Default CZ-75?

My BIL has a CZ-75BD he’s wanting to sale. I know next to nothing about these guns but his price is fair and it feels good in the hand.

Does anyone here know anything about these Czech handguns?

The CZ-75s have quite the following, and are considered excellent guns. Many in use the world over in military and law enforcement capacities. Stateside they're a little less known, but plenty of serious shooters and EDCers swear by them.

They're DA/SA, which is a system some folks love and many don't. The model in question is a double-stack, all-steel pistol, and as a "BD" designation is decocker only.

What else do you want to know?

They're one of the very best pistols ever made, IMHO.

I bought a milsurp 75BD from buds a few years ago. I liked it, but for me the POI was different than my M&Ps. I sold it off to put funds toward other toys.

The CZ-75 comes a few flavors. Do you know which one he has? Doesn’t really matter, they are all great weapons. The various clones are good guns, too.

Edit: Oops, now I see it’s a BD. Yes, I would say grab it.

I have several CZ75's and agree with the majority opinion expressed above that they are excellent pistols. I am also reminded of the BHP in the way they feel in the hand (and I've been a long time fan of the BHP).

I bought a new one back in the early 90’s that was a pre B mode. If I remember correctly it was marked made in Czechoslovakia not Czech Republic. I sold it a couple of years ago because I no longer used it but during the years I owned it I shot many IPSC matches with it and put many home load thousand rounds through it and can’t recall it ever choking.

At the time I bought it they were hard to get and you had no choice other than the standard fixed sights and SA/DA action. I shot the stock configuration for several years with excellent results but wound up having it converted to SA only and the slide milled for a target front sight and vs a Bomar rear.

If the new ones are anything like the originals, they’re tanks, very accurate and about as durable as you can get. If I were looking for a 9mm today I’d look at a CZ first.

Above posters have it all correct. Plus, there is a novel, factory - made .22LR kit for them called the Kadet. Fantastic extra with any CZ.

OP don**™t hesitate. Great guns ! I had 2 - a stainless 75B and an 75B SP01. I sold the stainless back to the buddy who I had bought it from. Both had the full action spa package from CZ Custom. Neither of mine are the D decocker version. The SP01 is a brick definitely more of a duty or competition gun. The 75B is a much better choice for concealed carry. The best grips (in my opinion) are the original rubber grips or the Lok Palm Swell Bogie mine are in the grenade texture.

I’ve probably fired more rounds through my SP-01 than I have through any other firearm. It is more accurate than I am, and it has been supremely reliable.

In many thousands of rounds it has failed exactly once, when I was shooting around the left side of a barricade. Turns out it won’t reliably eject cases when you hold the ejection port firmly against a wall.

In short, I’m a fan.

Edited to add: Others have mentioned Cajun Gunworks, so I thought I should add my own praise for their work. My own gun was “Cajunized,” and I can’t say enough good things about the results.

I have a 75BD Police. It has been worked over by Cajun Gun Works, and is a terrific pistol in all aspects. It has become my favorite 9mm.

There was gentleman named Cooper that was rather taken with them, his only regret was that they were invented in a communist country and that it was 9mm. He called it the "Brunner pistol".

While I don't currently own one, I've shot them, had them as range guns and worked with folks who were issued them. I also shared beer with a CZ rep in Germany (short story).

They are dependable and accurate. I happen to like The frame mounted safety or decocker (based on variant). They were also making affordable competition semi-autos, but I believe Canik might have displaced them from the most affordable position.

CZ has been making some significant acquisitions as of late, Dan Wesson, Colt, S&B, etc. They are a quiet powerhouse. Their parent company is also a european defense contractor.

Has one years ago as well as a Beretta 92FS. The CZ kept with the Beretta in every way.

I should have kept it.

I don't care for auto jammers, I'm a revoler guy. That being said, I purchased a 75BD surplus gun a few years ago and is the best 9mm I have ever shot. An improvement over the Fn High Power, it my go to 9mm. Jam free and accurate, sweet to shoot.

A couple of years ago, I sent my CZ75B to Cajun Gun Works. Have you heard the hype about Cajun Gun Works? It’s all true.

CGW did a trigger job, sights, and a bushing. And I don’t think it needed a bushing, but the bushing was relatively inexpensive and since they had it anyway….

My lightly modded gun will put 5 shots in an inch and a half group, from a rest at 25 yards. It has never malfed. Recoil is light and pretty straight back.

Take advantage of your brother in law. Buy his CZ. Never sell it back.

