I recently bought a 1978 Colt Python. Problem is it has a set of rubber grips on it. :(
I'd like some good wood for it. Originals are hard to find and expensive. However, current model take offs are plentiful and fairly cheap.
Here's my question: do the current Python 2020 grips fit on a a 1970s Python? If so, is it a good fit? Clean edges? No sloppiness or looseness?
Thanks.

OP:

Can't answer your question but I think you want vintage stocks. Yours would be 3rd generation, but there are early and late versions. Deer Hollow has a good guide to determine the correct ones and to be sure of originals. This set sold here recently for $175 shipped.

Yes, I know. The correct grips would be the early 3rd Generation. Big money if I can find 'em.
Its a shooter, so I can live with close enough. ;)

I don't know the answer to your question
But, I have a few older Pythons a couple I carry and shoot as they were made for, I have a 4" nickel that belonged to a dear old friend that has passed on and it means the world to me that I have it now.
I have the original grips put up, I personally think they suck! They are expensive and they didn't fit good and they crack if you over tighten the screw and I'm glad I don't need any at current prices!
I have others installed on mine, wood that I like and feel much better and are just better stocks. I do like emblems.
This picture isn't great I think it looks better in person but these were cheap, a foreign maker but they feel great and I like the looks.
I personally wouldn't spend big money on the stock ones especially if you're carrying and using it or I'd wait and grab me a bargain on some if they pop up.
I have some wood hogue on other Pythons

Yes, the new grips will fit an older Python and vice versa. I would recommend a set from Deer Hollow Enterprises. They are absolutely first rate and cost about 1/3 less than a set of originals. Frankly, I like them better than the originals. I have five of the new Pythons and have replaced the grips on all of them.

I have bought several pair of 3G Colt grips for around $125 each. But that was pre-Covid. I have one pair of Colt 1G grips that some earlier owner sanded smooth. For shooting, they are my favorite. They look and feel good in my hands, but have no monetary value.

Colt OMM and Trooper grips will also fit a Python, but they have silver medallions. And that would not bother me.

I decided to go with a nice set of Altamonts. Pretty Rosewood, same basic shape as factory, but obviously aftermarket. I think they'll look good on this gun. :D
Got 'em ordered, order confirmed. A couple of hours later I get an e-mail. Currently out of stock, but we will make a set for ya. Be 1-3 weeks.

I don't know the current Thai grip offerings, but some years back I bought several N-frame and K-frame grips. They were satisfactory and great buys. But mine were not replicas of any S&W factory grips. Never bought nor saw any Thai grips for Colt. I believe there are several Thai grip makers. I bought my Thai grips off eBay and I suppose that would be a good place to look for them if you are interested.

I checked, quite a few different Thai Colt grip styles listed on eBay. Not what anyone would call exact replicas but they look nice. And the price is right.

I know someone who switched out the grips on his 70's Python with some new Python grips because he liked the way they felt better. He can always pop back on the original grips.

Python grips

I have a 78-79ish Python from the Custom Gun Shop. It came with rubber(or whatever) grips with the Colt emblem. Has finger grooves. If the OP has those...they are original.

I had a pair of Colt-made aftermarket grips for the original Python that fit a new Python. I took them out to a friend's LGS and he let me try them on one in his case. He liked them and bought them from me. They fit really well.

I had the same issues when I bought my slightly abused 6" Python ("truck gun") from a local gun store years ago. I removed the Pachys and replaced them with these wooden Hogue's, which I really like. Occasionally you can find some original 3rd Generation stocks but they tend to be a little pricey. You might try the "Colt Forum", too. I've had a couple of those guys offer to sell me some stocks, I just haven't taken them up on it because those Hogue's look and feel great. I understand that the new production grips do fit vintage Pythons. Good luck with the Altamonts!
