Default HK prices

So a couple months ago, I was shooting with # 1 son, and he dragged out this HK P7 M8, that had only ben fired a couple times. While shooting it he explains about the cost of the M8, M10 and M13 models.

Needless to say, it was very nice to shoot, but what in the world makes a striker fire semi auto worth what these things go for? I see them for 2500 to 8000 dollars. What am I missing?

I think he paid 1400 for his 9-10 years ago

You have now entered the Twilight Zone of collectable HK pistols.

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call, The (HK) Twilight Zone.

I am sure it is all of that for the prices they go for

I own a few HK pistols (P7PSP, USP 9; .40, & .45, and Mark 23) but they are grossly overpriced. Extra magazines are also expensive. As far as the P7’s, it comes down to supply vs. demand.

Whatever you’re missing I am too. I like my HK rollers but I’ve never warmed up to the P7’s.

They have a cult like following. So much so that 10 yrs ago the owner of HK Parts Net was sentenced to 4 yrs in prison for illegally importing/selling over 210 P7’s. The lure of big money was his downfall.

I’m sure that there will be positive input by some here explaining what we’re missing.

First you have to understand that when I bought my P7M8 new in ‘93 it was almost a $1000.00. Just run that in an inflation calculator, that more than doubles the price. Then they quit making them. Then you have to factor in that some people are just crazy.

HKs in general, it’s not just pistols. Multiplied if it’s out of production.

Average price is around $3500 but they arent selling right now in the down economy. Those that you see for 8000 are probably complete and unfired or are limited edition like the 1 in 500 models

I'm unsure why the OP thinks it being a striker fired gun should prevent it from being sought after.

I bought a used HK 91 (308) in the mid 80's for $600 It was ridged stocked and came with: 1 Mag, the sling, carry handle & Bi-pod. I added 9 mags, and a HK brand traditional scope base, and a cheap carry case, in the 90's (During the first assault rifle ban) I got $2500 for the group. I thought that was radicicols money at the time. However the gun shot 100-yard open sight (10 shot) groups with Israeli Ball ammo! and shot 1" (5 shot) 400-yard groups with hand loads.

I sold the gun to financially help out a Missionary and thought I would pick up another one soon; Fat Chance!

In the later 90's I knew a local lawyer that had 3, GSG-9 Police Sniper rifles with factory scopes that cost $5000 each. I also almost bought a German Army Sniper Rifle with their Army Sniper scope (fixed 6x) for $4000. All the "Sniper Rifles" are built on a modified HK 21 action, It is just stamped sheet metal welded together. They do shoot very well, but don't cost much to make and should never have cost those old prices, let alone what astronomical prices they bring today!

The 308 Win. Remington PSP series production Sniper Rifles were better that either HKs, at least mine was. The HS Presession Sniper Rifles are ever better! The FBI says the average police sniper shot is 75 yards (as of 2005) and the PSP are "Shot in the eyeball" at 400 yard accurate! Just how more dead (much deader?) can you make a bad guy with a better rifle? And why buy the foreign rifle?

I own many HKs.

Mostly USPs along with a few long guns

I have owned my P7 PSP for perhaps three+ decades.

The P7s are not ordinary striker fired pistols, they are far more complex than that

They are squeeze cockers. Until you grip the pistol it is uncocked. Further it is gas operated which makes it soft shooting. The original PSP gets quite hot during extended shooting. The P7 M8 reduces the heat issue with the addition of a heat sheild along with a few other changes

The fixed barrel made thesesquite accurate

Mine was in a gear bag onboard an aircraft that had it's wing ripped off in flight. As a result mine fell 8,000 feet. It worked just fine while the Desert Eagle that was in the same bag had it.s frame twisted.

The P7 family is very well built and like many German things it is over-engineered

With the poor exchange rate between the German Mark and US Dollar back in the Day most German were expensive. Havi ng been out of production for about a quarter Century prices on clean examples tend to rise

I have 2 H&K's, the 91 for a full 40 years. I couldn't/wouldn't replace them today. And yes, from personal HK CS experience: "You suck and we hate you!" Joe

Thumbs up

I never could afford an H&K rifle. I did shoot an HK-33 (fully automatic) at Firearms Instructor In-Service Training one year and I absolutely fell in love with it.

Had a HK-91 for several years. Reliable, accurate (great open sights), dirt cheap mags and just plain cool. However it was just too long for short arms, beat brass, center of gravity too far forward and recoiled too much for a rifle that didn't fit. Used the money for FAL and accessories.

Never had the opportunity to shoot a HK pistol, but liked the specs of the P7M8.

Since this is about HK and prices, I thought I'd add my own bewilderment when it comes to their new-gun prices.

USP...their oldest 'modern era' polymer...4-figures
P2000...their next oldest 8's into the 9's
P30..7's to 8's
VP 9 6's to 7's.

Why would those older 'tank' Use-less P's and P2K's still warrant that? I mean, save for one or two of them, there is NO collectibility factor involved. .