I had all but given up finding a 9 mm other than a High Power that I like enough to keep until trying a CZ 75. To me the decocker is a great feature for a carry gun. First shot DA trigger pull is long similar to a revolver with the following shots being SA for a quick light trigger pull. Mine eat every type of ammo I can find without fail.

Here are pictures of my Pre-B CZ 75, the groovy-colored Communist box, and papers that came in it. Also pictured is the Ross (South African) holster I bought for it in Vienna, Austria many years ago.

This pistol has been 100% reliable with all ammo, including hollow-point and cast lead.

This was the first CZ 75 pistol that I had ever seen, other than in pictures. Some time in the mid-80s, somehow a batch of them were let into the country. I immediately had my FFL order one, and I was so happy when it arrived. When I first opened the box, it was like I was looking at something from another planet.

One of the best pistol designs on the market. Most are all steel so they are on the heavy side but that's a plus when shooting. Excellent guns love mine which includes the Tanfoglio clone.

I have one. I’m trying to like it but I just can’t warm up to it. I prefer just about everything else in the collection. The single action is terrible and I’m not spending $300 to improve it. The small slide grooves just don’t work for me. The double action trigger reach is too long. It’s a quality piece, it works as advertised. But I don’t get the lovefest.

They are popular enough that they have been cloned by a number of companies. I have never had 1 (CZ) myself, but had 3 or 4 clones. My Jericho 941 that was an un issued surplus gun. Solid as a rock. Bob

Had a pre B CZ75 and currently own a CZ75b.
Very nice, very high quality gun. Very nice trigger. Unfortunately one of my least favorite handguns to shoot due to the very long distance to the trigger.
Definitely made for people with big hands or long fingers.
I recently made a post on another forum comparing the distance from backstrap to trigger face of some of my guns and width across the grips,
The CZ had both the second longest reach(HK USP45 was longer but thinner grip)
and second fattest grips with factory panels(Beretta 92, thicker grips but shorter trigger reach),
So the combo is not favorable to small hands.

I had a 75 SA, single action like BHP or 1911 and sold it a few years ago. I now have an SP-01 Omega. This one is a SA/DA with a decocker. It's the size of a Glock 19 with a light rail. Cajun did their deluxe package on it. It's a great little gun as all of the CZ's are but not sold on DA/SA. wonderful shooter and ergos are great.

Thumbs up

I've had my CZ75 (Made in Chzechoslovakia) for about 25 years. These are among the finest semi-automatic pistols ever produced, IMHO.

Absolutely reliable and eats every kind of ammo out there (and many of my 9mm reloads) effortlessly. Built like a tank so it is very soft shooting, extremely accurate as well.

You just can't go wrong with a CZ product, handgun or long gun.

Cheers!

P.S. The CZ75's 50th Anniversary is coming up in '25!

Both are SA.
This one has been to CGW.

This one has an alloy frame. A little nicer for EDC.

Both are excellent shooters

As others have already said, “Buy the CZ!”

The CZ 75 family of pistols is exceedingly good… I have just 4 now, but have had others.
(Therefore, I no longer keep a Hi Power in the stable… these scratch the itch for me!)

I've had this one since 1985 or so, if'n I could only have one:

Been carrying this one (CZP07) since 2021 (next to what it replaced), big but trustworthy:

For $200 I couldn't resist a Philippine copy, been 100% from the 1st round:

You won't find much downside with a CZ 75. Joe

I say the same thing about every plastic, striker fired gun on the planet. LOL.

I bought one new about 30 years ago. I would make sure that he cannot buy it back whenever he wants to so that you do not feel obligated to do so. Mine shoots cast, traditionally lubed or pc's or jacketed very well.

CZs are fantastic! Another vote to buy it. You really can't go wrong.

I've really warmed up to CZs in the last couple of years. I can't believe I didn't discover them sooner. I have lok palm swell grips on a couple of them, perfect for larger hands. I don't think I ever make it to the range anymore without some variant of a CZ75. Also have a 97B. Back in fall I was at a gun show and found this glossy stainless 75B just before the show opened. Stainless ones don't show up very often around here. Glad to have it. I recommend you pick it up!

I found one of the "Czech Made" marked guns a couple of years ago and had to have it. I assume you know the story, and the reason for the lack of any CZ logo.

I ♥ my TSO.

BUT I do have a complaint. The factory adjustable sight is ELEVATION ONLY. On a nearly $2k gun. After fumbling with trying to drift it - banging it with a blunt punch - I put a fully adjustable sight from CGW on it.

