Henry AR7 Survival Rifle
I have wanted an AR7 for a long time. Finally stumbled into a new one at a very good (cheap) price. I put a single point sling mount on it and the sling stores away in a butt storage bag. The whole thing fits nicely in a small backpack. While I like the concept I wasn’t sure what to expect for function and accuracy. I put over 100 rds through it this morning and never had to touch the sights. The target pics are at 25yds with two different types of ammo. First two mags ever put through it. Both Winchester. 36gr hp and 40gr hp. The silhouette is at 50 yds and 75 yds standing freehand. I had 2 FTF both on last shot from the same mag. I’ve already contacted Henry and assume they’ll send me a new mag. Just thought I’d post this because a lot of people PooPoo the rifle as a toy or gimmick. Im here to tell ya it’s a legit survival rifle option. It will ride on my ATV and UTV. I can head shoot a squirrel at 25 yds and hit two legged threats at 75 yds. Plus it’s just cool. Way cooler than my 10/22……….. edit, if someone can rotate my target pics that’d be great.

The Henry AR-7 has made up for the Charter Arms version which was a problematic beast at best.
My Henry is a nice piece...but I admit my original Armalite AR-7 is my favorite of the two...a bit cruder and very picky about magazines...it only functions well with a genuine Armalite magazine...it's still fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate.

I always wanted one of these but never really followed-thru. Once I saw an original Armalite at an estate sale that was family run. The guy was trying to sell it "under the table" as they say. (FFLs are required in NY even for private sales)
As it turned the sister came out from the kitchen and she was a coworker. I offered my condolences for the death of her father, and her brother said we could make a deal. I hesitated just because when it comes to guns I'm always on the up and up.
Now with interest piqued, I may just look around at next week's gun show.

I’ve wanted one since my Dad took me to see “Rage” when I was a kid. George C Scott goes on a revenge rampage with an AR-7 after the government kills his kid and all his sheep with a nerve gas test gone wrong. There is a scene involving the sudden appearance of a house cat and its even more sudden demise that shocked little me back in the day.
I finally found a Henry for cheap a few months ago. It worked great but my oilfield kid wanted it to shoot bunnies on the patch so off it went. I’ll find another.

Look for either a new Henry built AR-7 or an original Armalite gun...avoid the Charter Arms version...quality control was spotty and performance was inconsistent at best.
That being said...the original Armalites are fussy about magazines...mine only works properly with original Armalite mags.

James Bond used an AR-7 in From Russia With Love...though Q misidentified the caliber as saying it was "point 25 calibre". Then again...Q-Branch could probably have re-chambered it....but the Bond movies were never all that accurate about weaponry.

I’m pretty sure the Bond girl used it, not James

The Bond girl was running around with it but I don’t recall if she actually fired it. James brought down a helicopter with it. He shot the bad guy who dropped his grenade inside helicopter causing it to explode. This particular AR7 had a scope on it.

Bond let Kerim Bey use it to kill an assassin then later in the movie to shoot down a helicopter by hitting the bad guy who dropped a live grenade in the chopper.

I had a stainless steel rifle like that in an O/U .22 Hornet/.410 shotgun. I gave it to a friend. I think it came from Springfield Armory.
Yes, I found it online:

This is my original ArmaLite AR7, bought just before ArmaLite sold the rights. It's never missed a beat.

Tilly Masterson used one in Goldfinger to try to assassinate the villainous title character.
In From Rusia with Love Bond himself used the AR7 to shoot the bad guy coming out of the window during the police raid scene. Karim Bey was going to use it to shoot the bad guy, but had a bum arm from the earlier fight scene in the gypsy camp, so Bond used his shoulder as a "rest" to pick off the bad guy as he climbed down a rope from a 3rd story window.
EDIT: I stand corrected.
I just watched From Russia With Love again. Bond OFFERS to shoot the bad guy and even sets up to use Karim Bey's shoulder as a rest, but Karim Bey insists on doing the deed himself, so they switch positions with Karim Bey shooting the bad guy using JAMES'S shoulder as a rest.
So, I guess the only time Bond actually fired the AR7 himself was when he used it to bring down the helicopter in Goldfinger.

I could easily fit a quick detach opitic in the butt pouch of my AR7. Maybe I’ll mess around with a cheap one and see if it holds POA.

I've been thinking about getting one of the Hemry versions. I have an original Armalite that I love, great little plinker. Nice story goes with it, wife and I were in a local surplus store, they had it in the case. I looked at it but decided we had spent enough money for one day so passed. Decided I wanted it and it was gone when I went back. Found it under the Christmas tree, wife had gone in the next day and bought it for me!
I've owned a couple of the Charters and one from another company that made them briefly after Charter quit. I must have been lucky, all the ones I had worked pretty well. Had one magazine that had issues but that one came with a spare that worked great. Think the Henry might be a nice addition, I like that it has storage for an extra mag in the stock.

Desi , you can store 2 mags in stock and a third in the receiver while it’s in the stock. 24 rds ready to go…… on a side note. I emailed Henry yesterday about one of my magazines having a couple hiccups while the other worked fine with both types of ammo I tried. Henry responded today and they are sending me a new magazine. WOW thats customer service.

The only real weak point that I'm aware of is the rubber butt cover tearing.

