Colt has gone for the “charge more but deliver a superior product” market buyers as far as I can tell. Looks as though the strategy is working for them.

In the last couple of years I’ve bought 7 new Colt revolvers and been very happy with each. The fit and finish is excellent and mechanically superb.
Their new offerings appear to be built on existing frames, Anaconda, Python and King Cobra. The Viper is pretty much a King Cobra with a partial under lug rather than the full under lug.
I have both the KC Target and 3” and they are excellent. The action is just as smooth and a little lighter than my new Pythons. I understand the action is the same just scaled down and the Anaconda is a scaled up Python action.

I don't know about the Viper, but I just bought my third new Python in four years and am quite happy with all three. I do not pretend to know if they're "better" than anyone elses revolvers, but I like them a lot.

It looks like Colt is really on to something with all these revolver offerings. You read many good reports, with only a few negative comments, usually having to do with quality control.

I agree, but I wouldn't put any of the new Smith revolvers up against them, not even in the same ballpark imo.
Fit, finish and design are leagues above Smith's new revolvers.
Vintage Smith, now that's a different story.

I’m hoping for a blued 3 inch Viper.
A new production is the only way I could ever own the rarest snake on earth.....
And here I thought that the large and even medium frame revolver business was dead. KOODA FOOLED ME!!!!!!!!!!!
Given its' light frame/thin cylinder I just hope folks keep the "thermonuclear loads" for their 27's, 28's or Rugers.

I think it would handle regular diet of hot magnums just fine but I’m not sure my wrists would. They’re plenty strong but not heavy in weight like the Python or N frames and for a steady diet of the really heavy stuff I’m not sure anyone can top a Ruger Blackhawk.
Given a choice between the KC and a Smith airweight 357 J frame or even a 640 357 I’d take the Colt any day. I only shoot 38’s and don’t think I’ll shoot magnums in either. I reserve magnums to my Pythons and Smith M28.

This gun is a SS equivalent of the "Police Positive" which was .38 spl. I figure they are considering current factory .357 mag loadings and taking their chances. I'm sure we'll find out later this Summer. Joe
I wouldn't be able to get my wallet out fast enough if Colt opts to offer both barrel lengths of the new Viper in high-gloss blue. Bonus points if they round out the trigger guard by then!

I’ve read several articles referencing significant improvements in metallurgy. I’m sure Colt has tested their revolvers to see just how much pressure they’ll take. I certainly wouldn’t shoot Ruger only loads but I’d imagine they’d hold together. But I don’t intend to find out.
I don’t think Colt or any manufacture is releasing guns with the chance they’ll come apart. They’d be liable for injuries and have to replace a lot of guns plus the damage to their reputation would kill them. I have confidence they’ll take a steady diet of anything within SAAMI specs.
Small quibble here. They are similar to the Police Positive Special, not the Police Positive. The PP was smaller than the PPS and was not made after 1943 if memory serves.
I have my eye on the 4" barrel.
