Default Remington 552 Speedmaster!

Picked this up earlier today for $300. How did I do? Couple scratches here and there but nothing major. Hasn't seen much use over the years. Well taken care of, no rust or pitting. Apparently there is no serial number on her, so im guessing she was made before 68'. Can anyone tell me when it was made please? BM code of left side of gun. Thanks!

Prob January of 1965. Unsure how you did on price but these days, any quality, Amer made .22 of that vintage isn’t a bad deal at $300. Remington’s 500-series 22s are phenomenally accurate.

Yep I agree. The 552 was always a favorite of mine. Seemed like real quality. Believe they were offered with walnut and hardwood.

I had one that was a deluxe model with checkered stock and foregripplus the white spacers. The tube fed magazine fed everything, 22 cb caps, 22 sorts, 22 lr. I gave it to a Vietnam Vet buddy of mine, he passed a couple of years ago but I hope his wife is enjoying it.

I carried a 552 in my car as a Trunk Gun for a long time. I bought it for about $30 back in the early 1980s because the buttstock was broken at the wrist. I glued it back together with epoxy. It didn’t look so good but it was perfect for my use, and mechanically OK. The best Remington .22 semiauto rifle by far is the 550-1. Nothing else comes close. If you ever see one (which will not be often), grab it.

Nice catch, wow. I have heard the same on being accurate. Need a range report when you have time, Larry

Some Remington .22 rifles that do not appear to have serial numbers do have a serial number on the underside of the barrel in front of the forearm. So you might take a look.

The 552BDL was the first gun that I purchased for myself, back in the late 70's. I now own 4 Speedmasters and 2 Fieldmasters, so you might say that I really like these .22s! Accurate, well-made, quality rifles sized for adults. I rank it right up there with the Marlin 39! Congrats on your buy!

I have one just like it. No serial number - I got it new in 1966. It got a real workout back then, mostly shooting 22 shorts at 50 cents a box.

In the early 80s I was a struggling dairy farmer. My best friend was a college student. We each had several guns that we couldn't afford to shoot very much, but his Speedmaster and my Fieldmaster went to the range REGULARLY!

I think you did good. Those Remington .22s of that era are quality rifles. Dad taught us to shoot way back in the early 1960's on a 572 Fieldmaster. I found a nice 572 at a local auction 6 years ago. Very accurate. Be careful about getting powder/lead solvent on the receiver finish. When I was cleaning mine after purchase the rifle had a lot of lead buildup in the chamber. I really used a lot of scrubbing and solvent. Didn't realize some solvent had run down down on the outside of the receiver and slightly discolored the bluing around the ejection port. Should have taken it apart to deep clean the lead out.
Enjoy!

I had an excellent 550 that I bought at an estate auction until it was stolen from me. .22 S,L & LR interchangeably. I never wanted a 552 because of the alloy receiver but they are good guns I suppose.

I never had a 552 but always wanted one.
I’ve owned a few 572BLs but stupidly sold them all.
My first 572 was extremely accurate.

In the 90s I bought a Remington 572 slide action .22 in a pawn shop but didn’t like it and sold it. I then got a 552 at the same place for $275. Just the other day I slid an old Mossberg scope with mount onto it. The scope was in my dad’s stuff when he died. I’ll position it correctly at the range. I love the heft of the gun, and being a lefty I like that bolt on the left side. It and my Rossi are all I want or need in .22 rifles. My only other semi auto rifle is also a Remington. A .300 Savage Model. 81.

I have two 81s in .300, one is a grade C. Not a lot of fun to shoot with full loads. I download to about .30-30 level. I form .300 cases from .308 brass, very easy to do. My 550-1 functions OK with .22 Short SV, and doesn’t make much more noise than a pellet rifle.

The Remington Speed Master is a great little rifle. I have one that came from a widow I know, very nice shape with an old Weaver scope on it that still has clear optics even if it's a bit small (3/4" tube). She thought her husband bought it new, date code is 1959 IIRC. Shoots great and cycles everything I've tried in it from Standard Velocity Shorts on up!