The TSO and my Model 41 are by far my most used pistols. One other thing about the TSO. Not a complaint. The trigger is lighter than even believable. Great for sport shooting, but too light for bullseye type shooting. You don't get to feel it; it just goes off.

$2K?

I paid $999 + shipping + transfer from PSA for my Shadow II SA. That pistol will put 5 shots under 1.5 inches at 25 yards with me shooting it from a rest. I often wonder if a M52 would do any better.

If you have your mind made up that you are not going spend $475 with Cajun to have them perform their magic on a CZ75B. there’s probably nothing I can type, to convince you otherwise. They can put a reduced reach trigger in. The SA trigger will be as nice or nicer than a really good well broken in S&W Model 41. DA will be light and smooth.

I’d rather have one really, really good pistol than 2 acceptable pistols.

A CZ75B, like a new Python really come to life after the trigger gets some attention.

I've had a CZ 75 for two years now. Accurate and reliable, but with a spongy trigger that took me getting used to.

A great gun, but not as great as my first true love, the Browning High Power.

The CZ 75 was the third wondernine, introduced in 1975, after the VP-70 (1970), the S&W 59 (1971). The Bereta Model 92 came long a year later in 1976. The CZ 75 and Beretta 92 were however by far the most successful of the early Wondernines and aged far better than the other two. Both are still relevant and popular today in a number of different variants.

The major advantages of the CZ 75 pistols are the steel or alloy frame options, as well as the safety lever or decocker lever options. The CZ 75 also fits the hands of people who like the feel of a 1911 or Hi Power. It doesn’t suffer from the fat grip and overly long trigger reach of the double stack versions of the Beretta 92.

——

I have an early pre-B CZ 75, as well as an AT-84 clone made by Solothurn. These pre-B and B models are DA/SA with a safety lever that allows them to be carried cocked and locked. The AT-84 was imported by Action Arms for a short time and they’ve become extremely pricey on the used market.

I have a CZ 75D Compact PCR. Like the other D and BD models it is SA/DA but with a decocking lever. It’s the alloy frame, decocker equipped version of the CZ 75 Compact. If I am going to carry a 9mm handgun, this is likely to be this one. It’s the sweet spot between size and controllability, weight, and magazine capacity.

I also have:

- a CZ 75 SP-01 Tactical (top left) which has a 17 round magazine and rail. It is also a decocker equipped pistol but they also make it in a safety lever model;

- a CZ 75 Compact (middle left). It’s a steel frame, safety lever equipped pistol. The steel frame makes it the softest shooting of the compact CZ 75 compact models, while not making it overly heavy for concealed carry;

- a CZ 75 RAMI (bottom left), a sub compact alloy frame derivative of the CZ 75. It’s available with a 10 round flush magazine or a 13 round finger grip extension magazine. It’s about the smallest readily controllable double stack compact available (although I 5ink it’s been discontinued); and

- a CZ 75 Kadet (top right). It’s a superb .22 LR version of the CZ 75, that is very accurate and very reliable, particularly by .22 LR sub caliber pistol standards. It’s also been discontinued, but they still sell a Kadet conversion kit that will fit on a CZ 75 frame.

All of them are excellent handguns.

Yes, the Rami is discontinued. That is a shame. And the Kadet conversion, the used one go for the price of a new PCR, or more. I put off buyIng both for too long.

I got interested in them after reading Col. Jeff Coopers comments. I bought one as soon as Action Arms in Philadelphia started importing them. It is my favorite semi-auto, and possibly my favorite handgun overall. I have CZ's .22LR Kadet conversion kit for it and get a lot of enjoyment from those products. I would recommend one without hesitation.

I've got four of them:
#1) Straight 75 SA/DA worked over with adjustable sights by CZ Custom
#2) CZ75 Omega SA/DA with Halosun and sights by Cagun
#3&4) CZ75 Compacts with decocker and both have Halosun and sights by Cagun for my carry guns.

Possibly the best handguns for the money pout there. Unlike Glocks or 1911's they don't need much of anything to make them outstanding.

I looked at the 2075 almost 20 years ago. The size and capacity were PERFECT. Couldn't stand the DA/SA trigger. I talked to a gunsmith about converting it to SA only. He said he could do it, but it would still have a long trigger pull. So I skipped it and bought a Para Hawg 9 for concealed carry. Similar size, great 1911 trigger.

Para was awful gun. Disqualified from carry by TWO catastrophic failures. I shoot it occasionally; it is fun to shoot. But can't be trusted off the square range. A shame CZ never made the RAMI with a std SA trigger. I would have bought one.
