohawk version in .243 version and is very accurate. I have no idea as to when it left the factory but the serial number is 6391893.