Well, this is all your fault. My wife is holding you responsible. I decided I wouldn't buy one unless it was the camo version. Went to Hamburg today and wouldn't you know it - the guy I bought an AR from last year had both the black and camo versions on his table. He was willing to include the tax and NICS in the price but I still wasn't going to deal.
The wife said you weren't really going to buy it were you? Then, the clock hit Noon and the girlie started singing the National Anthem. I took off my hat and put my hand over my heart (as did EVERY person in the auditorium). After the song was over and everyone cheered I told her yes I am.
PS - it was still less than her monthly horse board payment. That's my story and I'm sticking to it....

My Dad got an original around 1960 or so, probably not long after these guns were first marketed. As I recall, it was reasonably accurate considering the very basic peep sight. Forty or fifty years later, the plastic stock suffered a huge crack after being stored in a closet for a long time. I don't know anything about the newer guns.

Jim, I’ve been accused of being an enabler before. They really are good cheap fun. Take it to camp and take it on boat. I bet Skipper and Gilligan wished they had an AR7. Who knows, you could get stranded on Strawberry Island lol.

My Dad courted My Mom on Strawberry Island, as did I with my wife-to-be. My kids swam there when they were little. When they closed off the cove I was running a tiller tinny with oars. I said "they ain't keeping me out of there during fishing season", so I raised the motor and paddled in.....once, it was too much work. Now I have a Whaler and it doesn't have oars.
Nifty little toy. It will go with my revolving rifle. Can't have too many .22's.

I was looking into one a few years ago. Didn't pull the trigger though. If memory serves they were developed as a survival rifle by the Air Force — or something like that?

Not a fan.
Sometimes they don’t return to zero after taking apart and putting back together.
I’ll take a 10/22 with a folding stock over the Armalite/Henry any day.

My neighbor passed away a few years back. Most of his guns went to his son. A few left. One was an AR7 Survival Rifle. His wife for the life of her did not know where the barrel went. After some time it was figured out! OOPS! Bob

Tried out my new toy at camp last weekend. Tried 3 different ammo brands, one was even std velocity, and it took them all without a single hickup.
Even watched "From Russia With Love", to see James Bond use one. When the Chief gave it to him he actually called it an AR7. The first use was with a silencer and a scope. The second time he was on the run and shot down a helicopter with it. (hit the invader in the arm and he dropped his grenade inside the helo.
Can't wait till Summer. I'll keep it handy at camp and shoot down any drones that may come by.....

The AR-5 is the USAF rifle - a bolt action .22 Hornet. The semi-auto .22 evolved from it.
In the early 60's, I had one of the model kits discussed in this American Rifleman online article. A young cousin broke it, sadly, given the current pricing the article claims. My Charter Arms has held up better. A gift from my then girlfriend, she's held up well too.
Relic Of A Different Time: The Lindberg AR-5A Replica | An Official Journal Of The NRA
"The Lindberg AR-5A replica appeared around the same time the U.S. Air Force adopted the rifle in 1956. ... the replica was part of an ArmaLite/Fairchild promotional push of the AR-5 that included articles about the rifle in magazines like Popular Science.
Production numbers of the Lindberg AR-5A replica are unknown, but they certainly exceeded the two dozen or so AR-5s produced by ArmaLite."

I will take a Ruger 10/22 Takedown with folding stock and threaded barrel any day over any of the AR7 style rifles.

The charter arms versions were highly problematic. Ask me how I know. Hope you have better luck with the Henry version. I’ve heard good things.

And I’ll take a S&W J frame over a Rossi any day. That’s not the point. This was a simple review of a fun inexpensive gun that many people have dismissed as a gimmick without actually shooting one. I’m not comparing it to anything. Just giving my opinion on THIS rifle.

Everyone MUST have a 10/22. It's simply that iconic. I bought one years ago.
Of course the price is more than double the AR7. Also, it may be a "takedown", but the pieces are too long to fit in a little package like the AR7.
Regardless, the folding stock version is not legal in NY.

Interesting enough, my buddy let me shoot his Charter Arms AR7 last Thursday. I just shot it at 15 yards, standing and unsupported, but it was easy to shoot quarter size or less groups. I was pretty surprised.

I agree the AR7 has the cool factor. I went to a gun show a couple of years ago with a pocket full of money with a hankering for a new AR7. Turns out a couple of different dealers had new in the box AR7's in both black and camo.
As well as AR7's, one of the dealers had Ruger 1022's as well and a 1022 Takedown LITE caught my eye. Yeah, the Ruger was more expensive than the AR7 but the Ruger ended up coming home with me instead, it has it's own cool factor.

I won one at a Friends of the NRA banquet fundraiser. I had always wanted one, but never got around to owning one. My wife was teasing me because I was so excited over such an inexpensive rifle that I clearly should have purchased one earlier. It is a hoot and has never missed a beat.

Did you have to get the NY gulag semi auto stamp on your pistol permit to purchase it ?

I’m kind of partial to this one myself. It’s an excellent little takedown .22 if you can find one.

I got the stamp when they first became law. But for the AR7 he wanted my driver's license and never asked for the PP.

As I recall, those AR-7s
Will actually float also. Somebody can correct me if I am wrong but good to know if you are going on a float trip.

Charlie they kinda float but only for a little while. Long enough to retrieve it should you drop it or tip a canoe or something.

Jim, by entering your DL# they know if you have a pistol permit and semi auto permit. They are all tied together in the database. I’ve you get pulled over by a traffic cop, don’t be surprised if he asks are you carrying a handgun.