Being in the pawnshop biz has favored me on a couple of H&Ks. A forfeited loan on an USP40 for $200. Gifted that to my son, it is his favorite semiauto. Other time, about 2 03 years ago, a customer was in need of cash for a new business venture and sold me several quality handguns one of which was a P7 M8, 2 mags, original case & paperwork. Paid $800 for it. Also sold me a German mfg. Sig P210 and a couple of others. Both now reside in my safe. I shoot the P210 better than any other semiauto I have ever shot. I'm hit & miss with the P7, I have trouble holding the squeeze cocker. Need to work on my hand strength!
Others that have shot it are amazed at the accuracy.
Would I pay today's prices? No way.

H&K has a very loyal fan club and as long as those fans are willing to pay for the guns, the prices will not go down even though they have stabilized lately.
I have never understood why people buy expensive HK SL8s and try to get them to look like the rather unexciting HK G36, when an AR that shoots as well or better can be bought at a fraction of the price.

Aside from the phenomenal engineering and machining, I’ve never warmed up to the P7’s aesthetics - same with all HK products, including the MP5, 91 and 94. However, they do work. Never carried an HK pistol, but was issued MP5s and a 91.

If you liked the HK 33 then you would enjoy my 12" barreled G3k.

This configuration was originally created for the British SAS. I loved it the first time I handled one and knew then that I would own one. BTW, it almost sounds like a 50 BMG with that comp

I have Factory 20 and 30 round magazines along with an aftermarket 50 round snail drum

Mine has a few changes from the original configuration. My forend has been slotted and the compensator has been added. Not visible is the HK 21 buffer that replaced the G3 buffer. this increased the cyclic rate to 720 RPMs when using the fixed stock. The folding stock remains unmodified. With either stock, it is very soft shooting

The coolest thing about these were the German sub caliber kits. The kit turns a HK 91, G3 or G3k into a 22LR Rifle or Select Fire Machine Gun depending on the host

On several occasions I have hosted Forum Members for some shooting. Usually we take my MP5/357 to the local indoor range

I have owned all of these for decades. I bought them long before the prices went stratospheric

Have been on here, GT and hkpro forums since most folks had no tattoos. HK makes so much great kit.

MP5, MP5K, 91 and 93 here for long guns, P2000sk in 40S&W far and away my personal fav for pistol.

There's a good deal currently on an SL8 that is mildly tempting...

I too have been on HKPRO forever. Got several great parts deals there

The P2000sk is an amazing pistol

Mine is chambered for 357 SIG and it is way more accurate than a small pistol has a right to be

One great think about the P2000sk is that you can carry USPc/P2000 full size magazines as your reload.

If you use an X-Grip sleeve, the reloads feels very natural

I wouldn't mind having a 23, but I'd love to have this one a member on the Harley Forum scored.

This is his picture and comment about the pistol.

A buddy owned one of the above SOCOM pistols for a time...
WITH the can designed for the pistol. A chunky, long, combo
if there ever was one, LOL.

After shooting it, we've since referred to it as the

Crew-Served

pistol.

After taking a low drag 500 round per day advanced pistol class with his double action SIG 9, a close friend decided he NEEDED a striker fired pistol. (Neither the first, nor last person I've seen make that decision under those circumstances.)

After lots of research and range time, he narrowed it down to 2. Either the Glock 19 or the HK VP9. He asked me to explain the price difference.

Dude, it's like your lawn mower.

My lawn mower?

How much extra did you pay for the green tractor paint?

Another gun that is now priced out of reach for many people. If you are jonesing for an all steel single stack 9mm and can live without the squeeze cocker, there are alternatives. A S&W 539, 639 or 3906 might not be the easiest gun to find, but it will be well under a thousand dollars. If you want a more compact gun, the Kahr K9 is a great choice.

Put the money you save towards ammo and you'll be shooting for years before having to buy more. A much better option than buying a gun that has become too valuable to shoot much.

HK makes some nice stuff, I have a USP45 set up for a Southpaw and it's an impressive gun. I also appreciate that HK will accommodate us Lefties. I bought the USP used and with extra mags and a nice holster it was priced just a little more than a similar condition Glock. The disparity in new gun prices would probably push me to something else.

Have an HK Expert 45ACP. Paid $900 NIB a few years back and now they are off roster in CA and go for $1200-1500 used. I wouldn't pay that but it is a heck of a pistol.

Why are HK P7's collectable? IMO it's because:
1) No longer manufactured.
2) High build quality and expensive when new.
3) Unique operating system.
4) Relatively low manufacture run of 150K.

Never got bit by the HK bug and I am just fine with that. Issued an MP5, but was never interested in owning anything HK.

I got a very good deal on an HK 45 a few years ago. It appeared to be a law enforcement trade in - there 5 or 6 that day and I picked out the one that hadn’t been fired more than a magazine or 2. It’s big. It’s heavy. It holds “only” 10 rounds. It is very accurate in my hands. It has a thumb safety and a decocker. Do I carry it? Nope but it’s perfect for my bedside.

The thing I really do not understand about HK is that they do seem to dislike civilian consumers.
